SUMMARY:Free virtual screening of the documentary film "Jerusalem: A Rock and a Hard Place "
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register for this event \n\n\n\n\n \n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJerusalem: A Rock And A Hard Place\, a remarkable two-part documentary special from Al Jazeera English\,  goes behind the scenes with residents from each of the three monolithic faiths who share one of the world’s most extraordinary cities: Jerusalem. \nHere\, Israeli Jews and Palestinian Muslims and Christians exist in close geographical proximity and are bound in many ways by a common history. \nBut as these films reveal\, they are also worlds apart. \nThe stark\, every-day challenges of life in a city shaped by 70 years of Israeli occupation – with its oppressive discrimination\, security walls and endless petty restrictions  – aren’t always fully understood by outsiders. To followers of different faiths\, Jerusalem is a sacred and spiritual place\, to many tourists it’s most famous for its culturally significant monuments\, but to those who live here its status is much more complex.

SUMMARY:Virtual screening of the documentary film "Lost Cities of Palestine" directed by Ramez Kazmouz
DESCRIPTION:Click here to register for this event. \nAbout the Film \nAn extraordinary insight into Palestinian life in the city before 1948\, revealing the loss of a culture and lifestyle. \nThe film\, directed by Ramez Kazmouz\, is 49 minutes. \nRarely seen archival footage accompanies memories and accounts of forgotten Palestinian cities and the catastrophic effect the creation of Israel in 1948 had on them. \nHaifa\, Nazareth\, and Jaffa have all been overshadowed by Tel Aviv\, but in their day each of the Palestinian cities had magnificent commercial and cultural ability. \nMade for Al Jazeera in 2011\, “Lost cities of Palestine” provides a rare opportunity to see Palestine as it was in the 30s and 40s and learn about the everyday life and culture of urban Palestine before 1948.

SUMMARY:Palestinian Virtual Pop-up Book Club: MINOR DETAIL by Adania Shibli
DESCRIPTION:Please click here to register for this event. \nJoin writers Susan Muaddi Darraj and Sahar Mustafah in conversation about Minor Detail\, the critically acclaimed novel by Palestinian author Adania Shibli. Her book was a 2020 finalist for the National Book Translation Award and longlisted for The International Booker Prize. Minor Detail is this year’s One Book\, Many Communities selection by Librarians and Archivists with Palestine. Celebrate by reading the book and joining the discussion. \nBook Synopsis\nMinor Detail begins during the summer of 1949\, one year after the war that the Palestinians mourn as the Nakba–the catastrophe that led to the displacement and exile of some 700\,000 people–and the Israelis celebrate as the War of Independence. Israeli soldiers murder an encampment of Bedouin in the Negev desert\, and among their victims they capture a Palestinian teenager and they rape her\, kill her\, and bury her in the sand. Many years later\, in the near-present day\, a young woman in Ramallah tries to uncover some of the details surrounding this particular rape and murder\, and becomes fascinated to the point of obsession\, not only because of the nature of the crime\, but because it was committed exactly twenty-five years to the day before she was born. Adania Shibli masterfully overlays these two translucent narratives of exactly the same length to evoke a present forever haunted by the past. SUMMARY:"The Price of Oslo"\, directed by Rawan Damen
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the screening of the film “The Price of Oslo”\, directed by Rawan Damen. The film is about 100 minutes.  \nThe film screening will be followed by a discussion with the film director Rawan Damen. Screening will begin at 12 Noon US EDT; 7:00 PM Palestine time \nAbout the Film \nFor most people\, the Oslo Accords will forever be symbolised by the grand public signing ceremony that took place on the lawn of the White House on September 13\, 1993. Far fewer people\, however\, are aware of the fact that the Accords were actually signed several weeks earlier\, on August 20\, in a guest house in Oslo\, or of the seven-hour long telephone conversation\, on August 18\, that was instrumental in bringing the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Israel to the point where they could be signed. \nRawan Damen: “After six months of research and numerous interviews\, I was certain that light needed to be shed on the aspects of this story that had been intentionally left unlit.”

