SUMMARY:Tatreez and Tea Virtual Lecture Registration: The Village Series
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lecture Registration: The Village Series\n\nVillage Series\, Part I \nTwo Sessions: May 8 & 22\, 2026\, Friday\nTime: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\, Zoom link will be emailed at 10am EST on event day\nInstructor: Wafa Ghnaim\nRegistration Fee: Sliding scale within range \nDescription: \nUntil the mid-twentieth century\, the dress of the Palestinian people was descriptive of identity; first by societal segment (city dweller\, villager or nomad)\, and then by the region in which the wearer came. Within each regional style\, finer distinctions in women’s dress (thobe) were expressed that shared the maker’s life and the natural world around her. Palestinian women recorded their identity in their thobe with embroidery (tatreez) through a shared illustrative language of embroidered patterns\, stitching techniques and thread colors. The thobe records unwritten stories and serves as a visual register of collective and individual identities\, documenting a woman’s village\, tribe or town\, her marital status\, her familial lineage\, and the material impact of colonialism\, occupation\, war and exile. The regional identity of the woman defines the overall governing style of her thobe\, and evidence of identity is largely through her relationship to land. \nThis course is a consolidated version of a portion of the Village Series\, with updates\, originally taught across twelve classes. Between 2020 and 2023\, Wafa taught 22 cohorts of students. This consolidated version includes the villages and cities noted below\, and does not have a stitching component. These are lectures only. \nSession 1: Jerusalem\, Bethlehem\, Tulkarm\, Nablus\, Tubas\nSession 2: Bir Saba and North Sinai\, with discussion of other Bedouin styles in historic Palestine \nAuthored by Wafa Ghnaim \nWhat You’ll Receive:\n\nLive access to both sessions\, each 2-hours that include Q&A sessions\nA recording for 7 days after the live session\n\nImportant Notes:\n\nTickets include access to both sessions and are nonrefundable.\nThis is a live virtual event hosted via Zoom. If you are unable to attend live\, you may still register to receive access to the recording.\nRegistration closes at 10:00 AM EST on the morning of the first lecture.\nWaiting room closes at 12:30 PM EST.\nAll participant names should match their registration name.\nA Zoom link will be sent to registered participants at 10am EST on event day.\nThe instructor reserves the right to review and decline registrations at her discretion to ensure a respectful and safe learning environment for all participants.\nCamera sharing is required for all attendees.\nInterested in learning something? SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture: Ethical Stewardship of Palestinian Dress
DESCRIPTION:Ethical Stewardship of Palestinian Dress: Collecting\, Cataloguing\, and a Case Study \nDate: Friday\, January 9\, 2026\nTime: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\, Zoom link will be emailed at 10am EST on event day\nInstructor: Wafa Ghnaim\, Dress Historian\, Researcher & Educator\nRegistration Fee: Sliding scale \nDescription: This lecture presents the research and findings of Wafa Ghnaim’s forthcoming article “Archiving the Thobe\,” to be published in the Journal of Textile Design Research and Practice (JTDRP). It outlines a reparative framework for the identification\, cataloguing\, and stewardship of Palestinian dress in American museum collections. Drawing on oral history\, regional provenance\, and nearly a decade of sustained research with institutions alongside the development of the Tatreez Institute collection\, the lecture examines how museum practices and fashion media produced misattribution\, decontextualization\, and exoticization. It traces how garments were extracted\, anonymized\, and reframed through biblical and Orientalist lenses\, and how these interpretations continue in contemporary digital spaces\, priming American and European audiences to adopt dehumanizing views of Palestinians today. The lecture introduces rematriation as a reparative paradigm grounded in Indigenous feminist ethics and matrilineal stewardship. The session invites scholars and cultural workers to cultivate accountable\, community-centered practices that safeguard Palestinian cultural heritage in their museum and cultural work.

SUMMARY:Tatreez in Conversation: Six Dresses\, Six Stories
DESCRIPTION:Tatreez in Conversation: Six Dresses\, Six Stories\n\nDate: Thursday\, September 25\, 2025\nTime: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\, Zoom link will be emailed 24 hours prior to event\nInstructor: Wafa Ghnaim\, Dress Historian\, Researcher & Educator\nRegistration Fee: Sliding scale\, starting at $10 \nDescription: Until the mid-twentieth century\, the dress of the Palestinian people was descriptive of identity; first by societal segment (city dweller\, villager or nomad)\, and then by the region in which the wearer came. \nAfter al-Nakba and throughout the 1960s\, the thobe transformed into a reflection of national identity. It no longer signified a woman’s village\, tribe\, or town\, her marital status\, or her familial lineage\, but instead bore the material impact of colonialism\, occupation\, war\, and exile. While the loss of regional identity in dress is registered as part of the violence Palestinians endured during al-Nakba\, this shift also marks a moment of unity in Palestinian communities newly dispersed and scattered across the region. The six-branch dress\, a dress construction that became a governing style by the 1960s\, showcases innovative approaches by women at the time to protect a vital component to Palestinian cultural heritage. \nThis lecture will focus on the six dresses presented in Tatreez Inheritance\, examining their material characteristics\, their paths to the United States\, and the ways in which one can employ the art of “close looking”—a skill Wafa learned from her mother at a young age—to uncover evidence of a woman’s personality\, vocation\, life\, and sense of pride.

