SUMMARY:The Journey of Culture\, Part 1: The Silk Road: Bothell Cultural Night
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, July 28th | 6 – 9 p.m. | City Hall Plaza & 101st Ave NE\nEvent Overview: The Journey of Culture\, Part 1: The Silk Road\nIncorporating the tenets of our 2023 Cultural Focus\, Lagom\, NW Folklife presents “The Journey of Culture.” Lagom\, a Scandinavian term\, specific to Swedish culture\, signifies balance. Not too much\, not too little\, just right. To find that balance requires adjustment and acclimatization to your surroundings and the people you encounter along the way. That balance is a journey.   \nThe global evolution and expansion of cultural ideas and expressions are\, in no small part\, a by-product of commerce\, trade routes\, and people’s capacity and energies to swap\, barter\, and exchange goods and services. These transactions weren’t limited to commodities but necessarily included dialogue in music\, language\, art\, and dance. \nThe Silk Road\, which stretched from China to the Mediterranean Sea\, connecting myriad cultures through the Eurasian continent\, was one of the first transnational trade routes connecting people from vastly disparate lands and cultures. Join us for an evening that celebrates the merging and mixing of cultures across lands far and wide as we bring music\, craft\, and food from across the continents of Asia\, Africa\, and Europe.   \nPerformances on July 28th\, 2023 will include:\n\nInochi Taiko (Japan Taiko Drumming)\nZJE Music (Mongolian Multi-Instrumental Musical Band)\nAlefba Choir (Iranian Choir)\nGeorge Sadak Band (Egyptian Tabla Player – Dumbek)\nBulgarian Voices of Seattle Women’s Choir. (Bulgarian Choir)\nOleaje Flamenco (Flamenco Music and Dance)\n\nVendors on July 28th\, 2023 will include:\nAlFarid Handmade Accessories\, Celestial Attire\, Dyme Designs\, Emmila\, Hana Naturals\, Lunaraya\, Mazart Gallery\, Nature’s Element Co.\, Nísh René LLC\, Oddleee Enuff by Sylvia\, Patisserie De Zee\, Reham’s Cake Gallery\, Silkin\, The Lucky Charm\, Tresses Essentials\, and Zahira Studio. \n\nFree Community Event\nThere is provided outdoor seating; bringing low-back chairs is welcomed.\nThere will be performances\, vendors\, and activities.\nParking: There is a public gravel parking lot on the corner of SR522 & Bothell Way NE\, and there is free public parking at the City Hall Parking Garage. SUMMARY:Seffarine at New Traditions
DESCRIPTION:Moroccan\nAndalusian\nFlamenco\n\n\n\n\n\n“gorgeous intersection of Spanish flamenco\, Arabic and Andalusian music\, Persian classical\, and jazz” -Bass Player Magazine\nThe sounds that stir the dry winds of Southern Spain and Morocco\, two countries separated by only a whisper of the Mediterranean\, are the musical DNA of a beautifully complex extended family linking North Africa and Europe.\nThe musicians of Seffarine\, soulful Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp\, supported by master musicians of diverse cultures\, embrace and extend this rich legacy. Their exciting performances masterfully combine explosive flamenco footwork\, exotic instrumentation and grooving basslines. These diverse backgrounds meld\, creating what SoundRoots describes as “an ear-caressing blend of sounds from Spain and North Africa\, spiced with a bit of fiery instrumentation and percussion.”\n“Seffarine’s music can melt the coldest hearts” -Chicago Reader\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Rare Film Screening: Marking the Anniversary of Tall El-Zaatar
DESCRIPTION:The 2023 Mizna Film Series highlights archival works and initiatives that document Palestine’s struggle for liberation. \nMarking the 47th anniversary of the Tall el-Zaatar Massacre\, this August\, Mizna Film Series presents Tall el-Zaatar\, the recently recovered and restored documentary directed by Mustafa Abu Ali\, Pino Adriano\, and Jean Chamoun. \nThe film documents the August 12\, 1976 massacre of Palestinian and Lebanese refugees at Tall el-Zaatar\, a UN-administered refugee camp in northeast Beirut. Produced after the massacre\, but featuring footage shot before and during the siege leading up to it\, Tall el-Zaatar reconstructs the history of the camp and recounts the long months of assault and resistance through the voices of the many survivors. \n  \nLost\, Covered and Restored: \nTall el-Zaatar was produced in two versions: one in Arabic for the Palestinian Cinema Institution of the PLO in Beirut\, and the other dubbed into Italian for TV broadcast. Arabic film prints were damaged and lost following the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon and the subsequent plundering of PLO archives. Between 2012 and 2014\, filmmaker Monica Maurer and artist Emily Jacir rediscovered the rushes of the film\, including the original soundtrack in Arabic\, which were kept at the Audiovisual Archive of the Democratic and Labour Movement (AAMOD) in Rome. Maurer and Jacir dedicated themselves to salvaging the rushes\, restoring and digitizing them in order to make the film available to the public and safeguard these images as part of Palestinian collective memory. \nWatch WORLDWIDE VIRTUALLY August 24–27\, 2023.
