SUMMARY:Queen Naija: The Butterfly Tour (Portland)
DESCRIPTION:With the recent arrival of her debut album missunderstood\, Atlanta-based singer/songwriter Queen Naija has cemented her status as one of R&B’s most compelling young stars. Hailed as “the first soul star of the social media generation” by The New York Times\, the 25-year-old Detroit native has amassed over three billion combined global streams to date\, each song showcasing the powerful vocal skills she first developed by singing in church. Although she initially found fame through a YouTube channel launched with her former husband\, Queen struck out on her own with her breakthrough single “Medicine”: a January 2018 release that debuted at No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 (a nearly-unheard-of achievement for an unsigned artist)\, and quickly landed her a deal with Capitol Records. By summer 2018\, she’d delivered a critically acclaimed self-titled EP\, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart and earned major recognition in the 2019 awards season (including nominations for Top R&B Artist at the Billboard Music Awards and Best New Artist at the BET Awards\, in addition to three nods at the iHeartRadio Music Awards).

SUMMARY:The Almond Blossom Knows Its Life Is Short: Poetry of Palestinian Women in Translation
DESCRIPTION:Description: In this class we will explore a selection of translated poetry by Palestinian women. How do these poets tend to loss? How do they engage with their interiors while living in varying states of siege\, occupation\, or exile? What are their obsessions? Which mythologies do they reject and which others do they remake? Together we’ll read across generations\, including poems by Maya Abu Al-Hayyat\, Asmaa’ Azaizeh\, Ahlam Bisharat\, Laila Al-Sa’ih\, and Fadwa Touqan. Join us to reflect together on theme and structure; to encounter texts in the original Arabic alongside the translations; and to end with a writing prompt inspired by our exploration. \nFormat: Online via Zoom

SUMMARY:Free virtual screening of "Trip Along Exodus\," a film directed by Hind Shoufani
DESCRIPTION:The film/poem recreates the last 70 years of Palestinian and Arab politics seen through the prism of the life of the filmmaker’s father\, Dr. Elias Shoufani\, a leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organization\, an academic and leftist intellectual who was one of the leaders of the opposition to Arafat within Fatah for 20 years. The film language uses archive\, poetry\, family photos/8mm films\, glitter\, cartoons\, animation\, macro-photography\, interviews\, and other multimedia formats in a video-art amalgam—a personal and political memoir.