SUMMARY:Virtual Lecture: The Timeless Thobe – Documenting Land\, Heritage & Culture in Palestinian Dress
DESCRIPTION:Date: Saturday\, May 24\, 2025\n\nTime: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\, Zoom link will be emailed 24 hours prior to event\nInstructor: Wafa Ghnaim\, Dress Historian\, Researcher & Educator\nRegistration Fee: Sliding scale \nThe thobe\, a traditional hand embroidered dress made and worn by Palestinian women for centuries\, is the bedrock of Palestinian identity through heritage\, culture and land. For millennia\, women in the eastern Mediterranean have showcased their skillful stitchery on their traditional dress\, displaying unique motifs\, colors and styles across the various villages of old Palestine. \nAfter 1948\, over 750\,000 Palestinians were forced into exile\, carrying their dressmaking and embroidery traditions with them into refugee camps and around the world. As the diaspora spread across the globe\, the largest and longest-standing population of displaced people in the world\, the thobe evolved into a symbol of national and cultural identity beyond borders. \nIn this live virtual lecture\, dress historian\, researcher\, and educator Wafa Ghnaim will explore the evolution of the thobe and the visual language of tatreez (embroidery) as used on traditional Palestinian dress. From village styles to diasporic adaptations\, this talk offers a compelling look at how dress documents the intertwined threads of history\, memory\, and identity. \nWhat You’ll Receive:\n\nLive access to the 2-hour lecture\nA recording for 7 days after the live session\n\nImportant Notes:\n\nTickets are nonrefundable.\nThis is a live\, virtual event hosted via Zoom.\nRegistration closes at 10:00 AM EST on May 24\, 2025.\nA Zoom link will be sent via email the day before the event.\nThe instructor reserves the right to review and decline registrations at her discretion to ensure a respectful and safe learning environment for all participants.\nSpace is limited to ensure an intimate and interactive experience.\nSharing your camera is required.

SUMMARY:Tatreez Workshops and Lectures by Tatreez and Tea - Ongoing
DESCRIPTION:Your instructor is author and scholar Wafa Ghnaim\, founder of Tatreez & Tea! \nTatreez & Tea’s mission is to preserve Palestinian embroidery and storytelling traditions in the diaspora. Tatreez & Tea is the first of it’s kind. When Wafa first founded Tatreez & Tea in 2016\, she was the only educator solely focused on Palestinian embroidery\, traveling the US and the world. Now\, new local initiatives\, culture bearers\, “tatreez circles”\, and mentors are emerging from communities around the world like never before. The tatreez revolution has gained a beautiful momentum and now is the time to join. \nWafa’s goal in her educational classes are three-fold: educate students from art history and oral history perspectives that preserve the meanings\, stories and symbolism of traditional Palestinian embroidery motifs; teach versatile skills that allow students to eventually produce large independent projects; encourage students to become creative and grow beyond simply abiding by traditional embroidery principles. \nClick here for upcoming events! \nhttps://www.tatreezandtea.com

SUMMARY:SWANA Style Series: Revival of the Jericho Thobe Ubb
DESCRIPTION:The SWANA Style Saturday Series is a lecture series focused on exploring the traditional dress of cultural communities living in SWANA (Southwest Asia & North Africa). The aim of this series is to bring awareness to styles that have generally been left out of the historical record\, however have great historical origination stories. Our cultural memory must preserve this knowledge for the next generation. \nJericho is the oldest continuously inhabited area in the world. Today\, it is the last Palestinian city before crossing the Allenby Bridge to Jordan. Geological and geographic factors have contributed to its long history of survival and an ideal place for settlement\, making it a source of envy and coveted possession for invaders who have seen Jericho as the key to controlling Palestine. In the oldest continuously inhabited place on earth\, what is the oldest traditional dress worn by the residents? And\, is it still being worn today? \nLearn the answers to these questions\, and more\, at the next installment of SWANA Style Series\, titled “Reviving The Jericho ‘Thobe Ubb’. Learn about Wafa’s most recent discovery of the Thobe Ubb at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City\, a treasure that has yet to be identified in the museum’s catalogue. \nPlease note that you are welcome to register for the lecture and watch the recording at a later time\, because it will be recorded and sent to all registrants within 24 hours of the live event. However\, the recording will be available for a limited time.

\nhttps://www.tatreezandtea.com/events
