SUMMARY:Set of Experimental Short Films: Measures of Longing: Streaming
DESCRIPTION:This set of experimental short films explores the connections between language\, memory\, and home. While inseparable elements for some\, for others they pose the very obstacles preventing them from connecting to their identities. With this in mind\, the filmmakers question how language shapes our memories of home and––inversely––how our recollections of the past are sculpted by the mother tongue we did (or did not) learn to speak. The films are poetic in form and content and take us on a journey from the coasts of Egypt to the water wheels of Hama\, Syria to an abandoned family home in Baghdad. They beautifully weave images of texts\, nature\, cityscapes\, and personal archives to convey a perpetual longing for a life that could have been. \n  \nAbout the filmmaker: \nRanda Ali is a writer and director working between Los Angeles and Cairo. She is a 4th year MFA candidate at UCLA’s directing program\, where she is a recipient of the Hani Farsi scholarship\, a full-ride award to female filmmakers from the Arab world. Randa’s work often explores themes of alienation\, defeat and the desire to connect in a continuously changing world. She is interested in telling stories of individuals through their relationship with their cities. In 2022\, Randa was a recipient of the Delia Salvi Memorial Award for Directing the Actor. She is currently in post-production for her latest short film\, Mango\, and in development for her first feature film project\, Gigi. In addition to making films\, Randa was a journalist in Egypt for nearly 8 years.

Slowly she is taken apart by the reality around her and is forced to confront her own internal anger. She meets Emad\, a young Palestinian whose ambition\, contrary to hers\, is to leave forever. SUMMARY:International Book Club with ArabLit and Alice Guthrie
DESCRIPTION:About the Book \nMalika Moustadraf is a cult feminist icon in contemporary Moroccan literature\, celebrated for her uncompromising depiction of life on the margins. \nSomething Strange\, Like Hunger presents Moustadraf’s collected short fiction: haunting\, visceral stories by a master of the genre. Here\, we tune into Casablanca’s unheard: a sex worker struggling to keep warm on the streets; a housewife flirting with strangers online; a kidney patient\, priced-out of treatment\, facing the harsh reality of his condition; and a mother scheming to ensure her daughter passes a virginity test. Something Strange\, Like Hunger is a sharp provocation to patriarchal power\, and a celebration of the life and genius of one of Morocco’s preeminent writers. \nAbout the Author \nMalika Moustadraf (1969–2006) was a writer from Casablanca\, Morocco\, celebrated for her distinctive style and experimental language. An exacting social critic\, she wrote unflinchingly about life in the margins and was persecuted for her taboo-busting subject matter. Denied the life-saving treatment she needed\, Moustadraf died at thirty-seven of kidney disease\, leaving behind a semiautobiographical novel and a collection of short stories. Something Strange\, Like Hunger is the first full-length translation of her work into any language. \nAbout the Translator \nAlice Guthrie is an independent translator\, editor and curator specialising in contemporary Arabic writing. Her work often focuses on subaltern voices\, activist art and queerness (winning her the 2019 Jules Chametzky Translation Prize). She programmed the literary strand of London’s Arab arts biennale Shubbak Festival between 2015 and 2019\, and has curated queer Arab arts events for the Edinburgh International Book Festival\, Outburst International Queer Arts Festival and Arts Canteen. Guthrie teaches translation at the University of Exeter and the University of Birmingham.

SUMMARY:International Women's Day Artist Talk with Mary Hazboun
DESCRIPTION:March 8 is International Women’s Day\, so join Museum of the Palestinian People in celebrating Palestinian women artists! This artist talk will feature Mary Hazboun\, the Palestinian artist behind “The Art of Weeping\,” a collection of 50+ original drawings currently on show at Museum of the Palestinian People in Washington\, D.C. \nAbout Mary: \nMary Hazboun is a multidisciplinary Chicago-based artist who practices “ The Art of Weeping” as an act of processing grief and somatic healing of bodies through drawing and singing. Mary’s work highlights the nuanced traumas of women and their resistance against different forms of oppression that is manifested in the military machine\, patriarchal societies\, and forced migrations. She uses art\, ceremonies\, and performance for emptying blocked emotions\, opening internal space\, and pouring in trauma-informed introspections as a form of healing. Mary was born and raised in the city of Bethlehem and moved to the U.S in 2004. \nTickets are by donation\, and after reserving your spot you will receive a Zoom link to join the artist talk on March 8 at 12 p.m. Resilience Monthly Club members can use the code 1948 to attend this event for free.

SUMMARY:Arab Film Series Online: Time for Ilhan
DESCRIPTION:Ilhan Omar\, a young\, hijab-wearing mother of three\, takes on two formidable opponents in a highly contested race for a seat in the Minnesota State Legislature. Up against a 43-year incumbent\, Ilhan is the “outsider” – a Muslim\, refugee\, woman of color seeks to challenge the party’s status quo while simultaneously defying lingering gender norms within her own Muslim community. \nTIME FOR ILHAN shadows Ilhan and her scrappy group of dedicated campaign staffers throughout the entire campaign’s dramatic uphill battle. A fresh and timely take on theclassic American Dream\, the film offers an inspiring\, stereotype-busting portrait of one of America’s brightest new political stars\, at the start of her meteoric ascent from political newcomer to becoming one of the first Muslim Women in the U.S. Congress. Her story\, part of a larger\, unprecedented wave of growing diversity in elected office around the country offers a powerful and transformative reminder of the reflective\, representative democracy that is truly possible.

SUMMARY:“When We Were Arabs – Memory\, Erasure and Cultural Connections” Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Diverse expressions of historical memory persist and gain meaning despite nationalist projects to minimize diversity in pursuit of an imaginary homogeneity that in truth exists practically nowhere in the world. The fact that such attempts at erasure are responsible not only for cultural amnesia\, but for denial of common cultural experiences that would foster acceptance instead of rejection. This workshop will place two works of historical memory into conversation. Coincidentally\, two authors representing two culturally related but geographically distant societies gave their books the same title: When We Were Arabs to invoke that claim of identity (Cuando Fuimos Arabe). They are Emilio González Ferrín\, University of Seville\, and journalist Massoud Hayoun based in Los Angeles. This conversation\, moderated by educator Dr. Rabiah Khalil\, will explore the persistence of memory and affirm the value of recognizing shared roots and accepting the richness of our diversity. \nThis program is sponsored by Georgetown University’s Center for Contemporary Arab Studies\, Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding\, the Arab American National Museum and Montgomery College Office of Advancement and Community Engagement \nThis program is made possible by a Title VI grant from the United States Department of Education\, which is funding a National Resource Center on the Middle East at Georgetown University\, and by support from the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies at Georgetown and the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. \nFor more questions\, e-mail Dave Serio at DSerio@accesscommunity.org