SUMMARY:Free Virtual Screening of the Film "Recollection" by Palestinian Director Kamal Aljafari
DESCRIPTION:To register for this event please click here. \nTo view the film trailer please click here. \nThe following description is by Shimrit Lee writing for Warscapes.com \nAbout the Film \n\n\n\n\nKamal Aljafari remembers when Jaffa was transformed into civil war-torn Beirut. Under the direction of Menachem Golan\, the production team of The Delta Force (1986) created urban mayhem\, arranging for the explosion of real buildings in the staging of a fictional battle. Aljafari recalls standing on the side of the road with a group of other children\, eagerly awaiting a glimpse of Chuck Norris racing by in a van with the name of their school\, “St. Joseph\,” printed on the door. Years later\, while flipping through television channels in a hotel room in London\, Aljafari was shocked to recognize this scene. He sat on the bed mesmerized\, not by the action shots but by the background: a clear documentation of the Jaffa of his childhood\, a city which has since been destroyed\, renovated\, gentrified and rebuilt beyond recognition. \nAljafari’s latest film Recollection is composed entirely of footage from Israeli and American fiction features shot in Jaffa from the 1960s to the 1990s\, primarily of the so-called bourekas genre that dramatized tense romantic relationships between Mizrahi male “thugs” and Ashkenazi female elites. Jaffa provided the perfect setting to construct new Israeli narratives on top of emptied Palestinian ruins. As Aljafari explains\, Palestinians were effectively “uprooted in reality and in fiction.” In Recollection\, Aljafari removes the Israeli actors to give the stage to the people who appear by chance in the background of these shots\, including both Palestinians and Iraqi Jews who were settled in the city\, enacting what he describes as “cinematic justice.” \nAljafari was born in neighboring Ramle in 1972 and later emigrated to Germany to attend film school. His previous films include The Roof (2006)\, which follows him on a return visit to the homes of his parents and grandmother in Palestine\, and Port of Memory (2009)\, which traces the eviction of his mother’s family from their home in Ajami. Aljafari’s dark humor and silent communication style liken his work to that of Palestinian filmmakers Elia Sulieman and Michel Khleifi. \nUnlike his previous films\, Recollection has no central protagonist. Aljafari moves through the found-footage\, creating the illusion of a dreamer sleep-walking through the city with a handheld camera. While Aljafari sometimes describes this unseen cameraman as himself\, each excavated memory is shared\, belonging to his grandfather\, his mother\, his neighbors\, and others who cannot return. Each footstep holds a certain urgency; as Aljafari explains\, “I walk everywhere\, sometimes hesitant and sometimes lost. I wander through the city; I wander through the memories. I film everything I encounter because I know it no longer exists. I return to a lost time.”

SUMMARY:Free Screening of the Film "Martin Luther King in Palestine"
DESCRIPTION:SYNOPSIS \nMartin Luther King in Palestine follows an African American gospel group led by Stanford professor and King scholar Clay Carson who travel to Palestine in March of 2011 to perform an original play about MLK written by Carson. While there\, the small choir of political neophytes quickly discover the repressive conditions Palestinians endure daily under the Occupation\, and empathy develops between peoples who have a shared history of oppression. An elderly Palestinian refugee couple in a final standoff with the israeli authorities to maintain their lifestyle in Roshmia; the last natural valley in Haifa. Yousef and his wife Amna\,who originally descents from the Gypsies of Palestine\, have lived in a shack all alone in their eighties since 1956 in what seems to be a life of serenity; far away from the loudness of modern life. Life remains peaceful in Roshmia until the israeli authorities endorse a new road project and order to confiscate their land\, demolish the shack and throw them out. A friend of the couple tries to secure a compensation from the municipality but the shack is Yousef’s home that he insists on keeping; living in bliss and comfort as ever\, however the negotiations continue and tension grows among the three. Furthermore\, and besides the physical displacement and despair they are nearly facing\, Yousef and Amna are about to go on separate ways.

