SUMMARY:Tatreez Workshops and Lectures by Tatreez and Tea - Ongoing
DESCRIPTION:Your instructor is author and scholar Wafa Ghnaim\, founder of Tatreez & Tea! \nTatreez & Tea’s mission is to preserve Palestinian embroidery and storytelling traditions in the diaspora. Tatreez & Tea is the first of it’s kind. When Wafa first founded Tatreez & Tea in 2016\, she was the only educator solely focused on Palestinian embroidery\, traveling the US and the world. Now\, new local initiatives\, culture bearers\, “tatreez circles”\, and mentors are emerging from communities around the world like never before. The tatreez revolution has gained a beautiful momentum and now is the time to join. \nWafa’s goal in her educational classes are three-fold: educate students from art history and oral history perspectives that preserve the meanings\, stories and symbolism of traditional Palestinian embroidery motifs; teach versatile skills that allow students to eventually produce large independent projects; encourage students to become creative and grow beyond simply abiding by traditional embroidery principles. \nClick here for upcoming events! \nhttps://www.tatreezandtea.com

SUMMARY:Who Can Speak on Palestine?
DESCRIPTION:The Foundation for Middle East Peace & Al Shabaka invite you to the first episode in our four-part series\, Learning and Unlearning Palestine. \nWho Can Speak on Palestine?  \nMonday\, January 30th\, 2023 \n12pm Eastern \nfeaturing Nour Joudah (UC Berkeley)\, Dina Matar (SOAS\, University of London)\, in conversation with Maha Nassar (University of Arizona) \nRSVP Here \nThis conversation will examine the history and current reality of the erasure of the Palestinian narrative\, the delegitimization of Palestinian voices in mainstream spaces\, and possibilities for change. \nSpeakers:  \nNour Joudah completed her PhD in Geography at UCLA. She is currently the UC Presidential Postdoctoral fellow at UC-Berkeley. Nour’s work examines mapping practices and indigenous survival and futures in settler states\, highlighting how indigenous countermapping is a both cartographic and decolonial praxis. \nDina Matar is Professor of Political Communication at SOAS\, University of London\, where she is also chair of the Centre for Palestine Studies. Her teaching and research are informed by a non-Western centric approach to addressing communication and politics\, with a particular focus on the marginal and the periphery. She is the author of What it Means to be Palestinian (2010)\, and co-author of The Hizbullah Phenomenon: Politics and Communication (2014). She is co-editor of Narrating Conflict in the Middle East (2013) and Gaza as Metaphor (2016) and is currently co-editing a volume titled Producing Palestine with Helga Tawil-Souri. \nMaha Nassar is an associate professor in the School of Middle Eastern and North African Studies at the University of Arizona\, where she specializes in the cultural and intellectual history of the modern Arab world. Her award-winning book\, Brothers Apart: Palestinian Citizens of Israel and the Arab World (Stanford University Press\, 2017)\, examines how Palestinian intellectuals connected to global decolonization movements during the mid-twentieth century. She is working on her next book\, a global history of Palestine’s people.

SUMMARY:Madafeh - Book Event - Fida Jiryis - author of the book "Stranger in My Own Land"
DESCRIPTION:After the 1993 Oslo Accords\, a handful of Palestinians were allowed to return to their hometowns in Israel. Fida Jiryis and her family were among them. \nThis beautifully written memoir tells the story of their journey\, which is also the story of Palestine\, from the Nakba to the present—a seventy-five-year tale of conflict\, exodus\, occupation\, return and search for belonging\, seen through the eyes of one writer and her family. Jiryis reveals how her father\, Sabri\, a PLO leader and advisor to Yasser Arafat\, chose exile in 1970 because of his work. Her own childhood in Beirut was shaped by regional tensions\, the Lebanese Civil War and the 1982 Israeli invasion\, which led to her mother’s death. Thirteen years later\, the family made an unexpected return to Fassouta\, their village of origin in the Galilee. But Fida\, twenty-two years old and full of love for her country\, had no idea what she was getting into. \nStranger in My Own Land chronicles a desperate\, at times surreal\, search for a homeland between the Galilee\, the West Bank and the diaspora\, asking difficult questions about what the right of return would mean for the millions of Palestinians waiting to come ‘home’. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFida Jiryis \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Fida Jiryis\nFida Jiryis is a Palestinian author living in Ramallah. She grew up in Lebanon and Cyprus\, the daughter of Palestinian intellectual and leader\, Sabri Jiryis. As her family fled Israel’s oppression and wars\, Fida’s life has spanned the full spectrum of the Palestinian people’s forced fragmentation: in Israel\, the West Bank and the diaspora. Her writings include several collections of Arabic short stories; a contribution to the book\, Kingdom of Olives and Ash\, a Washington Post bestseller; and Ha-Cluv (The Cage)\, a Hebrew translation of her short stories published this year. Her most recent book\, Stranger in My Own Land\, describes her and her family’s remarkable life journey which is\, in many respects\, the story of Palestine.

