SUMMARY:Voices from the Holy Land: Online Film Salon
DESCRIPTION:Two documentary films\, Voices across the Divide and Born in Deir Yassin\, pull back the carefully constructed curtain of “a land without people for a people without a land.” Since 1948\, a monumental effort has been made to promote a romantic mythology of Israel’s creation and to hide the brutal violence. But firsthand accounts by both the oppressor and the oppressed\, the expeller and the exiled\, reveal the ongoing wounds. Nothing is resolved by dialogue alone\, yet nothing will be resolved without it. Any hope of coexistence begins when the historical truth is rediscovered and acknowledged. It begins here. \nWatch the film for free at your convenience; then join the Q&A Discussion with: \nAlice Rothchild:  Author\, filmmaker\, and Assistant Professor\, Harvard Medical School (Retd.)\nEmad Moussa:  Palestinian-British journalist\, researcher\, and human rights activist\nHuda Giddens: Palestinian American educator\, Nakba survivor\nAhlam Muhtaseb (moderator):  Author\, filmmaker\, and Professor of Media Studies at CSUSB \nYou must register to join the discussion & receive access to the film:  Tinyurl.com/VFHL-May2023\nWatch the Trailers: 1) vimeo.com/818747654             2) vimeo.com/818744242 \nHow this will work: \n1 – Register here for the Voices from the Holy Land Online Film Salon: \nTinyurl.com/VFHL-May2023 \n2 – Once you register\, you will get a confirmation email from Zoom with a link to the meeting and a link with to watch the film.  (Save this confirmation letter as the meeting link is unique to your email and you must have this to participate.) \n3 – Watch the film at your convenience before the event.  Then join us with your thoughts and questions for our speakers at the Q&A Discussion on Sunday May 21\, 2023 at 3 pm ET/ 12 noon PT.

SUMMARY:Kahlil Gibran ~ In Search of a Prophet
DESCRIPTION:This event commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the publication of Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet. \nJoin Paul-Gordon Chandler in conversation with Q&A about his new book\, In Search of a Prophet: A Spiritual Journey with Kahlil Gibran\, exploring the all-embracing spirituality of Kahlil Gibran\, the Lebanese born Arab-American poet-artist\, mystic and best-selling author of The Prophet. \nIn Search of a Prophet is a fascinating journey through the spiritual life of Kahlil Gibran. Paul-Gordon Chandler explores this beloved writer and artist\, a mystic who sought to build bridges and tear down walls. \nIn Search of a Prophet is not a traditional biography\, but a compelling spiritual journey through Gibran’s writings\, art\, and the places he lived. From his birthplace village high in the snowy mountains of Lebanon\, Chandler leads us through his emigration to Boston\, art training in Paris\, career in New York\, and to the far reaching places of influence his writings and art have traveled\, from Cairo to Mexico City.

SUMMARY:Reconstructing the Ancient Nile and Human Interactions with the River: Zoom
DESCRIPTION:While many efforts to reconstruct the ancient Nile drainage system have been conducted in previous years\, they have been confined primarily to small study areas\, producing maps of fragmented sections of the ancient river. The position and dynamic nature of the entire river channel system remains undiscovered. \nSuch a poor understanding of the Nile history not only inhibits our ability to map archaeological sites accurately\, but also to understand their significance within the wider landscape.  \nUsing remote sensing\, geophysical methodologies for ground truthing\, and Egyptological research\, our team has begun the process of mapping the ancient Nile south of Cairo.   \nSpeaker Bio\nDr. Suzanne Onstine is an associate professor in the Department of History at the University of Memphis. She received her B.A in anthropology at the University of Arizona and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Near and Middle Eastern civilizations at the University of Toronto.

