SUMMARY:Movie: Hurdle: Online viewing plus ZOOM discussion
DESCRIPTION:COPING WITH OCCUPATION\nAfter the opening reception and screening on February 28\, the remainder of the film series originally planned for Spring 2020 has been cancelled. We hope to share those films at some point in the future. However\, the Mideast Focus Film Series has been reimagined for this pandemic season\, with films shown screening online\, and online Q&A sessions with filmmakers via Zoom.\nCheck back on their webpage for links and instructions for viewing the films online and participating in the discussions which follow. \nMOVIE:  HURDLE\n\n\nIn the shadow of a wall stands a new generation of Palestinian. With defiant creativity they prove that no matter the height of the obstacle\, one can always climb.Hurdle reveals an important and intimate story emerging from the hearts and actions of Palestinian youth as the Israeli military occupation of the Palestinian territories reached its 50th year. This new generation responds to a world of walls\, checkpoints and arrests in an unexpected and inspiring way. Hurdle ’s protagonists\, Sami and Mohammad\, begin teaching the creative practices of parkour and photography\, respectively\, to the youth of their communities as a means to overcome the personal and political obstacles that often feel inescapable. Though these young men are separated by a wall\, they are united in leading the next generation toward freedom and self-determination through creative practices. \nWith breathtaking visuals\, amazing access and action-packed scenes\, Hurdle provides an opportunity for a diverse audience to connect on a human level with a community that is underrepresented in the mainstream narrative. Hurdle not only documents the evolution of an age-old conflict\, but stands as a harbinger as the global conversation focuses on wall-building and dehumanizing “the other.” \nWatch the film online any time between now and Friday evening by visiting this page and entering the password shown below:\n\nhttps://vimeo.com/410052533\n\nPassword: StMarksHurdle\n\nThen\, on Friday 4/24 at 8:30pm\, join us for a live Q&A with filmmaker Michael Rowley via Zoom at:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86396230603?pwd=QVN1aG9kYXV4REJOS3NVNVJ3RFJYZz09\n\nIf you are asked for a password\, please enter: mefm-2020\n\nPlease note: If you choose to watch the film right before the discussion\, please start the film by 6:45pm\, so that you have time to join our Zoom at 8:30.\n\nFor more info about the film\, visit the event page on Facebook:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/218419129422752/\n\nDonations are welcome.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Jim Al-Khalili The World According to Physics
DESCRIPTION:Honesty and doubt are among the core values of physics—the human quest for ever more foundational principles that accurately explain the natural world we see around us. To shed light on some of the most profound insights revealed by modern physics\, scientific communicator Jim Al-Khalili joins us with observations from his book The World According to Physics. Al-Khalili helps us understand what this crucially important science tells us about the universe and the nature of reality itself by walking us through the core concepts of space\, time\, energy\, and matter. He offers an accessible look at the three pillars of modern physics—quantum theory\, relativity\, and thermodynamics—showing how all three must come together if we are ever to have a full understanding of reality. \nUsing poignant examples and thought-provoking analogies\, Al-Khalili illuminates the physics of the extreme cosmic and quantum scales\, the speculative frontiers of the field\, and the physics that underpins our everyday experiences and technologies. Share in the profound adventure of seeking truth in the world around us as Al-Khalili brings us up to speed with the biggest ideas in this fundamental field of science. \nJim Al-Khalili is professor of physics at the University of Surrey. He is one of Britain’s best-known science communicators and has written numerous books\, including Quantum: A Guide for the Perplexed; The House of Wisdom: How Arabic Science Saved Ancient Knowledge and Gave Us the Renaissance; and Life on the Edge: The Coming of Age of Quantum Biology.rum