SUMMARY:Mary Ann Peters "Pulse of Time"
DESCRIPTION:James Harris Gallery is pleased to present our ninth exhibition by Seattle artist Mary Ann Peters titled “Pulse of Time.” This online exhibition focuses on her series this trembling turf and makes connections to previous work throughout her forty-year career. Black and white have been an important element in Peters art making. For the artist\, black and white is often used to tie together aspects of place or the delineation of territory without the potential sentiment of spectrum distractions. In black and white the narrative is consolidated. More recently these colors or anti-colors communicate the experiential storytelling of hidden histories.

SUMMARY:The Lives Along the Nile (5 series class)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to another series in attempting to better understand the Middle East and North Africa yet\, this time we are traveling south to north with the Nile River. We will go on an expedition (no need for passport\, inoculations or tents for camping or visas) from the origins of Nile to the Mediterranean Sea. We will read history books\, journalists’ accounts and novelists describe the river and the inhabitants along its banks. Join us on this journey along the Nile River. According to the National Geographic: “The Nile River flows from south to north through eastern Africa. It begins in the rivers that flow into Lake Victoria (located in modern-day Uganda\, Tanzania\, and Kenya)\, and empties into the Mediterranean Sea more than 6\,600 kilometers (4\,100 miles) to the north\, making it one of the longest rivers in the world. The Nile River was critical to the development of ancient Egypt. In addition to Egypt\, the Nile runs through or along the border of 10 other African countries\, namely\, Burundi\, Tanzania\, Rwanda\, the Democratic Republic of the Congo\, Kenya\, Uganda\, Sudan\, Ethiopia\, and South Sudan. Its three main tributaries are the White Nile\, the Blue Nile\, and the Atbara.” \nFive Mondays: January 23\, February 6 and 20\, March 6 and 27 from 1 to 3 p.m. ET Online \n1. 23rd January 2023: River of the Gods – Genius\, Courage\, and Betrayal in the search for the source of the Nile by Candice Millard (9780385543101) \n2. 6th February: The Black Nile by Dan Morrison (9780143119371) \n3. 20th February: God Dies by the Nile by Nawal al Saadawy (9781783605965) \n4. 6th March: Adrift on the Nile by Naguib Mahfouz (9780385423335) \n5. 27th March: Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie (9780063139848) \nAND/OR \nThe Fugitives by Jamal Mahjoub (9781838850821)