SUMMARY:The “Abraham Accords”: Implications for Human Rights\, a Just Peace\, and US Policy: online
DESCRIPTION:The “Abraham Accords”: Implications for Human Rights\, a Just Peace\, and US Policy\nTuesday May 2\, 2023 \n9:00 AM – 1:00 PM ET \nWith the normalization of relations between Israel and some Arab countries moving at a relatively fast pace\, and with the Abraham Accords having taken over a significant proportion of US policy conversations and priorities for the region\, there is a great need to provide a detailed and objective assessment of this new policy direction and its potential impacts and implications. \nArab Center Washington DC (ACW) and the Foundation for Middle East Peace (FMEP) are hosting a half-day conference to discuss the implications of these agreements for human rights and democracy across the region\, as well as for US policies and priorities\, regional and global alliances\, and the future of both peace and Palestinian human rights. The conference panels will also include an examination of the diplomatic\, economic\, military\, and technological components of these newly established relations\, the motivations of each of the countries involved\, and an overall assessment of the future of the Abraham Accords.

SUMMARY:Terranea: Hakawatia of the Sea
DESCRIPTION:8 p.m. ET Friday\, April 28\, 2023\nTERRANEA: hakawatia of the sea\nIn-person at AANM or via Livestream \nPurchase Tickets | Purchase Tickets for livestream\n$10 Students/Seniors\n$12 Museum Members\n$15 General Public\n$5 Livestream \nTERRANEA: hakawatia of the sea is a performance that weaves a contemporary mythology about Terranea\, a sea spirit who gathers those that have lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea. Developed collaboratively along the Lebanese and Sicilian coasts\, in the lakes of Mni Sota Makoce (Minnesota\, U.S.)\, and with Palestinian water wells and streams in mind\, this dance performance integrates oral histories around bodies of water while delving into the memories water itself can hold. Dancers\, musicians and writers come together to imagine how to embody the lessons of this essential element. At the same time\, we contemplate how our bodies are affected by absurd and deadly blockages\, on land and in water\, that impede free-flowing movement. Looking particularly into the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian land and water\, where Palestinian bodies\, homes\, olive trees and rights are under attack; where indigenous resistance roots are deep and ignited. As well as the broader crisis of the sea; whereas in its past\, the Mediterranean was a space of free and fluid migration\, the sea is now marked with invisible borders and demarcations of power\, with detrimental effects. \nThrough choreographies\, this piece asks our bodies: How do we unravel the ‘stuckedness’ that builds up and sinks deep under our skin? What grief exists at the moment of departure and which bone does it shake? Where are the songs of our ancestors stored\, and how might we listen to their rhythm? What life-giving connections can we find\, of this earth and of the mythical realm? What is the memory of the sea? \nThis work began in a solo residency at the Arab American National Museum in September of 2020. After 2.5 years of process and collaborations that took place on Turtle Island\, Lebanon and Sicily\, with artists across disciplines and places\, we will return for a residency that will culminate in sharing the performance TERRANEA: hakawatia of the sea. \nPerformance by Body Watani Dance Project; choreographed by Leila and Noelle Awadallah in collaboration with the dancers / performers Nakita Kirchner\, Sharitah Nalule\, Erica Jo Vibar Sherwood\, and Emma Marlar. Thanks to our guest performers who joined us for this tour: \nCollaborators: Original music by Renee Copeland and collaborator Peter James Roduta featuring vocalist Amal Kaawash and Clarissa Bitar. Mythology of Terranea written by Romy Lynn Attieh\, translated by Rana Issa\, and read by Wafika Loubani. Farrah Basyouni\, and Leila Awadallah. SUMMARY:Movie: Jaddoland: Streaming
DESCRIPTION:Synopsis: JADDOLAND explores the meaning of home and the search for belonging across generations. When the filmmaker returns to her hometown in the Texas panhandle to visit her mother\, an artist from Iraq\, she turns her lens on her mother’s increasingly isolated life\, as well as the beauty and solace that emerge through her creative process. Soon\, the filmmaker’s charismatic grandfather arrives\, still longing for the homeland he recently left.  While the shadow of geopolitical and historical forces looms on the periphery\, the filmmaker searches for unexpected moments of meaning in the everyday\, subtly weaving threads between past and present\, her mother’s work and her own. In doing so\, she draws an artful and deeply intimate portrait of one family reimagining its relationships to the places they call home. \nWe are thrilled to present creative and award-winning documentary JADDOLAND\, this month on the Arab FIlm Series online! \n  \nOnline Screening: April 27-30 \nFree / $5 suggested donation \nRSVP at arabfilmseries.org \nAvailable in North America \n  \nProgram includes a pre-recorded Q&A with filmmaker Nadia Shihab \nJaddoland\, Nadia Shihab\, USA\, 2018\, 90 min. \nEnglish \n  \nThe Arab Film Series online is a monthly program of films and discussions with artists and filmmakers from the SWANA region and its diasporas\, presented by ArteEast in partnership with the Arab American National Museum and Arab Film and Media Institute.

