DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed. \nThe second in a two-part series featuring films created in Gaza by Seattle filmmaker Jen Marlowe \n  \nJen Marlowe Biography:\nJen Marlowe is a Seattle-based award-winning author/documentary filmmaker/playwright and human rights activist. \nIn 2004\, with colleagues Adam Shapiro and Aisha Bain\, Jen traveled to Northern Darfur and Eastern Chad to make the award-winning documentary film Darfur Diaries: Message from Home and wrote the accompanying book Darfur Diaries: Stories of Survival (Nation Books\, 2006). Darfur Diaries was included in the 2007 edition of the Best American Non-Required Reading\, edited by Dave Eggers. Jen’s second feature-length award-winning documentary is called Rebuilding Hope: Sudan’s Lost Boys Return Home. Rebuilding Hope follows three Sudanese-American young men on their first homecoming trip back to Sudan\, to discover whether their homes and families survived the civil war and to build a school\, drill wells and bring medical supplies to their villages in Sudan. Jen’s second book\, called The Hour of Sunlight: One Palestinian’s Journey from Prisoner to Peacemaker (Nation Books\, 2011)\, is co-authored with and tells the story of Sami Al Jundi\, a Palestinian man who spent ten years in Israeli prison for being involved in militant anti-occupation activities as a youth and who has spent the last two decades of his life working towards nonviolence and peaceful reconciliation between Israelis and Palestinians.The Hour of Sunlight was the winner of the London-based Middle East Monitor’s Palestine Book Award in 2012. Jen is also the playwright of There is a Field. The play\, which addresses issues faced by Palestinian citizens of Israel\, launched globally in October 2010\, marking the ten-year anniversary of Black October. Jen’s third award-winning documentary film\, One Family in Gaza profiles one family’s experience during and after the 2009 assault on the Gaza Strip. Jen’s most recent book is I Am Troy Davis (Haymarket Books\, 2013)\, written with Martina Davis-Correia\, the sister of innocent death row prisoner Troy Davis whose execution in 2011 stirred world-wide protest and condemnation due to his strong case of innocence. \nJen’s articles about Palestine/Israel\, Sudan\, Bahrain and the death penalty can be found at The Nation\, Progressive\, Worldfocus.org\, Tomdispatch.com\, Yes!\, Colorlines and Massachusetts Review. The original texts are from Haneen Abdalnabi\, Ali Abusheikh\, Aziz Abuzayed\, Issam Adwan\, Ramzy Baroud\, Basman Derawi\, Iman Hamed\, Mazin Qumsiyah\, Raed Shakshak\, and Noor Yacoubi. Several passages are drawn from stories at We Are Not Numbers\, a website project gathering stories and writings from youth in Gaza. \nLocal author Ramzy Baroud\, who grew up in Gaza\, is one of the original writers and will join the performance for post-play comments and discussion about the current and ongoing situation for Palestinians. \nThe short play and discussion will last about one hour total. DESCRIPTION:Bring your little one down and join Laila for a circle time that will have songs\, stories and activities all in Arabic followed by snack and craft time. \nWe will meet once each month and each month will have a theme: (September: alphabet\, October: numbers\, etc.) and the books\, songs and activities will correlate with this theme. \nCircle time is great for non-native speakers who want to expose their child to another language as well as native speakers who want to expose their children to Arabic outside of the home.  It’s also been a great place for people to meet and get to know other families. \nWe will have the meeting room from 10am – 11:30am.  The circle time will run from 10:30am-11:00am followed by informal snack/craft which can be done in class or completed at home. \nRepeats monthly on the 2nd Thursday of the month until February then March through June will be the 1st Thursday of the month. \nThis circle time is geared towards toddlers and early preschool but all ages are welcome and will enjoy the activities!

