He made an honorable history during his work as a Patriarch. His work marked significant milestones in the struggle against injustice and oppression to bring peace to the country of the Prince of Peace. He is still active in many initiatives and activities to spread his human and spiritual message in Palestine and the world. The film is a humble contribution to honor the Patriarch and shed light on some crucial moments in his life\, his thought\, and his constant obsession with the consolidation of love\, justice\, and peace.

DESCRIPTION:PROGRAM DESCRIPTION \nFor generations\, Palestinian women have gathered with their daughters to work collectively on embroidery projects\, bonding with one another over a cup of tea. Guided by Wafa Ghnaim\, who began her training in embroidery with her mother at age 2\, learn the basic Palestinian cross-stitch and how to create a tatreez sampler\, using a standard size sheet of Aida cloth fabric and one that can incorporate numerous patterns and eventually become a wall-hanging. \nIf you have already begun a tatreez sampler\, this workshop will teach you traditional patterns and stitching strategies to further develop your piece. You are not required to take all three workshops in this winter series (Jan. 29; Feb. 26; and March 12)—you may take one\, or all. The purpose of the sampler series is to develop your stitching skills\, introduce you to new patterns throughout the region’s history\, as well as learn more about textiles produced in the Holy Land throughout the centuries. \nOpen to students of all skill levels\, learn the history and meaning behind traditional Palestinian patterns\, basics of transferring a pattern to fabric\, threading a needle\, various cross-stitching methodologies\, how to keep the back of your cloth clean\, color theory and design\, project planning\, and motif repetition. SUMMARY:Eggstraordinary Objects: ostrich eggs as luxury items in the ancient Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Tamar Hodos\, University of Bristol \nDecorated ostrich eggs were traded as luxury items from the Middle East to the western Mediterranean during the second and first millennia BCE. The eggs were engraved\, painted\, and occasionally embellished with ivory\, precious metals and faience fittings. While archaeologists note their presence as unusual vessels in funerary and dedicatory contexts\, little is known about how or from where they were sourced\, decorated and traded. An ongoing project between researchers at Bristol University and the British Museum has established techniques to identify where the eggs originated and how they were decorated. El-Sayed and Johnson offer a serious examination of this complex subject\, offering viewpoints on how Medicare for All would transform the way we give\, receive\, and pay for healthcare in America. Don’t miss this conversation that is perhaps more significant than ever before. \nAbdul El-Sayed\, MD\, DPhil\, is a physician\, epidemiologist\, public health expert\, and progressive activist. He rebuilt Detroit’s Health Department after the City’s bankruptcy as the youngest big-city health commissioner in a major US city. He ran for Governor of Michigan in 2018 on a state-level single-payer platform in a bid endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders\, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez\, The Nation\, and Current Affairs. He holds a doctorate in Public Health from University of Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar\, and a medical degree from Columbia University.

DESCRIPTION:To register for this event please click here. \nTo view the film trailer please click here. \nThe following description is by Shimrit Lee writing for Warscapes.com \nAbout the Film \n\n\n\n\nKamal Aljafari remembers when Jaffa was transformed into civil war-torn Beirut. Under the direction of Menachem Golan\, the production team of The Delta Force (1986) created urban mayhem\, arranging for the explosion of real buildings in the staging of a fictional battle. Aljafari recalls standing on the side of the road with a group of other children\, eagerly awaiting a glimpse of Chuck Norris racing by in a van with the name of their school\, “St. Joseph\,” printed on the door. Years later\, while flipping through television channels in a hotel room in London\, Aljafari was shocked to recognize this scene. He sat on the bed mesmerized\, not by the action shots but by the background: a clear documentation of the Jaffa of his childhood\, a city which has since been destroyed\, renovated\, gentrified and rebuilt beyond recognition. \nAljafari’s latest film Recollection is composed entirely of footage from Israeli and American fiction features shot in Jaffa from the 1960s to the 1990s\, primarily of the so-called bourekas genre that dramatized tense romantic relationships between Mizrahi male “thugs” and Ashkenazi female elites. Jaffa provided the perfect setting to construct new Israeli narratives on top of emptied Palestinian ruins. As Aljafari explains\, Palestinians were effectively “uprooted in reality and in fiction.” In Recollection\, Aljafari removes the Israeli actors to give the stage to the people who appear by chance in the background of these shots\, including both Palestinians and Iraqi Jews who were settled in the city\, enacting what he describes as “cinematic justice.” \nAljafari was born in neighboring Ramle in 1972 and later emigrated to Germany to attend film school. His previous films include The Roof (2006)\, which follows him on a return visit to the homes of his parents and grandmother in Palestine\, and Port of Memory (2009)\, which traces the eviction of his mother’s family from their home in Ajami. Aljafari’s dark humor and silent communication style liken his work to that of Palestinian filmmakers Elia Sulieman and Michel Khleifi. \nUnlike his previous films\, Recollection has no central protagonist. Aljafari moves through the found-footage\, creating the illusion of a dreamer sleep-walking through the city with a handheld camera. While Aljafari sometimes describes this unseen cameraman as himself\, each excavated memory is shared\, belonging to his grandfather\, his mother\, his neighbors\, and others who cannot return. Each footstep holds a certain urgency; as Aljafari explains\, “I walk everywhere\, sometimes hesitant and sometimes lost. I wander through the city; I wander through the memories. I film everything I encounter because I know it no longer exists. I return to a lost time.”