What starts in profound isolation\, becomes communal as Iraqi women\, ordinary and extraordinary\, come to her in spirit and ancestry with their personal stories of love and resilience. Together\, they offer a celebration of the Iraqi female experience and an explicit warning – the divisions Iraq endured are not unique\, Iraq is a bellwether for America now. \nNearly 20 years ago\, 9 Parts of Desire premiered to widespread acclaim on London stages and Off-Broadway\, later becoming a global theatrical phenomenon. Now\, Heather Raffo adapts her multi-award-winning solo play about Iraqi women for the screen and for our current time. From Iraq to Michigan\, Raffo transforms into a wide cross-section of Iraqi women in her inspiring exploration of love and grief within countries undone by division\, violence and loss. \nWatch an interview with Heather Raffo and AANM Public Programming Coordinator\, Fatima Al-Rasool\, on PBS NewsHour about the 20th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. \n\nHeather Raffo is a singular and outstanding voice in the American theater whose work has been championed by the New Yorker as “an example of how art can remake the world.” Having helped forge a new genre of Arab American theater\, she’s spent her career writing and embodying stories of Iraq: from the lives and dreams of Iraqi women in her seminal work 9 Parts of Desire (2003)\, to the suicidal ideation of an Iraq war veteran in the opera Fallujah (2012)\, to the restless longings of an Iraqi refugee architect in Noura (2018). A multi award-winning writer and actor\, she’s toured nationally and internationally: from the Kennedy Center to The Aspen Ideas Festival and from London’s House of Commons to the U.S. Islamic World Forum. Her newly released anthology\, Heather Raffo’s Iraq Plays: The Things That Can’t Be Said\, brings together two decades of her most groundbreaking contributions to the American theater and speaks to the bravery required to be at the forefront of a movement. Her newest Migration Play Cycle\, her most ambitious theatrical imagining in scale and scope\, situates themes around migration and the global economy. Being raised in the Midwest and the daughter of an Iraqi immigrant\, Raffo has committed her artistic practice to working across all kinds of borders: on mainstages and in rural communities; with the military and in the Arab world; in swing states and in refugee facilities. She is uniquely positioned to explore what migration means for an ever-evolving American and global identity. Photo credit for headshot is:  Satya Tisman Photography

SUMMARY:Set of Experimental Short Films: Measures of Longing: Streaming
DESCRIPTION:This set of experimental short films explores the connections between language\, memory\, and home. While inseparable elements for some\, for others they pose the very obstacles preventing them from connecting to their identities. With this in mind\, the filmmakers question how language shapes our memories of home and––inversely––how our recollections of the past are sculpted by the mother tongue we did (or did not) learn to speak. The films are poetic in form and content and take us on a journey from the coasts of Egypt to the water wheels of Hama\, Syria to an abandoned family home in Baghdad. They beautifully weave images of texts\, nature\, cityscapes\, and personal archives to convey a perpetual longing for a life that could have been. \n  \nAbout the filmmaker: \nRanda Ali is a writer and director working between Los Angeles and Cairo. She is a 4th year MFA candidate at UCLA’s directing program\, where she is a recipient of the Hani Farsi scholarship\, a full-ride award to female filmmakers from the Arab world. Randa’s work often explores themes of alienation\, defeat and the desire to connect in a continuously changing world. She is interested in telling stories of individuals through their relationship with their cities. In 2022\, Randa was a recipient of the Delia Salvi Memorial Award for Directing the Actor. She is currently in post-production for her latest short film\, Mango\, and in development for her first feature film project\, Gigi. In addition to making films\, Randa was a journalist in Egypt for nearly 8 years.
