SUMMARY:Freedom Film Series #5: To Treat Kids Like Me (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:“To Treat Kids Like Me:” Dec 12 screening & discussion\, sponsored by Donkeysaddle Projects\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nWith severe medicine shortages and an overstretched health care system in Gaza\, children in need of medical treatments can only find them outside the strip. Yet Israel’s convoluted\, arbitrary permit process leaves them waiting in pain\, often missing life-saving care. To Treat Kids Like Me (produced by Donkeysaddle Projects and +972 Magazine) follows the family of Mohamed Saleh and several other children in the Gaza Strip as they navigate the often Kafqaesqe process of getting permission from the Israeli army to leave the besieged strip for medical treatments that are unavailable there. \nThe 5th offering in DSP’s Freedom Film Series will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker Jen Marlowe and special guests: \n\nGhada Majadli: Director of the Physicians for Human Rights-Israel department for Palestinians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT); featured in To Treat Kids Like Me.\nMohamed Lafi: Public health professional working for the World Health Organization in the OPT\, with a focus on access to health care for patients who need to seek care outside the OPT.\nFadi Abu Shammalah: Manager of Donkeysaddle’s Palestine Grassroots Distribution Project; has been DSP’s on-the-ground support for Mohamad Salah (who is featured in To Treat Kids Like Me)\nMiranda Cleland: Communications Manager for Defense for Children International-Palestine (DCIP). DCIP documents cases like Mohamed’s where Israeli forces kill or injure Palestinian children.\n\nTickets by donation. 50% of ticket proceeds go to Palestine Grassroots Distribution Project\, including Mohamad Salah’s medical care. \nCo-sponsored by Just Vision & Defense for Children International-Palestine

SUMMARY:Antonio Rey - Flamenco Guitar Master from Spain with Seffarine
DESCRIPTION:Flamenco Guitar virtuoso from Spain\, Antonio Rey makes his Seattle debut after winning the 2020 Latin Grammy for best flamenco album \nSeffarine’s international blend of sounds features soulful Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp. Their music embraces and extends Naki’s rich heritage\, which spans from Moorish Spain to the Sahara\, by mixing Arabic Andalusi music with Manuel Gutierrez’s explosive flamenco footwork\, the grooves of acclaimed bassist Damian Erskine and the exotic instrumentation of Persian master multi-instrumentalist Bobak Salehi. These diverse backgrounds meld into an intoxicating blend of ancient and modern that Bass Player Magazine describes as a “gorgeous intersection of Spanish flamenco\, Arabic and Andalusian music\, Persian classical\, and jazz”. \nSeffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking square in Lamiae’s home city of Fes\, Morocco. Her family is well known in the Seffarine as master metalworkers continuing the tradition today. The square dates back to the 9th century and is famous for the complex rhythms that can be heard from the blacksmiths’ hammers.

SUMMARY:On Borrowed Time in Gaza: Art in Confinement: Monica Reyes Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join us November 24th at Monica Reyes Gallery in Vancouver for the opening of the exhibition “On Borrowed Time in Gaza: Art in Confinement”: \nDrawings and Paintings by Palestinian\, Gaza based artists:\nMajdal Nateel Maisara Baroud\nMaha Daya Mohammed Alhaj\nRufida Sehwail Ganem Alden\nMónica Reyes Gallery\n602 East Hastings (at Princess)\, Vancouver\nWednesday November 24 to Saturday November 27\, 2021.\nHours: 12 to 5pm\nClosing reception and walkthrough: Saturday November 27 at 1:00pm\nArt in Confinement evokes perseverance\, humanism\, and creativity in dark times. The\nexhibition represents expressions from life in Gaza by six Palestinian artists\, whose works defy a brutal Israeli blockade imposed on over two million Palestinians. Crossing states’ boundaries and aerial spaces to reach Turtle Island\, the works affirm Palestinian hope\,\npersistence\, endurance\, and love of art and life. The two hundred drawings and\npaintings are a testament of the power of art\, the power of imagination under bombardment\, and aspiration for a just and peaceful life in a forsaken world.\nMaking art in Gaza is an act of survival\, refusal\, and resistance to unendurable conditions\ninflicted on Palestinians in the largest collective prison on earth. Deprivation of the Palestinian artists in Gaza from their right to freedom of movement\, their right to connect with the rest of the art community and the public in colonized Palestine and beyond has not stopped them from making art. Despite Israel’s prohibition of art material and supplies from entering Gaza\, or prohibiting art from exiting Gaza\, artists continue to create engaging art\, representing their experiences in confinement\, isolation\, and deprivation of basic human rights.\n100% of the sales of the artworks\, ranging in price from $50 to $1500 will be going to the artists and art therapy programs for children in Gaza. This exhibition is a call for support of Palestinian artists who live and work under extreme conditions in Gaza

SUMMARY:Queen Naija: The Butterfly Tour at the Showbox
DESCRIPTION:With the recent arrival of her debut album missunderstood\, Atlanta-based singer/songwriter Queen Naija has cemented her status as one of R&B’s most compelling young stars. Hailed as “the first soul star of the social media generation” by The New York Times\, the 25-year-old Detroit native has amassed over three billion combined global streams to date\, each song showcasing the powerful vocal skills she first developed by singing in church. Although she initially found fame through a YouTube channel launched with her former husband\, Queen struck out on her own with her breakthrough single “Medicine”: a January 2018 release that debuted at No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 (a nearly-unheard-of achievement for an unsigned artist)\, and quickly landed her a deal with Capitol Records. By summer 2018\, she’d delivered a critically acclaimed self-titled EP\, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart and earned major recognition in the 2019 awards season (including nominations for Top R&B Artist at the Billboard Music Awards and Best New Artist at the BET Awards\, in addition to three nods at the iHeartRadio Music Awards).

