SUMMARY:Movie: Bank of Targets: A Glimpse Into the Devastation Unleashed by Israeli Bombing of Gaza [virtual]
DESCRIPTION:To register for this event please click here. \nThe screening of the film will be followed by Q&A discussion with fthe audience. Running time is 26 Minutes. English subtitles. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Film\nBank of Targets: A Glimpse Into the Devastation Unleashed by Israeli Bombing of Gaza \nIntroduction\n“Bank of Targets\,” a powerful documentary film directed by acclaimed Palestinian filmmaker/journalist the late Rushdi Sarraj (he was murdered by Israeli bombings last week)\, sheds light on the horrifying aftermath of the relentless Israeli bombing campaigns on the Gaza Strip. Released amidst rising concerns over the recurring cycle of violence\, the film offers a harrowing examination of the extensive destruction and immense loss of life caused by these devastating attacks. Through its poignant storytelling and compelling visuals\, “Bank of Targets” provides a insight into the profound impact of Israeli airstrikes on the lives of Palestinians in Gaza. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Devastating Reality\nThe film captures the heart-wrenching scenes that become all too common in Gaza\, as families are torn apart and entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble. Through testimonies of survivors\, eyewitness accounts\, and comprehensive footage\, “Bank of Targets” skillfully depicts the indiscriminate nature of the Israeli airstrikes. It showcases the widespread devastation\, explicitly highlighting the destruction of essential civilian infrastructure\, including hospitals\, schools\, and residential areas. \nThe Human Toll\nIn “Bank of Targets\,” the film’s lens focuses on the true victims—the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire. By highlighting personal stories\, the documentary humanizes the conflict\, revealing that behind the staggering statistics lies a multitude of shattered dreams\, irreparable loss\, and profound grief. It introduces us to families who have lost loved ones\, children who have been robbed of their childhood\, and individuals grappling with a future plagued by uncertainty and trauma. \nConclusion\nThrough its well-crafted narrative and compelling storytelling\, “Bank of Targets” serves as a powerful tool for increasing awareness about the extensive destruction and loss of life endured by Palestinians in Gaza following Israeli bombings. By amplifying the voices of survivors and highlighting the urgent need for justice\, the documentary prompts viewers to reflect on the profound human cost of violence and reconsider the importance of finding a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian issue. In a world marked by growing calls for empathy and understanding\, “Bank of Targets” contributes to a narrative that strives for peace\, justice\, and the recognition of the inherent dignity and rights of every individual\, regardless of their nationality or origin.

In light of the Western media’s biased coverage and one-sided narrative that often favors Israel\, it is crucial to provide an alternative perspective that delves into the historical context and Israel’s actions over the past 75 years that have contributed to the current situation. Our aim is to present a comprehensive understanding of the complex dynamics at play and offer an opportunity for visitors to uncover the true facts. By joining us at the open house\, attendees will have the chance to learn about the rich historical background of Palestine and gain valuable insights that are often omitted from mainstream narratives. We invite all interested individuals to come and engage in meaningful conversations that have the potential to broaden horizons and foster a more comprehensive understanding of the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice.

SUMMARY:Rajaa Gharbi\, Selected Works: Exhibition by Rajaa Gharbi
DESCRIPTION:VISUAL ART Every Thursday–Saturday\, from November 2–December 2 12–5 pm \nFeaturing original acrylic paintings and prints from several previous solo exhibitions\, artist Rajaa Gharbi‘s exhibition\, Rajaa Gharbi\, Selected Works is largely inspired by a sense of realism and the need for collective\, life-nurturing visions and practices. \nGharbi’s works are never about just one or two themes. Among her earliest and indelible art influences and “training” grounds were her mother’s clothing designs\, her father’s storytelling feats\, her native city’s omnipresent visual worlds of hand-weaving arts\, first centuries BCE monumental representational mosaic “paintings”\, and the vestiges of a bygone Roman Empire. Visual storytelling and ancient scripts have held her focus since childhood. There\, the first waves of infinite geometric designs and limitless color palettes permeated her psyche. Hopping around or staring at the fallen or still standing marble statues of all sizes\, texts hand-engraved on steles\, and very young olive trees cracking life open right through ancient fallen columns in her native Carthage\, Tunisia and across North Africa are still among her sources of inspiration. She is also inhabited and taught by the geographic and human landscapes of the American Northwest.

SUMMARY:Gathering and Webinar: Violations of International Humanitarian Law
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday 11/2 we will join with @bayanseattle @samidounseattle and allies to hold a gathering (and webinar) from 6:30-8:00 PST discussing these violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL)\, especially urgent as we have now lost contact with those on the ground in Gaza. \n✉️ We are calling for sign-on support to a letter from Labor for Palestine to cease the genocide in Gaza now\, as well as a letter to US Congress denouncing the extrajudicial killing of Jude Fernandez (both sign-ons are linked in event registration). \nThe 11/2 gathering will be held at MPOP x CID Coalition Worker Center\, with remote webinar access also available; registration and letter sign-on info available here: tinyurl.com/humanrightsunderattack \n  \nOn October 3rd\, Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU) released an urgent update on the brutal killing of Jude Fernandez\, a Filipino labor leader who spent his time organizing workers to campaign for higher wages and better working conditions. Jude Fernandez started labor organizing during the era of Martial Law under Marcos Sr. and had continued the work until now. \nThe Philippine National Police (PNP) who perpetrated the murder\, claimed that Jude attempted to fight back in an attempt to justify the killing\, despite him being an unarmed unionist. This is the 72nd labor-related killing in the Philippines since 2016 and the fourth within this year of 2023\, by paramilitary units funded by the United States. We view these attacks as not just against one person\, but the whole of the Philippine labor movement\, and of the international labor movement. \nUS funding and support for attacks against the people is not isolated to the Philippines\, as we have continued to see with the most recent bombings on the Palestinian people. The Biden administration has continued to express support for the apartheid state of Israel\, despite their campaign of genocide against civilians in Gaza and the West Bank\, dropping 6\,000 bombs between October 7th and October 12th\, the use of White Phosphorous bombs against populated areas\, as well as en masse “terror-tagging” and continued bombings of civilians and evacuation routes.

SUMMARY:Ghassan Zeineddine in Conversation With Omar El Akkad [Portland]
DESCRIPTION:Spanning several decades\, Ghassan Zeineddine’s debut collection examines the diverse range and complexities of the Arab American community in Dearborn\, Michigan. In ten tragicomic stories\, Zeineddine explores themes of identity\, generational conflicts\, war trauma\, migration\, sexuality\, queerness\, home and belonging\, and more. In Dearborn (Tin House)\, a father teaches his son how to cheat the IRS and hide their cash earnings inside of frozen chickens. Tensions heighten within a close-knit group of couples when a mysterious man begins to frequent the local gym pool\, dressed in Speedos printed with nostalgic images of Lebanon. And a failed stage actor attempts to drive a young Lebanese man with ambitions of becoming a Hollywood action hero to LA\, but Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents have other plans. By turns wildly funny\, incisive\, and deeply moving\, Dearborn introduces readers to an arresting new voice in contemporary fiction and invites us all to consider what it means to be part of a place and community\, and how it is that we help one another survive. Zeineddine will be joined in conversation by Omar El Akkad\, author of What Strange Paradise.
