With the focus mostly on European art movements she began to wonder what about art in other parts of the world. Going back to her roots as a Muslim\, she felt a personal connection to the rich cultural and artistic history of the Islamic lands. She began studying and practicing Islamic art and architecture using traditional tools. \nAmina has been teaching Islamic art since 2017. She hopes by sharing her love and fascination of Islamic art will work towards awareness and inclusion in art education.

SUMMARY:Reflection Session: Alert! with Andrea Assaf
DESCRIPTION:FREE with RSVP \nReflection Sessions are live\, interactive\, online events led by Arab American theatre artist and AANM artist-in-residence Andrea Assaf\, on the second Tuesday of each month this year\, leading up to the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Each session is grounded in a performance excerpt from Eleven Reflections on September*\, with special guest artists who share their work\, and engage in a “back stage” conversation about the themes of the month. \nThis February session will feature the poem Alert! by Andrea Assaf\, and explore themes of surveillance\, Islamophobia and drone technology in the post-9/11 era. Special guest announcement coming soon! \nFor questions\, e-mail Kathryn Grabowski\, Curator of Public Programs at kgrabowski@accesscommunity.org \n*Eleven Reflections on September is a poetry/spoken word\, multimedia performance on Arab American experience\, Wars on/of Terror\, and “the constant\, quiet rain of death amidst beauty” that each autumn brings in a post-9/11 world. The annual witnessing of autumn leaves becomes a metaphor for the fallen. This trans-disciplinary project includes performances with interactive media design and live music; community dialogues; visual arts exhibits; open mics\, panels and opportunities for action through partnerships with peace organizations. In 2021\, this project will be re-created as a large-scale\, community-based\, devised performance directed by Andrea Assaf\, engaging Middle Eastern/North African (MENA) and Muslim American artists and allies in San Antonio\, Texas\, commissioned by The Carver.

SUMMARY:“No One Will Do This For Us” Intellectuals of African Descent and the Nile Valley in the Early 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:The disciplinary history of Egyptology\, as it is currently written\, incorrectly excludes the voices of intellectuals of African descent. In the early 20th century\, when Egyptology was first taught in US universities\, Black scholars and writers and white Egyptologists who held university posts engaged with one another over matters related to Egypt\, ancient and modern. These conversations must be recognized as integral to the formation of the discipline in the United States and to its future. Vanessa Davies is the founding organizer of the Nile Valley Collective\, which promotes the Africanity of the ancient NileValley cultures. She is writing a book on the contributions of scholars of African descent in the US to the disciplinary histories of Egyptology and Nubiology. She is the author of Peace in Ancient Egypt\, the co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Egyptian Epigraphy and Palaeography\, and the editor of The Phoebe A. Hearst Expedition to Naga ed-Deir\, Cemeteries N 2000 and N2500. \nONLINE MEETING LINK: us02web.zoom.us…

SUMMARY:P&P Live!: Marc Lamont Hill and Mitchell Plitnick — Except for Palestine: The Limits of Progressive Politics
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 19\, 2021 – 6 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series. \nA bold call for the American Left to extend their politics to the issues of Israel-Palestine\, from a New York Times bestselling author and experts on U.S. policy in the region. \nHill and Plitnick provide a timely and essential intervention by examining multiple dimensions of the Israeli-Palestinian conversation\, including Israel’s growing disdain for democracy\, the effects of occupation on Palestine\, the siege of Gaza\, diminishing American funding for Palestinian relief\, and the campaign to stigmatize any critique of Israeli occupation. Except for Palestine is a searing polemic and a cri de coeur for elected officials\, activists\, and everyday citizens alike to align their beliefs and politics with their values. \nMARC LAMONT HILL is an award-winning journalist and the Steve Charles Professor of Media\, Cities\, and Solutions at Temple University. He is the author of multiple books\, including the New York Times bestselling Nobody\, and co-author (with Mitchell Plitnick) of Except for Palestine (The New Press). His newest book\, We Still Here: Pandemic\, Policing\, Protest\, and Possibility is a timely intervention into the popular movement for police abolition. He’s featured speaking for The Root here. \nMITCHELL PLITNICK\, the president of ReThinking Foreign Policy\, is a political analyst and a frequent writer on the Middle East and U.S. foreign policy. SUMMARY:Wajib: Streaming via Palestine Museum US
DESCRIPTION:WAJIB  \nPalestinian architect Shadi\, living in Rome\, returns home to Nazareth to help his father deliver his sister’s wedding invitations. As they two men try to bridge the gap between their different lives\, they rediscover the importance of finding “home” and community. \n\nSaturday\, February 20\, 2021\n12:00 PM  2:00 PM\nPalestine Museum US (map)\n\n\nTo register for this event please click here. \nTo view the film trailer please click here. \nAbu Shadi (Mohammad Bakri) is a divorced father and school teacher in his mid-60s who lives in Nazareth with his daughter. Now that she is about to be married\, the aging patriarch is anticipating life on his own. In preparation for the wedding\, his architect son\, Shadi (Saleh Bakri)\, who lives in Rome\, travels to Nazareth to help the family. As Shadi and his father spend a day together hand-delivering wedding invitations to each guest in keeping with local Palestinian custom\, the tense details of their fragile relationship come to a head\, while each faces the reality of their very different lives. Performed brilliantly by actual father and son Mohammad and Saleh Bakri\, Wajib demonstrates Annemarie Jacir’s filmmaking mastery through its style and subtleties.