SUMMARY:The Nakba and its Generational Impact on Palestinian lives: Memory\, Identity\, and a Future rooted in Justice
DESCRIPTION:The Foundation for Middle East Peace & Project48 invite you to join \nThe Nakba and its Generational Impact on Palestinian lives: Memory\, Identity\, and a Future rooted in Justice \nFriday\, November 19th\, 2021 \n10:30am – 11:45am ET \nFeaturing Palestinians who lived through the 1948 Nakba and their descendants: \nNida El-Muti\, Dina El-Muti\, and Hasan Hammami \nIn conversation with Peter Beinart (FMEP Non-resident fellow) \nRSVP here \nThe Nakba\, the displacement of over 750\,000 Palestinians from their homeland from 1947-49\, is among the root causes of the conflict in Palestine-Israel and critical to understanding the failure of the decades-long “peace-process\,” and the level of justice and reparations required to achieve a sustainable future. We will hear the personal stories of those who survived the ethnic cleansing of their cities and villages\, and learn from them and their descendants how the trauma of the Nakba and Israel’s ongoing policies of erasure have shaped their lives. We’ll also ask about their visions for the future\, what justice looks like\, and how they sustain connections to their homeland from the diaspora. \nParticipants: \nNida El-Muti: Born in Jericho to Fatima Radwan\, a survivor of the 1948 Deir Yassin massacre\, Nida was raised in Ramallah and at sixteen immigrated to New Jersey with her mother. Nida put herself through school at Rutgers University\, earned a masters in human physiology and worked at Robert Wood Johnson in the department of microbiology\, and at Rutgers medical school as a senior technologist in the IVF program. For fifteen years\, Nida taught anatomy and physiology at  Eastern Illinois university. She is currently retired and living in Chicago. \nDina El-Muti: Born in Denton\, TX\, Dina grew up in a small town in East Central Illinois\, and is now a recent transplant back to Texas\, specifically\, Houston. The granddaughter of Fatima Radwan\, who lived through the 1948 Nakba\, Dina is the mother of two little boys and a trauma clinician who has worked for organizations including Defence for Children International\, Palestine (DCI-P)\, the Treatment & Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture (TRC)\, and various social service organizations serving children who have experienced early childhood trauma. Dina attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for undergrad and earned a masters in social work at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dina grew up on the hyphen: both Palestinian and American\, on a steady diet of Edward Said\, Malcolm X\, and her grandmother Fatima’s timeless stories that fundamentally changed the trajectory of her life and work. \nHasan Hammami: Born in Jaffa\, Palestine in 1932\, Hasan was educated at the Christian Brothers College in Jaffa until he was forced to flee on a cargo sailboat at age 15\, with 3000 people\, during the Nakba. At 18\, after 3 years at the National College of Choueifat and the American University of Beirut\, Hasan had to abandon his education to help support his family by working for the oil company Aramco in Saudi Arabia\, where he lived in a desert labor camp. He completed his engineering education at the University of Nottingham\, England and joined Procter and Gamble where he launched manufacturing operations in Iraq and Saudi Arabia\, and with increasing responsibilities led large projects in several parts of the world. Father to three daughters and a step-son living on 4 continents\, Hasan has served organizations such as the Arab American Association and the Palestine Human Rights Campaign\, among others\, focusing on civil and human rights for all\, advancement of Arab Americans and Interfaith work. A US citizen for 37 years\, a citizen of the world for nearly 70\, and with 25 country moves behind him\, Hasan\, now 89\, continues to grow & share as a retiree in Florida. \nPeter Beinart is Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. He is also a Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the City University of New York\, a Contributing opinion writer at the New York Times\, an Editor-at-Large at Jewish Currents\, and a CNN Political Commentator. He tweets @PeterBeinart and publishes on peterbeinart.substack.com

SUMMARY:Arab Film Festival 2021
DESCRIPTION:We are putting the finishing touches to AFF2021’s schedule and can’t wait to share it! In the meantime\, here’s a little preview of what’s coming: \n\nA selection of shorts from Iraq and Lebanon\nOur annual Queer Lens\nAward winning features including Moss Agate\, Our River…Our Sky\, and 200 Meters\nA spotlight on documentaries directed by women\nand more!\n\nMoss Agate (Lebanon\, 2021)\nBeirut\, summer 2019.  The filmmaker experiences a descent into the abyss. His health is at stake and his film community is falling apart.  His actress friend Tamara is the last one to leave… \nOur River…Our Sky (Iraq\, 2020)\nIn a typically mixed Baghdadi neighborhood in 2006\, a community of ordinary people try to live their everyday lives amidst the threat of unpredictable violence. At the heart of these intersecting stories we find Sara\, a single mother and novelist. With the news of Saddam Hussein’s sudden execution shortly before the New Year\, Sara and her neighbors brace themselves for an uncertain future. Yet\, like a miracle\, each is able to sustain a fragile sense of hope. \n200 Meters (Palestine\, 2020)\nMustafa and his wife Salwa live 200 meters apart in villages separated by the Israeli border wall. One day he gets a call every parent dreads: his son has been injured in an accident. Rushing to cross the Israeli checkpoint\, Mustafa is denied on a technicality. But a father’s love won’t give up and he will do anything to reach his son. A 200 meter distance becomes a 200 kilometer odyssey\, as Mustafa\, left with no choice\, attempts to smuggle himself to the other side of the wall.

