SUMMARY:Tinariwen at Benaroya Hall
DESCRIPTION:The powerful melodies of Tinariwen have become the soundtrack for a whole generation of exiled Touareg youth living in Algeria and Libya. Their latest album\, Elwan\, represents a powerful meeting of two disparate generations and celebrates the capacity of music to make beautiful art out of experiences as intense and cruel as exile.  These extraordinary guitar-poets from the southern Sahara desert blend blues\, rock and pop with Berber and Arabic influences to create an altogether hypnotic concert experience.

SUMMARY:Excavating Medieval Cairo: Its History and Finds
DESCRIPTION:Excavating Medieval Cairo: Its History and Finds \n  \nFustat\, part of modern Cairo\, was the site of the first Muslim settlement in Egypt beginning in the 640s.  The area to which the name Fustat was applied expanded to include the next two Muslim administrative centers and was the location of the majority of Cairo’s urban population while rulers were found in al-Qahira [The origins of the name Cairo (969-1171) and the citadel (to the mid-19th century).  Only in the 20th century did excavations in historic Fustat begin but then only on an irregular basis.  One of the most important excavators was the American and former ARCE director George Scanlon who established his international reputation based upon his work in Fustat.  In addition to tracing the story of the excavators and their work\, the talk will illustrate some of the findings including beads\, coins\, printed paper\, inscribed textiles called tiraz and other material. \nJere Bacharach\, Professor Emeritus\, Department of History\, UW\, first visited Fustat (Cairo) in 1964 and saw it most recently in 2018 with visits to the site and meetings with archaeologists during the intervening decades. He also edited Fustat Finds\, a volume of essays on finds from the site which were owned by a local Egyptian physician. \n\nUniversity of Washington – Thompson Hall rm 101 \nA Lecture by the American Research Center in Egypt – Northwest Chapter Co-sponsored by the UW Dept. of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization and the Middle East Center\, Henry M. SUMMARY:47 Soul at Nectar in Seattle
DESCRIPTION:47 Soul at Nectar in Seattle!\n47SOUL is an Electro Arabic Dabke (Shamstep) band formed in Amman Jordan in 2013. The members are rooted in Bilad Al-Sham\, spanning the divides from Amman to the Galilee to Ramallah and the rest of the Palestinian Diaspora. This new sound of 47SOUL has rapidly amassed fans in the Arab World and Europe by blasting the electric Arabic Dabke sound through underground music scenes. On top of the beats that have been bumping in the Arab World for centuries\, 47SOUL hypes it up with analog synthesizers\, hypnotic guitar lines\, and shattering verses from the four singers. Every show ends in relentless dance and trance from all parties involved. Their lyrics\, mixing Arabic and English\, call for celebration and freedom in the struggle for equality\, inside Bilad Al Sham and throughout the world. The current lineup of 2016 includes: Z the People (vocals & synths) El Far3i (darouka\, Mc/Vocals) Walaa Sbeit (percussion\, Mc/vocals) El Jehaz (guitar & vocals)

SUMMARY:ArabishWay Circle Time Series (2019-2020)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your little one down and join Laila for a circle time that will have songs\, stories and activities all in Arabic followed by snack and craft time. \nWe will meet once each month and each month will have a theme: (September: alphabet\, October: numbers\, etc.) and the books\, songs and activities will correlate with this theme. \nCircle time is great for non-native speakers who want to expose their child to another language as well as native speakers who want to expose their children to Arabic outside of the home.  It’s also been a great place for people to meet and get to know other families. \nWe will have the meeting room from 10am – 11:30am.  The circle time will run from 10:15am-10:45am followed by informal snack/craft which can be done in class or completed at home. \nRepeats monthly on the 2nd Thursday of the month. \nThis circle time is geared towards toddlers and early preschool but all ages are welcome and will enjoy the activities!

SUMMARY:Mary Ann Peters - Traveler at James Harris Gallery
DESCRIPTION:“I work from the premise that images are never neutral and that they sustain layered meaning from the inception of an idea to the completed piece. Historical narratives\, architecture\, science\, personal heritage\, politics and questions of perception have all played a part in my thinking over the years.  I look for seemingly disparate elements that can coalesce and redefine a topic.  I have traveled extensively\, most frequently in non-Western cultures. Traveling has informed my understanding of the global roots of aesthetics. It consistently defines for me those social practices that provide outlines for cultural inquiry\, including which ethical questions should be considered or supported. In the end I work to the afterimage of the viewer and the potential discourse that might ensue.  The kiss of death for any artist is the work that no one can remember.” \n– Mary Ann Peters \nMary Ann Peters lives and works in Seattle\, WA  She received an MFA from the University of Washington in 1978. She has received numerous awards including an Art Matters Foundaton Grant\, New York that allowed her to travel to Paris and Mexico City to research the migration from the Middle East after World War II\, a grant from The New Foundation\, Seattle in 2014\,  a MacDowell Fellowship in 2010\, a Jentel residency in 2009\, the Northwest Institute of Architecture & Urban Studies in Italy (NIAUSI) residency in 2003 and the Neddy Fellowship from the Behnke Foundation in 2000. Collections include Microsoft\, Seattle Art Museum\, 4Culture\, Tacoma Art Museum\, and others.