SUMMARY:The Nakba and its Generational Impact on Palestinian lives: Memory\, Identity\, and a Future rooted in Justice
DESCRIPTION:The Foundation for Middle East Peace & Project48 invite you to join \nThe Nakba and its Generational Impact on Palestinian lives: Memory\, Identity\, and a Future rooted in Justice \nFriday\, November 19th\, 2021 \n10:30am – 11:45am ET \nFeaturing Palestinians who lived through the 1948 Nakba and their descendants: \nNida El-Muti\, Dina El-Muti\, and Hasan Hammami \nIn conversation with Peter Beinart (FMEP Non-resident fellow) \nRSVP here \nThe Nakba\, the displacement of over 750\,000 Palestinians from their homeland from 1947-49\, is among the root causes of the conflict in Palestine-Israel and critical to understanding the failure of the decades-long “peace-process\,” and the level of justice and reparations required to achieve a sustainable future. We will hear the personal stories of those who survived the ethnic cleansing of their cities and villages\, and learn from them and their descendants how the trauma of the Nakba and Israel’s ongoing policies of erasure have shaped their lives. We’ll also ask about their visions for the future\, what justice looks like\, and how they sustain connections to their homeland from the diaspora. \nParticipants: \nNida El-Muti: Born in Jericho to Fatima Radwan\, a survivor of the 1948 Deir Yassin massacre\, Nida was raised in Ramallah and at sixteen immigrated to New Jersey with her mother. Nida put herself through school at Rutgers University\, earned a masters in human physiology and worked at Robert Wood Johnson in the department of microbiology\, and at Rutgers medical school as a senior technologist in the IVF program. For fifteen years\, Nida taught anatomy and physiology at  Eastern Illinois university. She is currently retired and living in Chicago. \nDina El-Muti: Born in Denton\, TX\, Dina grew up in a small town in East Central Illinois\, and is now a recent transplant back to Texas\, specifically\, Houston. The granddaughter of Fatima Radwan\, who lived through the 1948 Nakba\, Dina is the mother of two little boys and a trauma clinician who has worked for organizations including Defence for Children International\, Palestine (DCI-P)\, the Treatment & Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture (TRC)\, and various social service organizations serving children who have experienced early childhood trauma. Dina attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign for undergrad and earned a masters in social work at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dina grew up on the hyphen: both Palestinian and American\, on a steady diet of Edward Said\, Malcolm X\, and her grandmother Fatima’s timeless stories that fundamentally changed the trajectory of her life and work. \nHasan Hammami: Born in Jaffa\, Palestine in 1932\, Hasan was educated at the Christian Brothers College in Jaffa until he was forced to flee on a cargo sailboat at age 15\, with 3000 people\, during the Nakba. At 18\, after 3 years at the National College of Choueifat and the American University of Beirut\, Hasan had to abandon his education to help support his family by working for the oil company Aramco in Saudi Arabia\, where he lived in a desert labor camp. He completed his engineering education at the University of Nottingham\, England and joined Procter and Gamble where he launched manufacturing operations in Iraq and Saudi Arabia\, and with increasing responsibilities led large projects in several parts of the world. Father to three daughters and a step-son living on 4 continents\, Hasan has served organizations such as the Arab American Association and the Palestine Human Rights Campaign\, among others\, focusing on civil and human rights for all\, advancement of Arab Americans and Interfaith work. A US citizen for 37 years\, a citizen of the world for nearly 70\, and with 25 country moves behind him\, Hasan\, now 89\, continues to grow & share as a retiree in Florida. \nPeter Beinart is Non-Resident Fellow at the Foundation for Middle East Peace. He is also a Professor of Journalism and Political Science at the City University of New York\, a Contributing opinion writer at the New York Times\, an Editor-at-Large at Jewish Currents\, and a CNN Political Commentator. He tweets @PeterBeinart and publishes on peterbeinart.substack.com

SUMMARY:Arab Film Festival 2021
DESCRIPTION:We are putting the finishing touches to AFF2021’s schedule and can’t wait to share it! In the meantime\, here’s a little preview of what’s coming: \n\nA selection of shorts from Iraq and Lebanon\nOur annual Queer Lens\nAward winning features including Moss Agate\, Our River…Our Sky\, and 200 Meters\nA spotlight on documentaries directed by women\nand more!\n\nMoss Agate (Lebanon\, 2021)\nBeirut\, summer 2019.  The filmmaker experiences a descent into the abyss. His health is at stake and his film community is falling apart.  His actress friend Tamara is the last one to leave… \nOur River…Our Sky (Iraq\, 2020)\nIn a typically mixed Baghdadi neighborhood in 2006\, a community of ordinary people try to live their everyday lives amidst the threat of unpredictable violence. At the heart of these intersecting stories we find Sara\, a single mother and novelist. With the news of Saddam Hussein’s sudden execution shortly before the New Year\, Sara and her neighbors brace themselves for an uncertain future. Yet\, like a miracle\, each is able to sustain a fragile sense of hope. \n200 Meters (Palestine\, 2020)\nMustafa and his wife Salwa live 200 meters apart in villages separated by the Israeli border wall. One day he gets a call every parent dreads: his son has been injured in an accident. Rushing to cross the Israeli checkpoint\, Mustafa is denied on a technicality. But a father’s love won’t give up and he will do anything to reach his son. A 200 meter distance becomes a 200 kilometer odyssey\, as Mustafa\, left with no choice\, attempts to smuggle himself to the other side of the wall.
