SUMMARY:UW Public Lectures: Palestine to Iraq with Adam Hanieh
DESCRIPTION:While World War I is often framed as a European conflict\, its most far-reaching consequences were profoundly felt far beyond Europe’s borders. In the Middle East\, the war sparked a sweeping political crisis that ultimately led to the collapse of the Ottoman Empire. In its wake\, the European victors imposed new borders and mandates\, carving the region into fragmented zones of imperial control and influence. \nBut this was not merely a story of unchecked colonial dominance. In the postwar moment\, a spectrum of fluid\, intersecting anti-colonial movements emerged. Palestine became a key site in these struggles\, as a racialized order of settler-colonial capitalism took shape under British rule. This talk locates those movements within the broader transition from British to American imperial ascendancy\, contending that the political history of the region must be understood as integral to the global history of fossil capitalism. \nMoving beyond frameworks centered solely on empire\, the talk examines how anti-colonial actors envisioned their futures within a rapidly transforming global system—even as new hierarchies of race\, empire\, and capital were being redefined.

SUMMARY:Eight Families in Gaza: Amplifying Their Voices
DESCRIPTION:The next “Eight Families in Gaza: Amplifying Their Voices” presentation\, will be on Saturday\, March 7\, 2026 at 2:30 p.m. in the downstairs Lecture Room of the Bellingham Public Library. \nDeveloped in collaboration with members of the featured families\, this special presentation offers a chance to learn about the lives\, loves\, and challenges of eight specific families in Gaza as they try to survive the ongoing genocide. \nThis event marks the passage of 1 year since the 1st of these presentations\, held in this same location on March 2\, 2025\, & will include updates about each of the families that Whatcom County & area communities have been trying to support ever since. \nAfter a year of growing support for the ‘Eight Families in Gaza\,’ we are experiencing a slow-down in community-hosted events\, right at the same time as individual contributions to survival funds for these families are declining.\nAside from the March 7th presentation\, there are currently no scheduled events to support these families. \nThese families are still depending on us to help them access what they need to survive. They’ve been enduring so much for so long\, and now they face the harshest winter\, with widespread illness\, amidst the continued blockade\, ongoing violence\, and extreme hardship. \nThe slow-down in events & donations has created serious instability and continued vulnerability for the lives of these families\, and we are seeking more sustaining donors\, and more opportunities to connect those want to help with efforts to raise support for these families. \nDo you have ideas about fundraising events you would like to collaborate on and help make a reality? Are you a business owner who wants to host an event\, or do you have a space we could use for hosting one ourselves? Are you part of a group\, club\, or organization who can host a presentation\, a potluck\, an information session\, or a gathering? Are you already planning an event where we could set up an Info Table about these families? \nIf so\, please contact clarissjanae@gmail.com \nAnd to learn more about these families & how you can support them\, please see:\nwww.veganinbellingham.com/p/eight-families-in-gaza-amplifying-their.html

SUMMARY:Seffarine
DESCRIPTION:At a momentous first meeting at a coffee shop in Fez\, Moroccan vocalist Lamiae Naki and multi-instrumentalist Nat Hulskamp composed their first song and decided to get married. Brought together by their deep knowledge of the music of both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar – Spanish flamenco and Moroccan Arabic music – they created Seffarine.\nSeffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking square in Fez\, which is famous for the complex rhythms that ring out from the blacksmiths’ hammers\, and where Lamiae’s family is well known as masters of the tradition. Seffarine’s music embraces and extends Morocco’s musical collision between Arabic\, Iberian and West African cultures\, forging vibrant original music deeply rooted in their backgrounds in flamenco guitar\, oud and Arab Andalusian music. Nat and Lamiae built an international quintet bringing in all star musicians from Iran\, the US and Spain\, who infuse the sound with textured instrumentation and inspired improvisation. Sweeping kamancheh (Persian spike-fiddle) ornamentation plays off gritty bass grooves and explosive flamenco footwork\, with Lamiae’s fluidly riveting voice at the center\, sending up sheets of cascading Andalusi melodies punctuated by the catchy hooks of North African Chaabi\, sung in her native Moroccan Arabic. Their sound has taken them around the world\, from touring Australia and Europe to receiving grants to study Ottoman singing in Turkey\, to the Rainforest World Music Festival in Borneo\, to recording with top flamenco musicians in Spain such as Diego del Morao and Latin Grammy winner Antonio Rey.

SUMMARY:Material Identities: Regional Dress in Late Ottoman Syria
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lecture Registration\n\nMaterial Identities: Regional Dress in Late Ottoman Syria \nDate: Friday\, March 13\, 2026\nTime: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\, Zoom link will be emailed at 10am EST on event day\nInstructor: Wafa Ghnaim\, Dress Historian\, Researcher & Educator\nRegistration Fee: Sliding scale \nDescription: This lecture examines the regional styles of embroidered traditional dress produced within the geographic boundaries of present-day Syria during the late Ottoman period\, roughly 1850–1922. It centers on historical garments from various villages\, towns\, and desert regions across Syria\, as well as the textile traditions that shaped them. Participants will learn about Syria’s role as a major center of textile production\, including the rise and decline of its fabric industries and the historic cloth types most commonly used in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The lecture surveys distinctive village and regional styles\, with attention to materials\, structure\, and surface design\, beginning in the Northern Galilee and extending into southern Syria and beyond. \nThe presentation draws on surviving garments\, visual documentation\, and the work of leading scholars in the field of Syrian dress history. This research is informed by the expertise of Aida Dalati\, Anne Marie Weiss-Armush\, Hanan Munayyer\, and other leading collectors and historians in the field. Through this focused visual and historical review\, the lecture situates Syrian dress within its social\, economic\, and cultural contexts\, highlighting how regional identity was expressed as a broad regional tradition shared by communities of the eastern Mediterranean over centuries. While many have argued that the cultural knowledge of Syrian dress styles is extinct\, Wafa argues that new digital archives led by a new generation are ensuring its survival and revival. \n