SUMMARY:Unlearn to Relearn: Shifting Attitudes for Arabs with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Nadwa (Public Conversation)\n  November 16\, 2021\n\n\nVirtual via Zoom \n\n\n\nDisability? Disabled? Special Needs? What language and framework do/should we use in the Arab Community? Join us for a discussion on disability in the Arab/American community! \nHistorically and traditionally\, people with disabilities across the globe have been systematically excluded and marginalized from all aspects of society. Although perspectives and attitudes about disability have changed in recent decades\, people with disabilities of color continue to face systemic and cultural barriers that deprive this community of accessing quality education and resources that will enable them to become valued members of society. In particular\, people with disabilities among Arab communities\, by large\, continue to face persistent and blatant oppression and barriers from living quality and humane lives. This webinar is the first of its kind. We will explicitly address long-term disability issues that have impacted Arab communities in the United States and the Middle East. The webinar aims to ignite new ways of thinking about disability and how all of us—both disabled and non-disabled alike—can begin to create a better society that promotes the basic principles of independence\, respect and dignity for Arabs with physical\, intellectual\, and mental health disabilities. \nFacilitators: \n\nAdnan Alaboudi\, International Disability Self Advocate\, Jordan\nMarina Salman\, Access Living Chicago\nRanda Abdelrahim\, PhD Candidate Disability Studies\, UIC\n\nReal-time live captioning will be provided. For questions\, additional information\, and/or accessibility contact us at arabamcc@uic.edu \nEvent is co-organized by the Arab American Cultural Center and the Disability Cultural Center \nSpeaker bios: \nAdnan Alaboudi is a person with disabilities (dual bottom amputation above and under the knee). Adnan is the Executive Director of the Landmines Survivors Network from 1999-2008 and a member of the Committee for Drafting of the International Convention on Human Rights with Disability in the United Nations. He is an activist and coach in the field of persons with disabilities and a professional sport in power games\, table tennis\, swimming and water skiing\, and participating in global\, Olympic\, and Arab sports. Adnan is the coordinator of awareness and promotion programs in the Supreme Council for People with Disabilities in Jordan 2009 – 2017. \nMarina Salman serves as the SOAR case manager for the Colbert Transition Program at Access Living Chicago where she helps individuals living in long-term care facilities reintegrate back into their communities after their recovery. She is also involved in numerous advocacy efforts that focus on the intersectionality of race and disability\, which includes healthcare and criminal justice reform. Marina completed her Master’s in Counseling Psychology with a focus in Sport and Health Psychology from Adler University in Chicago. She is an Arab American woman with multiple disabilities who looks to empower Arabs with disabilities to live meaningful lives through the power of education and experience. \nRanda Abdelrahim is a visiting research specialist at the department of disability and human development\, University of Illinois Chicago and a PhD candidate of disability studies. As an Arab American immigrant\, Randa is interested in examining contextual factors of disability across immigrants and minority groups. Her research focuses on how multiple personal and social factors such as gender\, culture\, race\, and income contribute to disparities in accessing health care and disability services for people with disabilities and their caregivers. Her advocacy work includes supporting people with disabilities with a focus on those who identify as Arab. She is currently a member of the Disability and Immigration Taskforce of Illinois.

SUMMARY:Online Art Exhibition: Site Insight
DESCRIPTION:November 13\, 2021—January 8\, 2022 | Online Exhibition \nJames Harris Gallery is pleased to present “Site Insight” an exhibition that explores how artists use and interpret site as a position or location especially as to its environment. This show considers how some artists interpret site in a more literal term while others use it allegorically. The disparate works act like instruments in an orchestra pit. Individually\, they are decisive works but taken in unison they reveal the emotional power works of art can have on a broad range of subjects and human character. Beauty is seen through ugliness and vice versa. All the works enlighten the viewer to the complexity of the world in which we live. The artists included in the show are: Squeak Carnwath\, Claire Cowie\, Fay Jones\, Julie Mehretu\, Jeffry Mitchell\, Mary Ann Peters\, Luke Kempton Williams\, Bing Wright\, and Amir Zaki.

SUMMARY:Donkeysaddle Projects Presents: The Vignette Collective's Workshop Reading
DESCRIPTION:As we continue to bear witness to the attacks on Palestinian lives\, we understand how present the voices of our artists are and need to be. And we want to share it with you.  \n  \nThat’s why we’re inviting you to join us on November 12th at 8pm ET for our 2nd virtual fundraiser featuring the work-in-progress from the Vignettes Collective. Get another sneak peek of our creative\, collaborative process with our collective of artists\, activists\, and organizers\, while raising funds to support Palestinians in urgent need in Gaza.
