Join us\,Rep. Ilhan Omar\, and many more guest speakers at our annual CAIR-WA banquet on Saturday\, October 10th at 6:00 pm at the Meydenbauer Center. \n  \nIlhan Omar is a powerhouse in Congress. Ilhan was born in Somalia and came to the U.S. as a young refugee. She has served in U.S. Congress since 2019. Ilhan is one of the first two Muslim women in the U.S. Congress\, and the first Somali American to serve in Congress. \nOn a daily basis\, Rep. Omar resists destructive policies that chip away at our rights and freedoms and fights to build a more inclusive and compassionate society\, one where our economy can flourish and all Americans can participate in the democratic process. \nIlhan Omar represents Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives\, which includes Minneapolis and surrounding areas. An experienced Twin Cities policy analyst\, organizer\, public speaker\, and advocate\, Rep. Omar was sworn into office in January 2019\, making her the first Somali-American member of Congress\, the first woman of color to represent Minnesota. \nDespite being a target of the Islamophobic Trump Administration\, Ilhan continues to stand firm against hate\, preaching love and justice over this antagonization and demonization of our communities. While in Cairo\, they would interview 29 Palestinian families who had recently left Gaza and collect the first-hand experiences of families that had faced – and survived – devastating degrees of fear and suffering. Committed to depicting these stories with unwavering focus and intent\, Hedges and Sacco seek to present a profound and detailed account of the displacement\, destruction\, and loss experienced by the people of Palestine. \nRequiem for Gaza pairs Sacco’s visceral imagery with Hedges’ deft prose to convey these accounts\, combining both comics and impactful single images within an unflinching narrative. Bolstered by thorough research and harrowing statistics\, Hedges and Sacco aim to cast a sharp light on what has been lost by these families and the people of Palestine\, reaching back to the first days of the genocide. Requiem for Gaza highlights the forced evacuations and constant displacement\, the false hopes of promised ceasefires and the struggles in seeking support from the rest of the world\, and the immense loss of life\, culture\, and community. \nBy bringing together the collective power of individual stories from all walks of life\, Hedges and Sacco strive to present a deeply human portrait of those who continue to live under this weight. Requiem for Gaza blends art and journalism to create a poignant tribute to not just the devastation experienced\, but the dignity and humanity they hold on to in the midst of it.

This event is held in the Microsoft Auditorium on Level 1 of SPL Central Branch. \nIn We\, Layli Long Soldier examines what it means to be in community\, to be in relation with family\, nation\, history\, and language. We is the first-person plural\, the pronoun of inclusion in English. It is also Wé\, the Lakota word meaning “blood”—what is shared and what is shed. \nIn this ingenious and insightful arrangement of poems\, lyric essays\, and her own visual artworks presented in full color\, Long Soldier creates unique spaces of collaboration\, mentorship\, and shared knowledge. The 184 X’s signed to a broken treaty\, the fringes of a winged dress braided in honor of children lost to Indian boarding schools\, and intricate Lakota star quilts become shapes and patterns that convey collective kinship\, memory\, and grievance. “From this day forward\,” Long Soldier writes\, “I declare a war of language.” \nWe is a visionary new collection by a writer and artist whose unfolding works are among the most groundbreaking of our time. \nLayli Long Soldier is a poet\, artist\, and citizen of the Oglala Lakota Nation. She is the author of WHEREAS\, a finalist for the 2017 National Book Award and winner of the 2018 PEN/Jean Stein Book Award and the 2018 National Book Critics Circle Award. Long Soldier has also received a 2016 Whiting Award\, a 2021 Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature\, the 2021 Michael Murphy Memorial Poetry Prize in the UK\, and the 2025 C.D. Wright Award for Poetry from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. In 2024\, she received an Emmy Award for her poetry in the documentary film Lakota Nation vs. United States. She teaches in the MFA Creative Writing Program at the Institute of American Indian Arts and resides in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. \nLena Khalaf Tuffaha is the author of three award-winning books of poetry\, Water & Salt (Red Hen\, 2017)\, Kaan and Her Sisters (Trio House\, 2023)\, and Something About Living (University of Akron\, 2024). Something About Living won the 2024 National Book Award\, an Arab American Book Award\, a Washington State Book Award\, and an American Library Association’s Notable Book. Tuffaha is also an essayist and translator. Her work has been published in journals including Michigan Quarterly Review\, Mizna\, the Nation\, Prairie Schooner\, and Poets.org. In 2022\, she was the curator of the poetry translation series Poetry from Palestine at the Baffler magazine. She won the John Fredrick Nims Memorial Prize for Translation from the Poetry Foundation for her translations of the late Zakaria Mohammed’s poems in that series.