He suggests that any solution be predicated on the basic existential needs of the two parties\, which he lays out in exceptional detail. He formulates a way forward for a one-state solution that challenges both Zionism and Palestinian nationalism. This book invites readers to begin a new conversation based on reality: two peoples will need to live together in some sort of unified state. Guided by Wafa Ghnaim\, who began her training in embroidery with her mother at age 2\, learn the basic Palestinian cross-stitch and how to create a tatreez sampler\, using a standard size sheet of Aida cloth fabric and one that can incorporate numerous patterns and eventually become a wall-hanging. \nIf you have already begun a tatreez sampler\, this workshop will teach you traditional patterns and stitching strategies to further develop your piece. You are not required to take all three workshops in this winter series (Jan. 29; Feb. 26; and March 12)—you may take one\, or all. The purpose of the sampler series is to develop your stitching skills\, introduce you to new patterns throughout the region’s history\, as well as learn more about textiles produced in the Holy Land throughout the centuries. \nOpen to students of all skill levels\, learn the history and meaning behind traditional Palestinian patterns\, basics of transferring a pattern to fabric\, threading a needle\, various cross-stitching methodologies\, how to keep the back of your cloth clean\, color theory and design\, project planning\, and motif repetition. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation between Author and Activist Anan Ameri and Professor and Activist Nadine Naber \nDr. Anan Ameri is a scholar\, author\, activist\, and community organizer. She is the founding Director of the Arab American National Museum (AANM) and Palestine Aid Society of America. She holds a BA in Sociology from the University of Jordan\, an MA from Cairo University\, and a PhD from Wayne State University in Detroit. She was a fellow at the Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College\, a visiting scholar in Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University\, and served as Interim Director of the Institute for Jerusalem Studies. The recipient of numerous awards\, Anan was inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame in Lansing\, Michigan in 2016 and received ACCESS’s Arab American of the Year award in 2020. She enjoys writing and has authored and edited several articles and publications. She lives in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. \nDr. Nadine Naber is Professor in the Gender and Women’s Studies Program and the Global Asian Studies Program and holds an affiliation with the Department of Anthropology at UIC. Dr. Naber’s research interests lie at the intersections of transnational feminisms; women of color and queer of color theory; de-colonizing feminisms; empire studies; critical race studies; and Middle East Studies; and Arab American Studies. Dr. Naber is author of Arab America: Gender\, Cultural Politics\, and Activism (NYU Press\, 2012). She is co-editor of the books Race and Arab Americans (Syracuse University Press\, 2008); Arab and Arab American Feminisms\, winner of the Arab American Book Award 2012 (Syracuse University Press\, 2010); and The Color of Violence (South End Press\, 2006). Dr. Naber is an editorial board member of the Critical Ethnic Studies Journal\, the Journal of Palestine Studies\, and Al-Shabakah. Dr. Naber co- founded Arab and Muslim American Studies (an Ethnic Studies unit within the Program in American Culture) at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. Now that she is about to be married\, the aging patriarch is anticipating life on his own. In preparation for the wedding\, his architect son\, Shadi (Saleh Bakri)\, who lives in Rome\, travels to Nazareth to help the family. As Shadi and his father spend a day together hand-delivering wedding invitations to each guest in keeping with local Palestinian custom\, the tense details of their fragile relationship come to a head\, while each faces the reality of their very different lives. Performed brilliantly by actual father and son Mohammad and Saleh Bakri\, Wajib demonstrates Annemarie Jacir’s filmmaking mastery through its style and subtleties.
