SUMMARY:P&P Live!: Marc Lamont Hill and Mitchell Plitnick — Except for Palestine: The Limits of Progressive Politics
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, February 19\, 2021 – 6 p.m.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series. \nA bold call for the American Left to extend their politics to the issues of Israel-Palestine\, from a New York Times bestselling author and experts on U.S. policy in the region. \nHill and Plitnick provide a timely and essential intervention by examining multiple dimensions of the Israeli-Palestinian conversation\, including Israel’s growing disdain for democracy\, the effects of occupation on Palestine\, the siege of Gaza\, diminishing American funding for Palestinian relief\, and the campaign to stigmatize any critique of Israeli occupation. Except for Palestine is a searing polemic and a cri de coeur for elected officials\, activists\, and everyday citizens alike to align their beliefs and politics with their values. \nMARC LAMONT HILL is an award-winning journalist and the Steve Charles Professor of Media\, Cities\, and Solutions at Temple University. He is the author of multiple books\, including the New York Times bestselling Nobody\, and co-author (with Mitchell Plitnick) of Except for Palestine (The New Press). His newest book\, We Still Here: Pandemic\, Policing\, Protest\, and Possibility is a timely intervention into the popular movement for police abolition. He’s featured speaking for The Root here. \nMITCHELL PLITNICK\, the president of ReThinking Foreign Policy\, is a political analyst and a frequent writer on the Middle East and U.S. foreign policy. His past roles include vice president of the Foundation for Middle East Peace\, director of the U.S. Office of B’Tselem\, and co-director of Jewish Voice for Peace.

SUMMARY:World Premiere of 3 X 13\, an interactive online performance
DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCING THE WORLD PREMIERE OF 3 X 13 \nAn Interactive Online Performance \n  \nThursday\, February 18\nFREE/by donation \n\n\nRSVP\n\n\nJoin us for the premiere of this interactive online performance co-presented by Yaa Samar! In 12 short films with original music by Lou Tides (TEEN\, Here We Go Magic)\, 12 artists from around the globe share a journey of transformation that deeply marked their lives. These personal accounts of parenthood\, loss\, race\, exile\, dreams both realized and abandoned\, all find expression through a common choreography for body and camera\, offering an intimate glimpse into the performers’ inner and outer worlds. \nThe work culminates in an interactive 13th film that unites all 12 journeys in a virtual ensemble that invites audiences to chart their own course across 6 languages (with subtitles in Arabic and English) and 8 countries: Cuba\, Egypt\, France\, Mali\, Mexico\, Palestine\, South Korea\, and the US. \nOn February 20\, 3 x 13 will be widely released online for free\, furthering YSDT’s mission to increase access to – and promote understanding through – the arts.

Her knowledge stems from the personal stories of the women who made and worn these dresses.   \nDate: 16th February 2021 \nTime: 11 am NYC\, 4 pm London\, 8 pm Dubai \nTickets: Donation \nStudents: If you are a student or member of academia please register here to receive your complimentary registration links. \nRegistering will not only give you access to the live session but also a recorded version to catch up on in your own time. \nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:“No One Will Do This For Us” Intellectuals of African Descent and the Nile Valley in the Early 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:The disciplinary history of Egyptology\, as it is currently written\, incorrectly excludes the voices of intellectuals of African descent. In the early 20th century\, when Egyptology was first taught in US universities\, Black scholars and writers and white Egyptologists who held university posts engaged with one another over matters related to Egypt\, ancient and modern. These conversations must be recognized as integral to the formation of the discipline in the United States and to its future. Vanessa Davies is the founding organizer of the Nile Valley Collective\, which promotes the Africanity of the ancient NileValley cultures. She is writing a book on the contributions of scholars of African descent in the US to the disciplinary histories of Egyptology and Nubiology. She is the author of Peace in Ancient Egypt\, the co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Egyptian Epigraphy and Palaeography\, and the editor of The Phoebe A. Hearst Expedition to Naga ed-Deir\, Cemeteries N 2000 and N2500. \nONLINE MEETING LINK: us02web.zoom.us…

SUMMARY:Egyptian Rule and Canaanite Resistance as Seen from Jaffa: ARCE Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The excavations of the Egyptian New Kingdom fortress in Jaffa\, on the southern side of Tel Aviv were undertaken from 1956 to 2014. It was the only Egyptian fortress excavated in Canaan. Its archaeological record\, particularly the evidence from several dramatic destructions\, provides a unique perspective on Egyptian rule and local resistance to it from ca. 1460 to 1125 B.C. The archaeological evidence\, taken together with textual sources\, yields a picture of Canaanite resistance to the Egyptian military presence in Jaffa. This originated in centers located throughout the coastal plain and persisted for several centuries. This talk is drawn from excavations directed by the author and undertaken by the Jaffa Cultural Heritage Project between 2011 and 2014. Dr. Aaron Burke is the Kershaw Chair of Ancient Eastern Mediterranean Studies at UCLA.

SUMMARY:Movie: Jenin\, Jenin - Live Stream
DESCRIPTION:To register for this event please click here. \nTo view the film trailer please click here. \nThe screening of the film will be followed by Q&A discussion with film Director Mohammad Bakri. \nAbout the Film \nMuhammad Bakri’s film “Jenin\, Jenin” caused a storm in Israel and even made it to the Supreme Court (which made a decision banning its release). \nThe film deals with the events of Jenin in April 2002\, when the Israeli Army invaded the West Bank town and the refugee camp as part of the so-called “Operation Defensive Shield.” \nPalestinians as well as human rights groups accuse Israel of war crimes committed during the siege and invasion of the Palestinian refugee camp in April 2002. “Jenin Jenin” demonstrates the extent of Israeli oppression and terror and the effects they have left behind.

You are not required to take all three workshops in this winter series (Jan. 29; Feb. 26; and March 12)—you may take one\, or all. The purpose of the sampler series is to develop your stitching skills\, introduce you to new patterns throughout the region’s history\, as well as learn more about textiles produced in the Holy Land throughout the centuries. \nOpen to students of all skill levels\, learn the history and meaning behind traditional Palestinian patterns\, basics of transferring a pattern to fabric\, threading a needle\, various cross-stitching methodologies\, how to keep the back of your cloth clean\, color theory and design\, project planning\, and motif repetition. No experience is required. \n Download the supply list for this class
