SUMMARY:Cookbook Club Potluck Supper: Boustany

SUMMARY:Seffarine - Moroccan Flamenco Fusion Live at The Firehouse Bellingham\, WA
DESCRIPTION:“Seffarine’s music can melt the coldest hearts” -Chicago Reader \nAt a momentous first meeting at a coffee shop in Fez\, Moroccan vocalist Lamiae Naki and multi-instrumentalist Nat Hulskamp composed their first song and decided to get married. Brought together by their deep knowledge of the music of both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar Spanish flamenco and Moroccan Arabic music\, they created Seffarine. \nSeffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking square in Fez\, which is famous for the complex rhythms that ring out from the blacksmiths’ hammers\, and where Lamiae’s family is well known as masters of the tradition. Seffarine’s music embraces and extends Morocco’s musical collision between Arabic\, Iberian\, and West African cultures\, forging vibrant original music deeply rooted in their backgrounds in flamenco guitar\, oud\, and Arab Andalusian music.

SUMMARY:SAFF Arab Film Club: Dreams of a City
DESCRIPTION:When his father dies\, Dib\, his younger brother and their mother move away from their hometown Quneitra to Damascus. The mother’s despotic father reluctantly takes them in and tries to force the mother to remarry. Overwhelmed by the magic of the city\, Dib wants to discover everything and is full of dreams. His daily life is shaped by insults and punishments however. Dib grows up against a backdrop of the political upheavals of the 1950s (the end of the military dictatorship in Syria and the nationalization of the Suez Canal\, Nasser’s taking of power in Cairo\, Egyptian and Syrian unification in 1958) and loses his childish illusions in the face of such violence and brutality. The dreams of the city prove to be a nightmare. Mohammad Malas’ partly autobiographical debut film marked the transition to auteur cinema in Syria.

SUMMARY:Samia at the Neptune Theater
DESCRIPTION:Bovine excision\, a mysterious phenomenon involving the bloodless surgical removal of cattle organs\, serves as the eerie inspiration for the opening track of Samia’s third album\, aptly titled Bloodless. Her voice flows through the evocative lyrics with ease\, weaving through the gentle strum of a lone acoustic guitar. The quiet intimacy builds into a storm of sound\, culminating in Samia’s layered\, ethereal harmonies that pierce with a haunting\, macabre refrain: “And drained\, drained bloodless.” \nThese emptied cattle evoke a grotesque vessel she unwittingly nurtured in an attempt to embody something both untouchable and on display\, overflowing with infinite projections and capable of driving an unrelenting pursuit of the unattainable. Through sharp images—Diet Dr. Pepper and Raymond Carver as parallel pursuits of minimalism\, white underwear and leeches\, a Degas dancer poised at the bannister—Samia examines a paradoxical existence where merit transforms into a calculated act of extraction (“I felt the pea\, can I eat it?”). This is just one strand Samia weaves into the intricate tapestry of Bloodless. \nRich with layers that shift seamlessly from sparse folk to sweeping indie-pop epics\, Bloodless explores Samia’s relationship with a fragmented\, symbolic version of Men—a patchwork of expectations and imagined standards she tried to meet\, which ultimately shaped her sense of self. “I’ve spent the past two decades unintentionally conflating men with my understanding of God\,” Samia explains. “The person I became in order to impress this imagined figure is inseparable from who I am today. With this album\, I’ve tried to confront that head-on.” \nWritten & produced in both North Carolina and her new home of Minneapolis throughout 2024\, Bloodless finds Samia reuniting with longtime-collaborator Caleb Wright and Jake Luppen for the highly-anticipated follow-up to 2023’s revered Honey\, which followed Samia’s 2020’s breakthrough debut The Baby. Across these thirteen songs\, Samia grapples with the hollow form she once embodied — a vessel that gained value through its own absence\, until playing dead became its own form of life. With Bloodless\, she endeavors to disinter the self buried beneath these carefully constructed personas\, ultimately reaching a place of acceptance for her whole\, imperfect being.

