SUMMARY:SIFF: The Mother of All Lies [Morocco]
DESCRIPTION:How do you reconstruct the past when all traces of that past have been erased? This is the dilemma that confronts filmmaker Asmae El Moudir\, in terms of both her personal history and the history of her country. In terms of her personal history\, her tyrannical grandmother has forbidden the taking of photographs in the family\, seemingly as part of a larger obfuscation of the past. In the absence of photographs\, El Moudir enlists her father\, a successful builder\, to help her construct an elaborate diorama of the street where the family lived during her childhood\, in the Sebata district of Casablanca. She populates the diorama with miniature clay figurines of her family\, friends\, and neighbors. Their real-life counterparts are then invited to revisit their memories of that time and place—in particular the 1981 Casablanca Bread Riots\, protests over the price of bread that were brutally suppressed by the police and military. On El Moudir’s street alone\, a girl her age named Fatima was killed in the street; neighbors Saïd and Abdallah were seized and tortured. These events have been suppressed in El Moudir’s family history\, as well as in the national history. But El Moudir recreates them\, retrieving what might otherwise be lost; bringing family secrets and memories to light\, and achieving some measure of justice\, if only in miniature. \n

SUMMARY:Jerusalem Story: Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Jerusalem Story tells the story of a unique city through a new lens—that of the city’s large and diverse indigenous Palestinian community. \nThis community has deep historic roots in Jerusalem and holds the strongest attachment to and love for their city. Yet\, they have been subjected to unrelenting efforts to erase their presence in\, and potential claim to\, the city—past\, present\, and future—in the service of cementing Israel’s imperative of claiming sole sovereignty in perpetuity over a “united Jewish Jerusalem.” Against this ongoing effort to erase the Palestinian cultural and community history as well as severing connection to place\, Jerusalem Story is reasserting the Palestinian presence. \nSPEAKERS: \nKate Rouhana \nFounding Director\, Jerusalem Story \nKate Rouhana is a writer\, editor\, and researcher. She has lived and worked as a journalist and researcher in Jerusalem and elsewhere in Palestine several times throughout her life. She holds an MA in Middle Eastern Studies and a BA in International Relations\, both from Harvard University. \nAmina Abdulhaq \nResearcher/Writer\, Jerusalem Story \nAmina Abdulhaq is a human rights lawyer and a researcher. Her family has deep historic roots in Jerusalem. Her work focuses on Jerusalem\, women\, and gender. Arda has delivered training\, public speaking\, and mentoring at key global events\, mostly on issues related to women and conflict\, identity\, language\, and narrative. \nNadim Bawalsa \nResearcher/Writer\, Jerusalem Story \nNadim Bawalsa is a historian of modern Palestine and author of Transnational Palestine: Migration and the Right of Return before 1948 (Stanford University Press\, 2022).. SUMMARY:Eyewitness Palestine: Live from Lyd Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Join Eyewitness Palestine on Wednesday\, March 27th at 12PM ET for our Live from Lyd webinar\, featuring a special virtual delegation led by Tamer Nafar\, who will take us around Lyd on a custom tour of the city. Lyd\, like many Palestinian cities\, is an ancient city that’s been home to multiple civilizations over its 5\,000-year history. It was the site of one of the most grueling massacres of the Nakba and remains haunted by the injustices brought on to it. Today\, the community of Lyd–one of the few cities with an integrated Palestinian and Israeli Jewish population–is marred by addiction and gun violence. We’ll hear from Lyd residents about the resilience and struggles they face in the community.

SUMMARY:Online Film Salon Discussion: Films on "Hydropolitics"
DESCRIPTION:Register: Tinyurl.com/VFHL-March2024Watch the films at your convenience! \nJoin the panel at 12pm! \n\nwww.voicesfromtheholyland.org/salonrecordings  \n\nInvitation to an Online Film Salon\nSunday March 17\, 2024\n\nControlling the supply\, distribution\, and cost of water to an occupied people is apartheid in action. Israel\, through legal and illegal means\, maintains near-complete control over the region’s freshwater aquifers\, severely restricting Palestinians’ abilities to drill wells\, install pumps\, build water tanks\, or even collect rainwater. The average Israeli consumes over 3 times the water used by Palestinian on the water grid in the West Bank (9 times the water used by those off the grid). West Bank Palestinians pay 1/3 or more of their income to Israeli companies for drinking water. Meanwhile\, Gazans are now consuming less than 3 liters per day—hardly enough for survival. \nVFHL offers three short videos describing the “hydropolitics” and structural water apartheid in the Holy Land.
