SUMMARY:SWANA Style Series: Revival of the Jericho Thobe Ubb
DESCRIPTION:The SWANA Style Saturday Series is a lecture series focused on exploring the traditional dress of cultural communities living in SWANA (Southwest Asia & North Africa). The aim of this series is to bring awareness to styles that have generally been left out of the historical record\, however have great historical origination stories. Our cultural memory must preserve this knowledge for the next generation. \nJericho is the oldest continuously inhabited area in the world. Today\, it is the last Palestinian city before crossing the Allenby Bridge to Jordan. Geological and geographic factors have contributed to its long history of survival and an ideal place for settlement\, making it a source of envy and coveted possession for invaders who have seen Jericho as the key to controlling Palestine. In the oldest continuously inhabited place on earth\, what is the oldest traditional dress worn by the residents? And\, is it still being worn today? \nLearn the answers to these questions\, and more\, at the next installment of SWANA Style Series\, titled “Reviving The Jericho ‘Thobe Ubb’. Learn about Wafa’s most recent discovery of the Thobe Ubb at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City\, a treasure that has yet to be identified in the museum’s catalogue. \nPlease note that you are welcome to register for the lecture and watch the recording at a later time\, because it will be recorded and sent to all registrants within 24 hours of the live event. However\, the recording will be available for a limited time.

SUMMARY:Screening of documentary film "Shalal (Looted): A Reel War"
DESCRIPTION:Madafeh: Screening of documentary film “Shalal (Looted): A Reel War\,” directed by Israeli filmmaker Karnit Mandel.\nPlease click here to register for this event. \n\nAbout the Film\nHistory is archived by the victors. While searching in an Israeli archive\, filmmaker Karnit Mandel stumbles across film reels from a long-lost Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) film archive. This never-before-seen footage was seized by Israel during the 1982 invasion of Lebanon\, and Mandel begins to wonder what is so dangerous in it that requires hiding. As the truth of these historical records unravel\, she comes into conflict with the bureaucracy of Israel’s military apparatus\, which denies the possession of additional footage. Will she be able to wrestle back any of this untold history\, or will the reels forever remain buried

SUMMARY:Author Danny Ramadan at Elliott Bay Book Company
DESCRIPTION:Down from his Vancouver home where\, in addition to writing\, Danny Ramadan has been an activist and advocate\, in particular for LGBTQ+ refugees from Syria and the Middle East. The author of an award-winning Canadian children’s book\, Salma the Syrian Chef\, and a debut novel that was shortlisted for the Lambda Literary Award\, The Clothesline Swing\, he is here tonight with his new novel\, The Foghorn Echoes (Canongate Books). Set between a Damascus riven by war and Vancouver\, with time spanning a decade\, this is an extraordinary book of hard-sought love between two young men. \n”The Foghorn Echoes is a deeply moving book about conflict both internal and external\, the ways in which cold accidents – of birth\, of place\, of time – can leave a human being at war with their own desires\, their own sense of self. Danny Ramadan is a gifted\, sensitive excavator of the things that break people and put them back together\, the past as weight and lightness. In this novel he has created a world of immense sensory and emotional precision\, at once true in its living details and yet electric with the presence of ghosts.” – Omar El Akkad.\n”The Foghorn Echoes bristles. It burns bright. It shouts into the dark with a voice that hovers between a melody and a lamentation. Danny Ramadan writes in these pages with a spellbinding urgency\, stripping bare some of the most painful and fundamental truths about displacement and grief\, about rage and betrayal. In the process\, he reminds us again and again that even the worst of memories contain redemptive powers. This novel is a tender and impassioned love story for a country\, for a people\, and for all those who refuse to disappear quietly into the land of the forgotten.” – Maaza Mengiste. \nDanny RamadanFriday Nov 11 2022 7:00pm – 8:00pm\nLive/In-Person at Elliott Bay Book Company.\n1521 10th Ave. Seattle\, WA  98122
