SUMMARY:Teach In : A Predatory State: Israeli Systemic Sexualized and Gendered Violence Against Palestinians\,
DESCRIPTION:Please join us and the California Coalition for Women Prisoners (CCWP)for a critical online teach-in to learn about the landmark report\, A Predatory State: Israeli Systemic Sexualized and Gendered Violence Against Palestinians\, released this summer. The teach-in will be on Sunday\, Nov. 8\, 10 am PT/1 pm ET. \nThe report breaks down the history of sexualized and gendered violence in the development of the Israeli Zionist state from the Nakba in 1948 up through the current period of full-scale genocide. Rigorously researched and referenced\, the report makes clear that sexualized violence is not an episodic add-on to occupation and genocide. Rather\, it is a foundational\, legalized aspect of the Zionist project which has continuously relied on barbaric methods to try to erode the resistance of Palestinians. \nWe are honored to partner with CCWP in amplifying our report. CCWP is an organization that is deeply involved in the struggle against gendered violence in California’s prisons and jails\, and deeply invested in the Free Palestine Movement. \nJoin us for an overview of the report and to hear direct testimony from special guest speakers. We also invite you to come prepared to share a photo\, art piece\, reflection\, or commitment to add to our online altar. See examples here \nCome to learn\, bear witness and understand more about the report. The only way to ethically and effectively achieve justice for Palestinian survivors of sexualized and gendered violence requires ending the genocide\, the Occupation\, and the siege of Palestine\, securing the immediate release of all the political prisoners\, and achieving an indefinite closure of all detention and prison facilities.

SUMMARY:Session 5: The Ramallah Region: The Village Series with Tatreez and Tea
DESCRIPTION:Ramallah!\nRamallah was an important center of Palestinian embroidery\, with distinctive styles that influenced dress traditions throughout central Palestine. Between 1850 and 1948\, successive waves of change in fashion shaped the region’s dress traditions and influenced the styles worn elsewhere in central Palestine. The Ramallah thobe\, worked in shades of red silk cross-stitch embroidery on roumi handwoven linen\, is characterized by motifs drawn from local flora and fauna. Drawing on a range of historical sources\, including the writings of Hanan Munnayer\, Widad Kawar\, and Jehan Rajab\, this updated lecture examines the changing fashions of Ramallah\, their development and documentation\, and their continued significance today. It also considers the embroidered garments of the Qadisha Valley mummies in Lebanon and their significance for understanding Palestinian dress.\n  \nPlease note that this lecture will be prerecorded and uploaded to The Village Series membership level on or before November 1\, 2026. It will remain available to members without an expiration date. New lectures will be added to this membership level monthly. Join me!

SUMMARY:The Book of Genocides: Dana Mashoian Walrath
DESCRIPTION:Dana Mashoian Walrath discusses her new book The Book of Genocides\, a haunting graphic narrative that compels readers to confront the most harrowing chapters of human history not as distant events but as visceral experiences.\n\n\nRegistration is not required\, but helps us anticipate audience size. If you’d like to RSVP\, please do so here! \nIn this haunting graphic narrative\, an award-winning writer\, artist\, and descendant of genocide survivors brings history’s darkest horrors to life\, calling on us to remember\, repair\, and resist. \nDana Mashoian Walrath covers ten major atrocities across five centuries: the mass slaughter of the First Peoples of the Americas\, the brutalization of Black Americans\, the devastation of Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders\, the Armenian genocide\, the Holocaust\, the Cambodian killing fields\, the Rwandan genocide\, the Bosnian genocide\, the deadly persecution of the Rohingya in Myanmar\, and the genocide in Gaza. \nWalrath makes plain that the purpose of genocide is always a land grab\, and its central apparatus is dehumanization: each chapter delves into how dehumanization operates\, not just through violence but through the political and intellectual systems that enable it. The book’s unique interactive design allows readers to reshape images of victims into grotesque forms mirroring the mental mechanisms of dehumanization. With each page turn\, the victims’ humanity is restored\, making their suffering undeniable. \nThe Book of Genocides is an unsettling experience\, shot through with the emotional gravity of horrific events—not just historical memories but ongoing realities\, painful truths that shape our world and demand our action. \nDana Mashoian Walrath is a writer\, artist\, and anthropologist. Her award-winning works include Aliceheimer’s\, a graphic memoir about her mother’s dementia journey\, and Like Water on Stone\, a verse novel about the Armenian genocide. Her comics\, art\, essays\, and poetry have been featured by The Nation\, The Lancet\, Slate\, and NPR. Dana Mashoian Walrath lives in Vermont

SUMMARY:Movie: Foragers
DESCRIPTION:In her cinematic investigation into the Palestinian practice of foraging za’atar (a thyme-like herb) and ’akkoub (a wild artichoke-like plant)\, artist Jumana Manna reveals the perils involved in the preservation of Arab traditions under Israeli law. Her inventive blend of fiction\, documentary and archival footage in FORAGERS coalesces into a warm portrait of a community whose daily activities resist continued repression. \nBeginning with archival footage from a ‘70s Israeli TV program in which the popularity of za’atar among Arabs is being discussed\, the film shows an Israeli businessman boasting about his decision to start planting and selling za’atar\, transforming the herb from a public good typically foraged by Palestinians into an agricultural commodity that profits Israelis. (It is no coincidence the footage is from the same decade that saw a public ban on the collection of za’atar in Israel.) Manna’s film is clear about how business and politics are embroiled in the continued erasure of Palestinian culture to such effect that the “very simple act of going out and collecting wild weeds becomes about a much wider politics of land control and sovereignty.”
