DESCRIPTION:The tale of Tinariwen begins with the story of its founding father\, Ibrahim Ag Alhabib. The son of a Tuareg rebel\, at the age of four Ibrahim witnessed his father’s execution at the hands of the government during the 1963 uprising in Mali. \nGrowing up in between the deserts and refugee camps of Algeria\, Ibrahim was regarded as a wanderer and a loner – he was nicknamed ‘Abaraybone’\, meaning ‘ragamuffin child’. One day\, he remembers\, he was watching a western at a makeshift desert cinema and was struck by a scene in which a cowboy plays a song on a guitar. Inspired\, he built his first guitar using an oil can\, a stick and a bicycle brake wire. He started to learn to play\, practising old Tuareg melodies\, modern Arabic pop tunes and the Malian blues music of Ali Farka Touré.

It also could have been called A la recherché du pays perdu (‘Remembrance of a lost country’). Except that would have been a tad Proustian for musicians who grew up pretty much between a rock and a sand dune\, in the midst of their goat herds and camel caravans. But the idea is apt. As is the painful paradox\, if you consider that while Tinariwen were busy criss-crossing the globe on their recent triumphant tours (160 concerts played in the past three years)\, expanding their audience on all five continents\, becoming one of the latest musical phenomena of truly universal calibre\, the frontiers that encircle their desert home were closing down and double-locking\, forcing them into exile to record this their 8th album.

DESCRIPTION:The best Tinariwen album hasn’t been recorded yet. Perhaps it never will be. Because the best Tinariwen music isn’t the music they perform in front of microphones. It’s the music they play at night around the fire\, back in their own country\, amongst themselves and at their own pace. Having eaten\, and drunk their tea\, the men bring out their guitars\, chat\, remember old songs and let the music come. In those moments\, the music can become like the fire\, free\, magical and impossible to stuff into a box. It rises up like a shower of sparks or a state of grace\, without premeditation; the momentary manifestation of a friendship\, a community\, an environment\, a history; the revelatory connection with something that belongs only to them\, and goes beyond them. Their discography stretching out over the last 17 years\, all the tours and the international recognition have changed nothing: Tinariwen are still a desert band\, only certain aspects of which the western music industry can ever hope to capture and present. Tinariwen existed long before any of their albums were recorded\, and they still exist quite distinct from their discographic dimension. So\, the best Tinariwen album doesn’t exist. But it’s still worth trying to go and find it.