SUMMARY:Streaming: There is Field + panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:Amnesty International Puget Sound AIPS and Local Group AI-270 will be presentingThere Is A Field this Sunday\, January 22\, 2023 from 6-8pm PT. The film will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Nada Elia\, with Alicia Koustoulieris\, Jesse Hagopian\, and Jen Marlowe. \nAbout the film:\nIn October 2000\, a police officer shot and killed unarmed 17-year old Asel Asleh. His story is tragically familiar for Americans\, but Asel was not killed in Ferguson\, New York City\, Atlanta\, or Minneapolis. Asel was a Palestinian teenager who was murdered by Israeli police as he participated in a demonstration\, calling for an end to the Israeli occupation and settler-colonization. \nThere Is A Field begins as a play about Asel’s life and his death\, told from the perspective of his older sister\, Nardin. Through Nardin’s struggle to cope with the murder of her brother\, the play offers a uniquely personal lens for learning about intersecting systems of oppression\, the root causes of state-sanctioned violence and structural racism. Learn more about the film. \nAbout The Panelists:\n\nNada Elia PhD\, (moderator) is a diaspora Palestinian scholar and activist who teaches in the American Cultural Studies program at Western Washington University WWU\, and is the author of Greater Than the Sum of Our Parts: Feminism\, Inter/Nationalism\, and Palestine.\nAlicia Koutsoulieris\, Amnesty International\, USA country specialist for the Israel Occupied Territories – Palestinian Authority – IOPT-PA.\nJesse Hagopian is an educator\, author\, and part of the 2011 African Heritage Eyewitness Palestine delegation. Jesse’s African ancestors survived the middle passage and enslavement on plantations in Mississippi and Louisiana.\nJen Marlowe is the founder of Donkeysaddle Projects and director and producer of the documentary film There Is A Field.\n\nThe free event will take place on Sunday at 3pm ET/6pm PT. Follow this link to register. \n  \nAmnesty International Puget Sound AIPS and Local Group AI-270 will be presentingThere Is A Field this Sunday\, January 22\, 2023 from 6-8pm PT. SUMMARY:UK New Artists in conversation with Habib Hajallie
DESCRIPTION:Habib Hajallie was named as the winner of the Robert Walters Group UK New Artist of the Year Award at an awards ceremony held at the prestigious Saatchi Gallery on Thursday 10 November 2022\, and he is also a recipient of the Samuel Ross Black British Artist Grant 2022. \nDuring this online talk\, Habib will talk about his creative practice\, his work with UK New Artist and winning the Robert Walters Group UK New Artist of the Year Award. Habib will also be sharing his top tips for new\, emerging artists that he has learnt on his journey. \nHabib seeks to empower often marginalised minorities through the exploration of identity within his ballpoint pen portraiture. Confronting socio-political issues within his drawings acts as a catalyst for a discourse regarding the perception of various demographics as being of lesser humanistic value. Specifically\, with the disenfranchised often being undermined by mainstream media; somewhat paradoxically reflecting an archaic hierarchy of status\, similar to colonial ideologies. Habib’s practice is informed by his Sierra Leonean and Lebanese heritage\, in the representation of figures that have been left-out of traditional British Portraiture\, he works to investigate how identity can be reconstructed by historical oppression. \nFind out more about Habib’s work here.

SUMMARY:Create Art Inspired by Egypt\, Ancient and Modern
DESCRIPTION:According to the Arab Republic of Egypt website Tourism page: \nEgypt\, Um-El-Dunya\, literally translated as Mother of the World\, is an Arabic expression which Egyptians and others have used over history in reference to the country’s ancient civilization\, superlatives and achievements making it a unique tourist destination. The “Mother of the World” houses a plethora of unrivaled tourist and historical attractions and thrives with archaeological treasures and wonders rendering it a classic vintage of history and civilization. Tourists travel far and wide to explore the Pyramids and the Sphinx and trace remnants of the ancient Egyptian civilization kaleidoscope of Islamic\, Coptic\, Roman\, Greek and Pharaonic colors. \nEgypt is the cradle of ancient civilization nesting art and temples. The beautiful stretches of picturesque beaches are a magnet for sun-lovers. Every city casts its own spell\, some harbor old temples while others boast of immaculate handicrafts. However\, they never fail to radiate history\, culture and dynamism. \nEgypt is the throbbing heart of the Arab world amalgamated in beauty\, fused with warmth and sanctified by holiness. It is literally a global historical archive\, giving rise to civilizations and bewildering a great many people celebrating it. It is indeed the capital of art\, life\, culture\, science and religion. \nRegistration is open for this unguided event. Registration closes 11:59 PM EST on Friday \,December 16. \nAll Skill levels welcome to this free event! \nClick the register button above to sign up. SUMMARY:Considering Palestine in Clinical and Institutional Spaces: Four Voices
DESCRIPTION:Within the realm of psychoanalysis\, the topic of Palestine\, and Palestinians\, continues to be taboo. Fantastical projections of what makes a Palestinian “Other” and the psychological drives to contain this Other often leave Palestinians in psychoanalytic spaces feeling dissatisfied\, silenced\, and\, in some cases\, aggressed against and violated. Within this context\, we present a twist on the traditional panel discussion format by creating a different space in which we as Palestinian and Arab-identifying clinicians can bring forward the reality of our experiences tackling Palestine in clinical and therapeutic spaces – with patients\, therapists\, supervisors\, and peers. Being mindful of the normative gaze that dictates discussions on Palestine to make them more palatable to a general audience\, we will provide a recording of a conversation between the four of us (Selma\, Nawal\, Tareq\, and Bassem) merging theoretical and experiential knowledge to explore impasses at play in discussions about Palestine. After the recording there will be a short moderated discussion between panelists and moderator followed by a longer period of moderated interaction between panelists and audience where questions and issues can be further clarified and developed.

