SUMMARY:Mediterranean Mezze at the Pantry
DESCRIPTION:Mezze (small plates) pop up all across the Mediterranean\, and they extend beyond the standard hummus and tabbouleh served at most restaurants. In this class\, Nadia Tommalieh will show you how to transform local ingredients into mezze that can be served as appetizers or as the centerpiece of a Mediterranean-style feast. You’ll learn how to layer flavors in musakhan (chicken with caramelized onions and sumac)\, accompanied by salatet betinjan (roasted eggplant\, tomatoes\, and pomegranate molasses)\, labneh bil joz (strained yogurt with walnuts and parsley)\, and soak up any last sauce with homemade koubez saj (flatbread). \nThis is a live\, hands-on cooking class held in your kitchen via Zoom. Class is meant to be as interactive as it would be at our table\, with the instructor teaching you how to prepare each recipe. Each class ticket is for one kitchen\, and we welcome group cooking on the same screen. All recipes are designed for four servings. \nTwo days before class we will email everyone the detailed recipe packet and a Zoom link. All classes are listed in Pacific Standard Time. \nPlease click here for the list of ingredients and equipment that you will need for class. \nDon’t feel like shopping? Let us do it for you! If you would like to pick up a pre-measured ingredients kit for this class\, please add both the class and the kit to your shopping cart. Please be sure that you select the same date for your ingredient kit and class! Your ingredient kit can be picked up in our garden between 10am-6pm the day before class.

SUMMARY:Virtual Book Club: Me and White Supremacy
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Book Club: Me and White Supremacy\n\nSession 1: 6:30 p.m. EDT Thursday\, July 23\, 2020\nSession 2: 6:30 p.m. EDT Thursday\, August 6\, 2020\nFree on Zoom\nSIGN-UP REQUIRED \nThe next phase of AANM’s Virtual Book Club will bring community together for timely and crucial discussions about white supremacy and racism within each of ourselves and within the Arab American community*. AANM Artists-in-Residence Kamelya Omayma Youssef and Mariam Bazeed will help guide participants through exercises from the book\, Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad\, and engage in dialogue.  \n*All are encouraged to take part in this work\, but for this program we especially welcome Arab Americans who are new to these conversations\, including youth ages 15+ and their parents\, grandparents\, and other trusted friends\, family and community members.  \nDialogues will take place in two sessions on Zoom\, on Thursday\, July 23\, and Thursday\, Aug. 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. EDT. In order to allow for productive discussion and full engagement\, space is limited. \nSIGN UP TO PARTICIPATE \nJOIN OUR FACEBOOK GROUP \nPlease note that the discussion and group entry is free\, but books are for sale. Due to high demand\, please be sure to order your book as soon as possible.  \n\n\n\nWe encourage readers to purchase books from their local Black-owned bookstores. Find a Black-owned bookstore near you   \nFor other ways to purchase\, including e-books and audiobooks\, visit www.meandwhitesupremacybook.com \n\n\n\n\n  \nABOUT THE BOOK\nWhen Layla Saad ran a free month-long Instagram challenge during the summer of 2018\, she had no idea it would become an international cultural movement. Thousands of people from around the world were galvanized by the #meandwhitesupremacy challenge\, examining and owning responsibility for the ways in which they uphold white supremacy. Over 80\,000 people downloaded her guide to the movement\, Me and White Supremacy Workbook in the space of just six months. And now\, that guide is a published book. Me and White Supremacy leads readers through a journey of understanding their white privilege and participation in white supremacy\, so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on Black\, Indigenous and people of color\, and in turn\, help other white people do better\, too. The book goes beyond the original workbook by adding more historical and cultural contexts\, sharing moving stories and anecdotes\, and includes expanded definitions\, examples\, and further resources.  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nLayla Saad is a globally respected writer\, speaker and podcast host on the topics of race\, identity\, leadership\, personal transformation and social change. As an East African\, Arab\, British\, Black\, Muslim woman who was born and grew up in the West\, and lives in Middle East\, she has always sat at a unique intersection of identities from which she is able to draw rich and intriguing perspectives. Saad’s work is driven by her powerful desire to ‘become a good ancestor’; to live and work in ways that leave a legacy of healing and liberation for those who will come after she is gone. She earned her Bachelor of Law degree from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. She lives in Doha\, Qatar with her husband\, Sam\, and two children\, Maya and Mohamed. Learn more at www.laylafsaad.com.

These were the Interrupted life years. \nThis event will be on Zoom and live streamed to our Facebook page. Make sure you like and follow us to get the live stream notification! \nSuggested donation: $10.

SUMMARY:Sex Is Work - Two Documentaries by Elliat Graney-Saucke
DESCRIPTION:Screening of Conflict of Identity (Berlin Identities) and the US Culture Wars (Christian Right and Gender/Sex Radicals)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPRE-RECORDED \nScreening two short documentaries by Elliat Graney-Saucke. The first is Conflict of Identity that considers mixed cultural realities in Berlin\, Germany\, including Afro-German Femme Performer and Palestinian-Israeli Sex Worker Performance Artist. This will be followed by a short about the US Culture Wars and defunding of the National Endowment for the Arts in the 1990s by the New Christian Right. This session begins: Screening will start on July 22 at midnight PDT / 9am CEST and be available for 24 hours (until July 22\, 11:59pm PDT / July 23\, 8:59am CEST). \nThis event is part of the the online bashment that is not only a birthday celebration for The BSWC’s founder MF Akynos: it will be 22 hours of non-stop edutainment! Bridging the gap between sex work and other forms of labor and human rights issues\, our aim is to raise awareness and give support to sex workers and other freelance artists/laborers being left out of financial plans from local government. \n‘Who’s Allowed To Make Money?’ when government and policy only recognizes some workers and not all\, vulnerable workers are left without rights\, protections\, and supports. Restricting sex workers to the margins\, outside of what is considered “real work\,” prevents us from participating in labor struggles\, as well as limits our access to the protections guaranteed to other workers. Because of current regulatory and conceptual frameworks of sex work as “not real work” our profession has unnecessary impacts on our legal status\, health\, housing and food security\, and our families. \nTo raise awareness of these issues The BSWC invites you to help us raise $43\,000 which will directly support US based sex workers and freelancers who are being impacted by COVID-19\, and who have been excluded from accessing other supports intended for workers. \nArtists and performers across Australia\, Canada\, Europe and the US will take part in this groundbreaking\, one-of-a-kind\, non-stop party and education fest. Experience DJs\, burlesque showcases\, workshops\, symposiums\, film screenings\, poetry readings and other forms of engagement in streams that can be seen at different hours across continents. \nIt’s a one-day only\, 22 hour event that you don’t want to miss! Sign up to attend each performance separately\, your ticket is for the performance of your choice. Each ticket includes information on how to access your event. Check back here for the schedule as it is updated\, and don’t forget to purchase a T-shirt to support the event and the BSWC! We have lots of other ways to support on our website as well\, so check in there at www.TheBSWC.org