Every summer they invite guests to the farm for culinary workshops\, where you’ll spend your days milking goats\, making goat cheese\, feeding\, slaughtering\, and butchering chickens\, gathering eggs\, harvesting garden vegetables and herbs\, and foraging. Out of your day’s adventures\, you’ll create meals that will include wood-fired sourdough bread\, fresh-made yogurt\, fruit jam\, wood-oven rotisserie chicken\, herbal infusions\, wood-fired pizza\, and so much more. On top of that\, you will learn how to improvise meals based on what you harvest each day from the farm and have additional options in the farm garden to learn about local flowers\, crack walnuts from the renowned tree\, or try your hand at fermentation projects in the back kitchen. \nThis 4-day camp led by Nadia Tommalieh and the Quillisascut family will take place July 24-27 and again on September 25 -28. Lodging is included and will be in either the farm’s clubhouse\, the shepherds hut\, or the glamping tent. There are four shared bathrooms with showers. Camping is also an option for those who want to sleep under the stars. Payment plans are an option\, so please send an email to info@thepantryseattle.com if that works better for you. \nQuillisascut Farm Camp is geared for adults. Young adults can sometimes be accommodated as an exception based on their age level and interest (as well as must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Please email to check in with us first if you have anyone under the age of 18 in your party.

SUMMARY:Tatreez in Conversation: Six Dresses\, Six Stories
DESCRIPTION:Tatreez in Conversation: Six Dresses\, Six Stories\n\nDate: Thursday\, September 25\, 2025\nTime: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\, Zoom link will be emailed 24 hours prior to event\nInstructor: Wafa Ghnaim\, Dress Historian\, Researcher & Educator\nRegistration Fee: Sliding scale\, starting at $10 \nDescription: Until the mid-twentieth century\, the dress of the Palestinian people was descriptive of identity; first by societal segment (city dweller\, villager or nomad)\, and then by the region in which the wearer came. Within each regional style\, finer distinctions in women’s dress (thobe) were expressed that shared the maker’s life and the natural world around her. Palestinian women recorded their identity in their thobe with embroidery (tatreez) through a shared illustrative language of embroidered patterns\, stitching techniques and thread colors. \nAfter al-Nakba and throughout the 1960s\, the thobe transformed into a reflection of national identity. It no longer signified a woman’s village\, tribe\, or town\, her marital status\, or her familial lineage\, but instead bore the material impact of colonialism\, occupation\, war\, and exile. While the loss of regional identity in dress is registered as part of the violence Palestinians endured during al-Nakba\, this shift also marks a moment of unity in Palestinian communities newly dispersed and scattered across the region. The six-branch dress\, a dress construction that became a governing style by the 1960s\, showcases innovative approaches by women at the time to protect a vital component to Palestinian cultural heritage. \nThis lecture will focus on the six dresses presented in Tatreez Inheritance\, examining their material characteristics\, their paths to the United States\, and the ways in which one can employ the art of “close looking”—a skill Wafa learned from her mother at a young age—to uncover evidence of a woman’s personality\, vocation\, life\, and sense of pride.

