DESCRIPTION:Habib Hajallie was named as the winner of the Robert Walters Group UK New Artist of the Year Award at an awards ceremony held at the prestigious Saatchi Gallery on Thursday 10 November 2022\, and he is also a recipient of the Samuel Ross Black British Artist Grant 2022. \nDuring this online talk\, Habib will talk about his creative practice\, his work with UK New Artist and winning the Robert Walters Group UK New Artist of the Year Award. Habib will also be sharing his top tips for new\, emerging artists that he has learnt on his journey. \nHabib seeks to empower often marginalised minorities through the exploration of identity within his ballpoint pen portraiture. Confronting socio-political issues within his drawings acts as a catalyst for a discourse regarding the perception of various demographics as being of lesser humanistic value. Specifically\, with the disenfranchised often being undermined by mainstream media; somewhat paradoxically reflecting an archaic hierarchy of status\, similar to colonial ideologies. Habib’s practice is informed by his Sierra Leonean and Lebanese heritage\, in the representation of figures that have been left-out of traditional British Portraiture\, he works to investigate how identity can be reconstructed by historical oppression. \nFind out more about Habib’s work here.

SUMMARY:Considering Palestine in Clinical and Institutional Spaces: Four Voices
DESCRIPTION:Within the realm of psychoanalysis\, the topic of Palestine\, and Palestinians\, continues to be taboo. Fantastical projections of what makes a Palestinian “Other” and the psychological drives to contain this Other often leave Palestinians in psychoanalytic spaces feeling dissatisfied\, silenced\, and\, in some cases\, aggressed against and violated. Within this context\, we present a twist on the traditional panel discussion format by creating a different space in which we as Palestinian and Arab-identifying clinicians can bring forward the reality of our experiences tackling Palestine in clinical and therapeutic spaces – with patients\, therapists\, supervisors\, and peers. Being mindful of the normative gaze that dictates discussions on Palestine to make them more palatable to a general audience\, we will provide a recording of a conversation between the four of us (Selma\, Nawal\, Tareq\, and Bassem) merging theoretical and experiential knowledge to explore impasses at play in discussions about Palestine. After the recording there will be a short moderated discussion between panelists and moderator followed by a longer period of moderated interaction between panelists and audience where questions and issues can be further clarified and developed.

He is the first Arab-Australian Muslim to win this prestigious award. The Lost Arabs was also shortlisted for the Judith Wright Calanthe Award\, the John Bray Poetry Award\, the NSW Premier’s Multicultural Literary Award\, and the Colin Roderick Award; it has been released in the US and worldwide through Andrews McMeel Universal. He is the recipient of many honors\, including a Guggenheim Fellowship\, an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature\, the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation\, a National Jewish Book Award\, and a MacArthur Fellowship. He divides his time between Jerusalem and New Haven.  \nJoining us\, we believe\, from Edmonton\, where she is a professor of Arabic language and literature at the University of Alberta is Iman Mersal. The Threshold\, translated by Robyn Creswell\, draws from several of her noted earlier books of poetry ranging back nearly thirty years and coming up to the present – A Dark Alley Suitable for Dance Lessons\, Walking as Long as Possible\, Alternative Geography\, and Until I Give Up the Idea of Home. Her most recent book\, the prose work Traces of Enayat (all of these\, we’re giving translated titles)\, received the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for Literature in 2021.\n“The publication of Iman Mersal’s The Threshold is a major literary event. DESCRIPTION:AFMI’s annual Queer Lens program celebrates the multi-dimensional formations of Arab queerness in stories that so urgently need to be told\, especially in today’s polarized media climate that leaves issues of visibility lost in the haze\, or\, worse: cast in a one-size-fits-all “Western Queer Narrative” that ignores the many complexities and nuances faced by LGBTQ+ persons in the Arab World and beyond. \nThis year’s program theme is Diaspora & Displacement and features 5 award-winning short films that highlight the experiences of Queer Arabs around the globe. The characters in these stories all find themselves at the intersection of their identities. Some must reconcile the reality of their sexuality with a family who loves but does not understand\, others work towards a life lived authentically in a society that does not accept them and a few explore leaving a place that is not safe even though it means letting go of those they care about. She and Deema K. Shehabi will share poetry and conversation in this virtual event. \nBooklist wrote about Maya’s new book\, “Al-Hayyat’s latest devastating and courageous collection captures the precarious everyday lives of Palestinians with enormous empathy and glistening clarity.” \n  \nMaya Abu Al-Hayyat is a Palestinian writer\, storyteller\, and mother based in occupied East Jerusalem. Each day she passes through Israeli checkpoints\, like the infamous Qalandia checkpoint\, to direct the Palestine Writing Workshop\, one of MECA’s partner organizations. Maya and her team at the Palestine Writing Workshop have published award-winning Arabic children’s books and led hundreds of interactive workshops from Nablus to Silwan to Gaza for children\, youth\, librarians and parents on reading aloud\, creative writing\, and storytelling. Her work is grounded in the belief that art and literature can change lives and aims to improve Palestinian children’s literacy and also encourage their imaginations. She is a gifted storyteller who captures the attention of children of all ages (and adults too!).Maya also runs writing courses for former prisoners\, helping them transform trauma into art. \nShe has published four collections of poems\, four novels\, and numerous children’s stories\, including The Blue Pool of Questions. She contributed to and wrote a foreword for A Bird Is Not a Stone: An Anthology of Contemporary Palestinian Poetry\, and she is an editor of The Book of Ramallah. SUMMARY:Nubian Architect Menna Agha [afikra Conversations]
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Menna Agha is an architect and researcher who has recently been coordinating the spatial justice agenda at the Flanders Architecture Institute in Belgium. She joins the Azrieli School to promote pedagogy and research in the newly established area of Design and Spatial Justice. Menna holds a PhD in Architecture from the University of Antwerp\, and a Master of Arts in Gender and Design from Köln International School of Design. In 2019/2020\, she was the Spatial Justice Fellow and a visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Oregon. She is a third-generation displaced Fadicha Nubian\, a legacy that infuses her research interests in race\, gender\, space\, and territory. Among her publications are: Nubia still exists: The Utility of the Nostalgic Space; The Non-work of the Unimportant: The shadow economy of Nubian women in displacement villages; and Liminal Publics\, Marginal Resistance.