SUMMARY:Authors: Peter Cole and Iman Mersal (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:If only this evening could be staged in the same room\, as we range around a good part of the world in hosting three poets – Peter Cole and Iman Mersal virtually at 5 p.m. – and another\, Naveen Kishore in store at 7 p.m. Between them\, the U.S.\, Israel/Palestine\, Egypt\, Canada\, and India\, with their poetic and literary concerns extending beyond whatever borders those nationalities might pose. This 5 p.m virtual program returns poet/translator/editor Peter Cole to Elliott Bay to read from his newest collection\, Draw Me After (Farrar\, Straus & Giroux)\, and it helps introduce an overdue major collection of one of the world’s major poets\, Iman Mersal with her new book\, The Threshold (translated from the Arabic by Robyn Creswell / Farrar\, Straus & Giroux).  \nPeter Cole’s Draw Me After very much has ‘drawing’ in it\, with work by Terry Winters\, which he dares from\, so to speak.\n“‘Waking the letters from their slumber’: that’s Peter Cole’s mad\, sublime task in these phantasmagoric poems. Every line of this book breaks the literal—the letters—into visionary scenes where sorrow marries joy and blessings almost rhyme with curse. A revelation.” —Rosanna Warren.\n“Peter Cole shows himself in Draw Me After to be our great master of ekphrasis. Visually\, sonically\, rhythmically\, semantically\, his are some of the most inventive\, witty\, profound\, and genuinely beautiful lyric poems of our moment.” —Marjorie Perloff.\nPeter Cole has written several previous books of poems\, including Hymns & Qualms and Rift\, and he has also translated widely from Hebrew and Arabic works—both medieval and modern. With Adina Hoffman\, he has co-written Sacred Trash: The Lost and Found World of the Cairo Geniza and also published books as Ibis Editions. He is the recipient of many honors\, including a Guggenheim Fellowship\, an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature\, the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation\, a National Jewish Book Award\, and a MacArthur Fellowship. He divides his time between Jerusalem and New Haven.  \nJoining us\, we believe\, from Edmonton\, where she is a professor of Arabic language and literature at the University of Alberta is Iman Mersal. The Threshold\, translated by Robyn Creswell\, draws from several of her noted earlier books of poetry ranging back nearly thirty years and coming up to the present – A Dark Alley Suitable for Dance Lessons\, Walking as Long as Possible\, Alternative Geography\, and Until I Give Up the Idea of Home. Her most recent book\, the prose work Traces of Enayat (all of these\, we’re giving translated titles)\, received the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for Literature in 2021.\n“The publication of Iman Mersal’s The Threshold is a major literary event. Long recognized throughout the Arab world and in Europe\, Mersal is one of the strongest confessional (or postconfessional) poets we now have\, in any language: her poems are fueled by a mordant wit\, sensual vibrancy\, and feminist brio. Impatient with pieties—whether political\, erotic\, or poetic—she writes\, like Louise Glück\, with emotional intensity and analytic coolness. This is poetry of earned and perfect pitch: the notations of an impassioned mind. I read The Threshold straight through; it will become a permanent companion.” —Maureen N. McLane. “Undeceived\, ironic\, daring\, Iman Mersal’s poems are animated by a singular sensibility. They deal candidly with real life—migration\, dying parents\, emotional entanglements—and discover general truths among the fine particulars. Robyn Creswell’s translation is deft and subtle\, and the Anglophone world is lucky to have it.” —Nick Laird. \n  \nPeter Cole and Iman MersalTuesday Nov 29 2022 5:00pm – 6:00pm\nVirtually Hosted by Elliott Bay Book Company. \nRegistration/Information