SUMMARY:Seffarine (in Vancouver)
DESCRIPTION:The 35th Edition of the Vancouver International Flamenco Festival\, co-presented with Caravan World Rhythms\, proudly presents: \nThe sounds that stir the dry winds of Southern Spain and Morocco\, two countries separated by only a whisper of the Mediterranean\, are the musical DNA of a beautifully complex extended family linking North Africa and Europe. \nBorn in the ancient city of Fes\, Morocco\, internationally acclaimed singer Lamiae Naki and her ensemble Seffarine channel their deep knowledge of the music of both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar\, the crossroad where African\, Middle Eastern and European cultures meet. \nThe musicians of Seffarine\, soulful Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp\, supported by master musicians from diverse cultural backgrounds\, embrace and expand this rich musical legacy. Their dynamic performances seamlessly blend Moroccan and Arabic Andalusian music. These diverse backgrounds meld\, creating what SoundRoots describes as “an ear-caressing blend of sounds from Spain and North Africa\, spiced with a bit of fiery instrumentation and percussion.” \nTheir sound reflects Lamiae’s deep roots in Arabic Andalusian traditions (dating back to pre-Inquisition Moorish Spain and preserved in her native Morocco) and Nat’s background in flamenco guitar and Arabic oud. They are joined by Spanish flamenco dancer Manuel Gutierrez\, known for his explosive flamenco footwork; Cuban born flamenco bassist Yosmel Montejo\, whose grooving basslines drive the rhythm; and Persian multi-instrumentalist Bobak Salehi\, who brings delicate kamancheh ornamentation to the ensemble. \nTheir sound has taken them around the world\, from touring Indonesia and Europe to receiving grants to study Ottoman singing in Turkey\, to recording with top flamenco musicians in Spain such as Diego del Morao and Latin Grammy Award winner Antonio Rey.

SUMMARY:Whatcom Families for Justice: Bookshare Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:THIS SUNDAY\, SEPT 28TH 📚\n\n\n\nWe are happy to announce we’ll be hosting another Bookshare & Give-Away fundraising event at the Bellingham Public Library this weekend on Sunday\, September 28\, 2025.Books\, Zines\, and other media will be available to be shared and given away as encouragement and incentive to those who will make donations to families in Gaza. \nPalestine has been renowned for years as having one of the highest literacy rates in the world\, and as being a place where education and reading are valued\, supported\, and highly esteemed. Education is integrated into Palestinian culture\, heritage\, and identity. Which is why Israel (with the support of the United States government) has always targeted it. \nThis Bookshare fundraiser is in homage to those whose libraries and book collections have been targeted and destroyed by Israel. \nThis event is not sponsored by the Bellingham Public Library. \nWe hope to see you on Sunday to further connect and stand in solidarity with Palestinians.

SUMMARY:Mona Awad in Conversation With Jeff VanderMeer
DESCRIPTION:Mona Awad’s We Love You\, Bunny (S&S/Marysue Rucci Books) is the highly anticipated follow-up to the viral sensation Bunny\, a brilliantly written\, laugh-out-loud funny\, dark\, and delirious novel set in the Bunny-verse — a world that Margaret Atwood declared “soooo genius.” In the cult classic novel Bunny\, Samantha Heather Mackey\, a lonely outsider student at a highly selective MFA program in New England\, was first ostracized and then seduced by a clique of creepy-sweet rich girls who call themselves “Bunny.” An invitation to the Bunnies’ Smut Salon leads Samantha down a dark rabbit hole (pun intended) into the violently surreal world of their off-campus workshops where monstrous creations are conjured with deadly and wondrous consequences. When We Love You\, Bunny opens\, Sam has just published her first novel to critical acclaim. But at a New England stop on her book tour\, her one-time frenemies\, furious at the way they’ve been portrayed\, kidnap her. Now a captive audience\, it’s her (and our) turn to hear the Bunnies’ side of the story. One by one\, they take turns holding the axe\, and recount the birth throes of their unholy alliance\, their discovery of their unusual creative powers — and the phantasmagoric adventure of conjuring their first creation. With a bound and gagged Sam\, we embark on a wickedly intoxicating journey into the heart of dark academia: a fairy tale slasher that explores the wonder and horror of creation itself. Not to mention the transformative powers of love and friendship\, Bunny. Frankenstein by way of Heathers\, We Love You\, Bunny is both a prequel and a sequel\, and an unabashedly wild and totally complete stand-alone novel. Open your hearts\, Bunny\, to another dazzlingly original and darkly hilarious romp in the Bunny-verse from the queen of the fever-dream\, Mona Awad. Awad will be joined in conversation by Jeff VanderMeer\, author of the Southern Reach series.