It was mainly intended to encourage Americans to donate for the relief effort. Black and white film\, directed by Theodore A. Morde and narrated by John S. Martin. Runtime is 28 minutes.

SUMMARY:Movie: Where Should the Birds Fly
DESCRIPTION:To register for this event please click here. \nTo view the film trailer please click here. \nThe screening of the film will be followed by Q&As and discussions with film director Fida Qishta. \nAbout the Film \nWhere Should the Birds Fly is the first film about Gaza made by Palestinians living the reality of Israel’s siege and blockade of this tiny enclave. It is the story of two young women\, survivors of Israel’s Operation Cast Lead. Mona Samouni\, now nineteen years old and the filmmaker\, Fida Qishta\, now thirty-five. They represent the spirit and future of Palestinians. It reveals the strength and hope\, the humanity and humor that flourishes among the people of Gaza. Few films document so powerfully and personally the impact of modern warfare and sanctions on a civilian population.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: There is a Field
DESCRIPTION:Free Film Screening “There is a Field”\n\nSaturday\, November 7\, 2020\n12:00 PM  2:00 PM EST\n\n\nClick Here to Register for Event. \nClick here to view the film trailer. \nThe film screening will be followed by a live discussion with film director Jen Marlowe. \nIn October 2000\, a police officer shot and killed unarmed 17-year old Asel Asleh. His story is tragically familiar for Americans\, but Asel was not killed in Ferguson\, New York City\, Atlanta\, or Minneapolis. Asel was a Palestinian teenager who was murdered by Israeli police as he participated in a demonstration\, calling for an end to the Israeli occupation and settler-colonization. \nThere Is A Field began as a play about Asel’s life and his death\, told from the perspective of his older sister\, Nardin. Through Nardin’s struggle to cope with the murder of her brother\, the play offers a uniquely personal lens for learning about intersecting systems of oppression\, including Zionism\, Jewish supremacy and white supremacy—root causes of state-sanctioned violence and structural racism.

SUMMARY:Free Film Screening “My Neighborhood”
DESCRIPTION:Free Online Virtual Event \nClick Here to Register for Event. Free Event but Registration is Required. \nClick here to view the film trailer. \nSYNOPSIS \nMohammed El Kurd is a Palestinian boy growing up in the neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah in the heart of East Jerusalem. When Mohammed turns 11\, his family is forced to give up part of their home to Israeli settlers\, who are leading a campaign of court-sanctioned evictions to guarantee Jewish control of the area. \nShortly after their displacement\, Mohammed’s family and other residents begin peacefully protesting against the evictions\, determined not to lose their homes for good. In a surprising turn\, they are quickly joined by scores of Israeli supporters who are horrified to see what is being done in their name. Among them is Jewish West Jerusalem resident Zvi Benninga and his sister Sara\, who develop a strong relationship with Mohammed and his family as they take on a leading role in organizing the protests. \nThrough their personal stories\, My Neighbourhood goes beyond the sensational headlines that normally dominate discussions of Jerusalem and captures voices rarely heard\, of those striving for a shared future in the city. \nMy Neighbourhood follows Mohammed as he comes of age in the midst of unrelenting tension and remarkable cooperation in his backyard. Highlighting Mohammed’s own reactions to the highly volatile situation\, reflections from family members and other evicted residents\, accounts of Israeli protesters and interviews with Israeli settlers\, the film chronicles the resolve of a neighbourhood and the support it receives from the most unexpected of places. \nMy Neighbourhood is directed and produced by Rebekah Wingert-Jabi\, who documented Mohammed’s story over two years\, and acclaimed filmmaker Julia Bacha. It is the latest production by Just Vision\, an award-winning team of Palestinian\, Israeli\, North and South American filmmakers\, journalists and human rights advocates dedicated to telling the stories of Israelis and Palestinians working nonviolently to achieve security\, freedom and peace.
