SUMMARY:Town Hall Seattle: Raja Shehadeh — 'We Could Have Been Friends\, My Father and I: A Palestinian Memoir'
DESCRIPTION:About the event. . .\nIn his life\, Aziz Shehadeh was many things — among them a lawyer\, a political detainee\, and the father of activist and author\, Raja Shehadeh. \nRaja’s latest book\, We Could Have Been Friends\, My Father and I\, is a subtle psychological portrait of a complicated father-son relationship. Set against the backdrop of continuing political unrest\, Raja describes his failure as a young man to recognize his father’s courage as an activist\, and\, in turn\, his father’s inability to appreciate Raja’s own efforts in campaigning for Palestinian human rights. Then in 1985\, Aziz Shehadeh is murdered\, and Raja undergoes a profound and irrevocable change. \nWe Could Have Been Friends acts in part as the story of Palestine’s continual fight against multiple foreign powers\, but at its core presents a poignant unraveling of a complex father-son relationship\, unlike many we have seen before.

SUMMARY:Voices from the Holy Land: Online Film Salon
DESCRIPTION:Two documentary films\, Voices across the Divide and Born in Deir Yassin\, pull back the carefully constructed curtain of “a land without people for a people without a land.” Since 1948\, a monumental effort has been made to promote a romantic mythology of Israel’s creation and to hide the brutal violence. But firsthand accounts by both the oppressor and the oppressed\, the expeller and the exiled\, reveal the ongoing wounds. Nothing is resolved by dialogue alone\, yet nothing will be resolved without it. Any hope of coexistence begins when the historical truth is rediscovered and acknowledged. It begins here. \nWatch the film for free at your convenience; then join the Q&A Discussion with: \nAlice Rothchild:  Author\, filmmaker\, and Assistant Professor\, Harvard Medical School (Retd.)\nEmad Moussa:  Palestinian-British journalist\, researcher\, and human rights activist\nHuda Giddens: Palestinian American educator\, Nakba survivor\nAhlam Muhtaseb (moderator):  Author\, filmmaker\, and Professor of Media Studies at CSUSB \nYou must register to join the discussion & receive access to the film:  Tinyurl.com/VFHL-May2023\nWatch the Trailers: 1) vimeo.com/818747654             2) vimeo.com/818744242 \nHow this will work: \n1 – Register here for the Voices from the Holy Land Online Film Salon: \nTinyurl.com/VFHL-May2023 \n2 – Once you register\, you will get a confirmation email from Zoom with a link to the meeting and a link with to watch the film.  (Save this confirmation letter as the meeting link is unique to your email and you must have this to participate.) \n3 – Watch the film at your convenience before the event.  Then join us with your thoughts and questions for our speakers at the Q&A Discussion on Sunday May 21\, 2023 at 3 pm ET/ 12 noon PT.

SUMMARY:Sam Kigar and Rokiatou Soumaré\, “Translation as Territorialization: Language and Belonging in Modern Africa” | A Translation Studies Hub Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:“Against Translation as Metaphor: Sultanic Languages of Sovereignty in Late 19th Century Morocco”\nSam Kigar (Islamic Studies\, Department of Religion\, University of Puget Sound) challenges a scholarly tradition of describing religions as languages that can be translated into one another. He examines the translation of two letters by Sultan Hassan I (r. 1873-1894) about his journeys to the Sūs region of southern Morocco. The Sultan was not translating forms of Islamic sovereignty into “foreign” territorial terms\, instead\, he was participating in the territorialization of the Sūs. \n“Decentering French to re-center Wolof: Translation as a Nationalist Performance in Boubacar Boris Diop’s Work” \nRokiatou Soumaré (French and Francophone Studies\, University of Puget Sound) proposes that Senegalese novelist Boubacar Boris Diop positions himself in his work as a nationalist linguistic activist by writing in Wolof instead of French\, Senegal’s lingua franca. For Diop\, translating these essential pieces initiated an ambitious political project that aligns with his nationalistic views\, and his rejection of French hegemony. \n  \n\n\n\nEVENT INTERVAL\nSingle day event\n\n\nCAMPUS LOCATION\nCommunications Building (CMU)\n\n\nCAMPUS ROOM\n202\n\n\nEVENT TYPES\nLectures/Seminars\n\n\nEVENT SPONSORS\nSimpson Center for the Humanities\, humanities@uw.edu\, 206.543.3920\nDepartment of French and Italian Studies

SUMMARY:Cooking Class: Spring In Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Spring in Palestine is a time when simple\, seasonal ingredients are transformed into a delicious family meal. In this class Nadia Tommalieh will introduce you to Palestinian home cooking via classic dishes remembered from her childhood\, with stories of spring foraging traditions. You’ll make sorar freekeh bil lahmeh (baked freekeh and beef pastries); salatet betinjan bil laban (fried eggplant salad); hindbeh bil zeit (sautéed dandelion greens with pomegranate molasses and lemon); and\, for dessert\, mhalabiyeh bi ma’ elzaher (milk pudding infused with orange blossom water\, topped with crushed pistachios and dried rose petals). \nPlease note: some classes can be adjusted for students with dietary restrictions\, but many cannot. If you’re vegetarian\, pescatarian\, or gluten-free\, you can use the drop-down menu on our events page to view the best classes to fit your needs. If a class you’re interested in doesn’t appear in that filtered view\, please email us before registering and we’ll see if the class’s menu can be modified.
