SUMMARY:Egyptian Rule and Canaanite Resistance as Seen from Jaffa: ARCE Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The excavations of the Egyptian New Kingdom fortress in Jaffa\, on the southern side of Tel Aviv were undertaken from 1956 to 2014. It was the only Egyptian fortress excavated in Canaan. Its archaeological record\, particularly the evidence from several dramatic destructions\, provides a unique perspective on Egyptian rule and local resistance to it from ca. 1460 to 1125 B.C. The archaeological evidence\, taken together with textual sources\, yields a picture of Canaanite resistance to the Egyptian military presence in Jaffa. This originated in centers located throughout the coastal plain and persisted for several centuries. This talk is drawn from excavations directed by the author and undertaken by the Jaffa Cultural Heritage Project between 2011 and 2014. Dr. Aaron Burke is the Kershaw Chair of Ancient Eastern Mediterranean Studies at UCLA.

SUMMARY:To Palestine With Love - The poetry and art of Najwa Kawar Farah
DESCRIPTION:A reading  of poems and a review of artwork by Palestinian writer\, poet\, and artist Najwa Kawar Farah\, followed by audience discussion \nNajwa Kawar Farah is a Palestinian writer who has contributed to Palestinian and Arabicliterature for several decades. The bulk of her publications are short stories\, novels and poems. Najwa was born in Nazareth and lived in Haifa until 1965\, and then in two West Bank cities\, Jerusalem and Ramallah. Najwa also lived in Lebanon\, the UK and Canada. She passed away in Canada in 2015. \nNajwa’s life experiences in Palestine and the Middle East\, provided her with the political\, historical\, and socio-cultural milieu from which she drew and developed her characters. \nMost of her protagonists are Palestinians\, mainly ’ordinary’ people especially refugees uprooted from their homes and homeland\, who seek answers to their individual and collective historical predicament. Many of these protagonists are resilient women\, who in addition to their political oppression encounter social discrimination. Her stories and novels come in eleven collections in Arabic. A number of these have been translated into English. \nAbout the Readers/Moderators \nZeina Azzam is a Palestinian American poet\, writer\, editor\, and community activist. Currently she works as publications editor at the think tank\, Arab Center Washington DC. Her chapbook\, Bayna Bayna\, In-Between\, will be published by The Poetry Box in 2021. Zeina’s poems appear/will appear in Pleiades\, Passager\, Sukoon Magazine\, Mizna\, Cordite Poetry Review\, Beltway Poetry Quarterly\, Barzakh: A Literary Magazine\, Infinite Rust\, Heartwood Literary Magazine\, Lunch Ticket\, The Fourth River\, Split This Rock\, Voice Male\, and the edited volumes Tales from Six Feet Apart (2021)\,Bettering American Poetry (2019)\, Making Mirrors: Writing/Righting by and for Refugees (2019)\, The Poeming Pigeon (2017)\, Write Like You’re Alive 2017\, Gaza Unsilenced (2015)\, and Yellow as Turmeric\, Fragrant as Cloves (2008). She volunteers for organizations that promote Palestinian rights and the civil rights of vulnerable communities in Alexandria\, Virginia\, where she lives\, and is a mentor for We Are Not Numbers\, a writing program for youth in Gaza. Zeina holds an M.A. in Arabic literature from Georgetown University\, an M.A. in sociology from George Mason University\, and a B.A. in psychology from Vassar College. \nSahar Mustafah \nSahar Mustafah is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants\, an inheritance she explores in her fiction. Her first novel The Beauty of Your Face (W.W. Norton\, 2020) was named a 2020 Notable Book and Editor’s Choice by New York Times Book Review\, a Los Angeles Times United We Read selection\, one of Marie Claire Magazine’s 2020 Best Fiction by Women\, and a Great Group Reads for National Reading Group Month. It was long-listed for the Center for Fiction 2020 First Novel Prize\, and was a finalist for Chicago Writers Association Best Book of the Year award and the Chicago Review of Books award. Her short story collection Code of the West was the winner of the 2016 Willow Books Fiction Award. Her stories have earned a Distinguished Story citation from Best American Short Stories 2016\, First Place in Fiction from the Guild Literary Complex of Chicago\, and three Pushcart Prize nominations\, among other honors. Mustafah earned her MFA from Columbia College Chicago where she was the recipient of the David Friedman Award for Best Fiction. She writes and teaches outside of Chicago.