DESCRIPTION:This event has been postponed. \nMellon Sawyer Seminar – Humanitarianisms: Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh – Shifting the Gaze: Southern-led Humanitarian Responses to Displacement\nWith displacement primarily being a ‘Southern’ and ‘South-South’ phenomenon and dynamic\, it is equally the case that diverse Southern actors have historically responded to displacement\, including in ways that resist\, reject and provide alternatives to the hegemonic aid regime. However\, in spite of the existence of historical and contemporary examples from across the global South\, Southern-led responses to displacement have typically been rendered invisible\, and largely un-acknowledged by Northern- and Northern-based academics\, policy-makers and practitioners\, with sustained academic engagement only arising relatively recently. In turn\, when Southern actors’ responses to displacement have been analyzed—including through studies into the activities of Islamic faith-based organizations and of ‘non-traditional’ donor states which are not members of the OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC)\, such as Saudi Arabia\, Qatar\, UAE and Kuwait—Northern academics and policy observers have often delegitimized such responses. With this in mind\, and with a particular focus on responses to displacement from Syria since 2011\, in this lecture I develop a multiscalar analysis of the roles played by Southern states\, local host communities\, faith-based networks and refugees themselves\, including through what I refer to as ‘refugee-refugee humanitarianism’. In all\, I argue that it is essential to critically examine Southern-led responses to displacement\, including through a focus on refugee-refugee relations\, as a means of challenging a paradigm that is both dominant and exclusionary in the field of refugee studies and refugee response. \nProf. Elena Fiddian-Qasmiyeh is Professor of Migration and Refugee Studies and Co-Director of the Migration Research Unit at University College London (UCL)\, where she is also the Director of the Refuge in a Moving World interdisciplinary research network. She is currently the Principal Investigator of a number of research projects\, including Analysing South-South Humanitarian Responses to Displacement from Syria: Views from Lebanon\, Jordan and Turkey (funded by the European Research Council)\, and a Local Community Experiences of and Responses to Displacement from Syria (funded by the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council). Elena has conducted extensive research in refugee camps and urban ‘host’ areas including in Algeria\, Cuba\, Egypt\, France\, Jordan\, Lebanon\, South Africa\, Syria\, Sweden\, and the UK. Drawing on a critical theoretical perspective\, her work contributes to key debates surrounding refugees’ and local host community members’ responses to conflict-induced displacement in the Global South; the nature of refugee-host-donor relations\, and refugee-refugee relationality; and Southern-led humanitarian responses to forced migration. Her recent publications include The Ideal Refugees: Gender\, Islam and the Sahrawi Politics of Survival (Syracuse University Press\, 2014)\,  South-South Educational Migration\, Humanitarianism and Development: Views from the Caribbean\, North Africa and the Middle East (Routledge\, 2015)\, The Oxford Handbook of Refugee and Forced Migration Studies (co-editor\, Oxford University Press\, 2014)\, and Refuge in a Moving World: Tracing Refugee and Migrant Journeys Across Disciplines (UCL Press\, 2020). And many thanks to Dilara Elbir for her design. \nArtist Bios:\nNaomi Shihab Nye describes herself as a “wandering poet.” She has spent 40 years traveling the country and the world to lead writing workshops and inspiring students of all ages. Nye was born to a Palestinian father and an American mother and grew up in St. Louis\, Jerusalem\, and San Antonio. Drawing on her Palestinian-American heritage\, the cultural diversity of her home in Texas\, and her experiences traveling in Asia\, Europe\, Canada\, Mexico\, and the Middle East\, Nye uses her writing to attest to our shared humanity. Naomi Shihab Nye is the author and/or editor of more than 30 volumes. Her most recent book is Voices in the Air: Poems for Listeners. Her new book of poems is entitled The Tiny Journalist (BOA Editions Ltd.\, April 2019). \nLena Khalaf Tuffaha is a poet\, essayist\, and translator. She earned a BA in Comparative Literature at the University of Washington and an MFA in Poetry at the Rainier Writing Workshop of Pacific Lutheran University She is the author of the full-length poetry collection\, Water & Salt\, winner of the 2018 Washington State Book Award for Poetry\, and the chapbooks Arab in Newsland (2016) and Letters from the Interior (2019). Her work has been published in journals including Blackbird\, Kenyon Review Online\, Michigan Quarterly Review\, New England Review\, Poetry Northwest\, TriQuarterly\, and the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-A-Day feature. Her poems have been widely anthologized and have received the Robert Watson Literary Prize and multiple Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net nominations. She is the recipient of a 2019 Artist Trust Fellowship\, and has served as the inaugural Poet-In-Residence at Open Books: A Poem Emporium in Seattle. She describes her work as “an intentional study on healing and identity.” Suhad is also a public speaker on the subject of Palestine\, theology\, feminism and community organizing. Her practice extends to design and filmmaking.
