SUMMARY:Hend Yahya: Essential Knife Skills
DESCRIPTION:Build confidence in the kitchen by mastering knife skills! Practice knife-handling hands-on and learn how to cut safely and efficiently in this skill-building workshop. Build a foundation of knife efficiency\, including proper grip\, everyday use and professional techniques. You can bring your favorite chef’s knife or use one of ours. A light snack will be served in class. \nAbout the instructor: After cooking in Michelin Star restaurants and high volume catering events\, I made a “temporary” switch to teaching cooking classes. However\, the satisfaction and unique experience I received from teaching convinced me that this was my new culinary path. I am a graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu\, where I mainly focused on French and Western technique\, but I have deep roots in Middle-Eastern cuisine and an enthusiastic\, developed passion for Japanese cuisine. In my travels I seek out to learn something new\, and for me\, the more specific and obscure\, the better. My interests and abilities continue to range out further\, as long as I can do it\, I will teach it.

SUMMARY:No Other Land (in person) - NWFF
DESCRIPTION:Nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2025 Academy Awards!  \nBasel Adra\, a young Palestinian activist from Masafer Yatta\, has been fighting his community’s mass expulsion by the Israeli occupation since childhood. Basel documents the gradual erasure of Masafer Yatta\, as soldiers destroy the homes of families – the largest single act of forced transfer ever carried out in the occupied West Bank. He crosses paths with Yuval\, an Israeli journalist who joins his struggle\, and for over half a decade they fight against the expulsion while growing closer. Their complex bond is haunted by the extreme inequality between them: Basel\, living under a brutal military occupation\, and Yuval\, unrestricted and free. SUMMARY:Movie: The Palestine Exception [Spokane]
DESCRIPTION:After years of right-wing assaults on higher education\, attacks took a new form in 2023 and 2024 that has been described as the new McCarthyism.  As students across the country organize protests against Israel’s war on Gaza\, decades-long taboos in academia around criticism of Israel–the “Palestine exception”–are shattered. This film features professors and students as they join calls for a ceasefire and divestment from companies that do business with Israel and face waves of crackdown from administrators\, the media\, the police and politicians.  Scholars from diverse disciplines explain what is at stake in these protests and why so many young people identify with the Palestinian cause. The documentary unfolds as a story of college campuses as sites of both rebellion and repression\, places where personal and collective histories converge in unexpected ways. \n\nFacebook Page: https://facebook.com/events/s/the-palestine-exception/647578521288742/?

SUMMARY:Professor Karam Dana at Third Place Books: To Stand with Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Although Palestinians have long been demonized in U.S. media and politics\, their struggle portrayed as illegitimate\, emergent progressive voices increasingly challenge the status quo on Israel and Palestine and express solidarity with Palestinian resistance. What accounts for this change and its evolution?\nThird Place Books is pleased to welcome University of Washington Bothell professor Dr. Karam Dana for a presentation and discussion of his new book\, To Stand with Palestine: Transnational Resistance and Political Evolution in the United States. Timely and insightful\, To Stand with Palestine offers an inside look at how Palestinians have shared their story with the world and why sympathy for their plight is growing\, with significant implications for the global political landscape. He will be joined in conversation by UW professor Dr. Reşat Kasaba. This event is free and open to the public. \nFor important updates\, RSVP is highly recommended in advance. This event will include a public signing and time for audience Q&A. Sustain our author series by purchasing a copy of the featured book! \nHaving trouble accessing Eventbrite? Click here.

SUMMARY:Streaming: Movie: Abou Farid’s War (2021) by Omar Mismar
DESCRIPTION:Archaeology inspector and conservator Abou Farid shares part of his image library documenting the condition of mosaic works in the aftermath of several raids on Ma’arrat Al-Numan Museum in Idlib\, Syria as well as the independent preservation efforts that ensued. The images give way to an aleatory conversation interweaving questions of cultural heritage and territory\, preservation techniques and destruction\, traceability and looting\, and the production and circulation of images in times of war.