Guided by Wafa Ghnaim\, who began her training in embroidery with her mother at age 2\, learn the basic Palestinian cross-stitch and how to create a tatreez sampler\, using a standard size sheet of Aida cloth fabric and one that can incorporate numerous patterns and eventually become a wall-hanging. \nIf you have already begun a tatreez sampler\, this workshop will teach you traditional patterns and stitching strategies to further develop your piece. You are not required to take all three workshops in this winter series (Jan. 29; Feb. 26; and March 12)—you may take one\, or all. The purpose of the sampler series is to develop your stitching skills\, introduce you to new patterns throughout the region’s history\, as well as learn more about textiles produced in the Holy Land throughout the centuries. \nOpen to students of all skill levels\, learn the history and meaning behind traditional Palestinian patterns\, basics of transferring a pattern to fabric\, threading a needle\, various cross-stitching methodologies\, how to keep the back of your cloth clean\, color theory and design\, project planning\, and motif repetition. This book explores how the concept of settler colonialism provides a clearer understanding of the Zionist movement’s project to establish a Jewish state in Palestine\, displacing the Palestinian Arab population and marginalizing its cultural presence.EVENT DETAILS\nJeff Halper argues that the only way out of a colonial situation is decolonization: the dismantling of Zionist structures of domination and control and their replacement by a single democratic state\, in which Palestinians and Israeli Jews forge a new civil society and a shared political community. \nTo show how this can be done\, Halper uses the 10-point program of the One Democratic State Campaign as a guide for thinking through the process of decolonization to its post-colonial conclusion. Halper’s unflinching reframing will empower activists fighting for the rights of the Palestinians and democracy for all. \nJeff Halper is the head of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) and a founding member of the One Democratic State Campaign. DESCRIPTION:SYNOPSIS \nMartin Luther King in Palestine follows an African American gospel group led by Stanford professor and King scholar Clay Carson who travel to Palestine in March of 2011 to perform an original play about MLK written by Carson. While there\, the small choir of political neophytes quickly discover the repressive conditions Palestinians endure daily under the Occupation\, and empathy develops between peoples who have a shared history of oppression.An elderly Palestinian refugee couple in a final standoff with the israeli authorities to maintain their lifestyle in Roshmia; the last natural valley in Haifa. Yousef and his wife Amna\,who originally descents from the Gypsies of Palestine\, have lived in a shack all alone in their eighties since 1956 in what seems to be a life of serenity; far away from the loudness of modern life. Life remains peaceful in Roshmia until the israeli authorities endorse a new road project and order to confiscate their land\, demolish the shack and throw them out. A friend of the couple tries to secure a compensation from the municipality but the shack is Yousef’s home that he insists on keeping; living in bliss and comfort as ever\, however the negotiations continue and tension grows among the three. Furthermore\, and besides the physical displacement and despair they are nearly facing\, Yousef and Amna are about to go on separate ways.

In this class NADIA TOMMALIEH will teach you about her family’s favorite sawani: Kofta! You’ll learn how to mix and form kofta for kofta bil bandora (baked lamb and beef patties with potatoes and tomato sauce) with ruz bil she’iryeh (vermicelli rice). We will finish with muhalabia bil bortokal (layered milk and orange pudding) for dessert. \nThis is a live\, hands-on cooking class held in your kitchen via Zoom. Class is meant to be as interactive as it would be at our table\, with the instructor teaching you how to prepare each recipe. Each class ticket is for one kitchen\, and we welcome group cooking on the same screen. Troutt Powell\, & Annissa Malvoisin \nInfo about the lecture: \nDespite ideals of scientific and scholarly objectivity\, both Egyptologists and non-specialists have often projected their own racial anxieties back into ancient Egypt. Recurrent attempts to prove that the ancient Egyptians were white or Black\, for example\, reveal more about modern societies than about ancient Egypt. The panel will discuss the history of how such debates have played out among modern Western and Egyptian scholars\, artists\, and writers\, and how interpretations of ancient Egypt are intertwined with personal beliefs and prejudices. \n  \nTo prepare for the program\, audience members should listen to this lecture HERE\, given at Harvard in 2017 in advance.

DESCRIPTION:This event is free but does require registration. \nTo register for this event please click here. \nTo view the film trailer please click here. \nThe screening of the film will be followed by discussions with the audience. \nAbout the Film \nAfter returning from a trip to the Middle East in 1950\, Dorothy Thompson\, a civil rights advocate and journalist\, introduces this film and emphasizes the need for providing immediate relief to suffering Palestinian refugees to avoid starvation and “ugly political consequences.” The film was produced by a charitable organization called the Council for Relief of Palestinian Arab Refugees. It is believed to be the first documentary film to highlight the plight of Palestinians in the aftermath of the 1948 Nakba. It was mainly intended to encourage Americans to donate for the relief effort. Black and white film\, directed by Theodore A. Morde and narrated by John S. Martin. Runtime is 28 minutes.
