SUMMARY:Seffarine: Edmonds City Park Concert
DESCRIPTION:Seffarine’s international blend of sounds features soulful Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp. Their music embraces and extends Naki’s rich heritage\, which spans from Moorish Spain to the Sahara\, by mixing Arabic Andalusi music with Manuel Gutierrez’s explosive flamenco footwork\, the grooves of acclaimed bassist Damian Erskine and the exotic instrumentation of Persian master multi-instrumentalist Bobak Salehi. These diverse backgrounds meld into an intoxicating blend of ancient and modern that Bass Player Magazine describes as a “gorgeous intersection of Spanish flamenco\, Arabic and Andalusian music\, Persian classical\, and jazz”. \n\nSeffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking square in Lamiae’s home city of Fes\, Morocco. Her family is well known in the Seffarine as master metalworkers continuing the tradition today. The square dates back to the 9th century and is famous for the complex rhythms that can be heard from the blacksmiths’ hammers.

SUMMARY:Live Reading & Discussion with Mona Kareem
DESCRIPTION:6 p.m. EDT\, Thursday\, Aug. 13\, 2020\nLive Reading & Discussion with Mona Kareem\nFree\, livestreamed on Facebook\nRSVP to Facebook event  \nJoin AANM artist-in-residence Mona Kareem for a live reading from her poetry collection Crossover\, and discussion with AANM director Dr. Diana Abouali. \nThroughout her residency\, taking place remotely\, Kareem is finalizing Crossover\, a poetry collection that touches on themes particular to Arab experience/s in the United States: the loss or gain of language\, the weight of a marked body passing through airports\, the lingua of immigration and bureaucratic violence\, and the fetishization of Arab sexuality in visual culture and colonial imaginary. The poems cross a range of narratives\, working beyond the typical family-story\, as many of us have arrived alone to this continent. They explore what this loneliness entails\, especially for the bilingual artist. \nMona Kareem is the author of three poetry collections\, most recently Femme Ghosts (Publication Studio\, 2019)\, a trilingual chapbook. Her work has been translated into nine languages and published in anthologies and periodicals\, including Brooklyn Rail\, Michigan Quarterly Review\, Ambit\, The Los Angeles Review of Books\, Asymptote\, Words Without Borders\, Poetry International\, PEN English\, Modern Poetry in Translation\, Two Lines and Specimen. She has held fellowships with Poetry International\, BANFF Center\, Norwich Center and Forum Transregionale Studien. Kareem has been a featured writer at festivals and conferences in Cairo\, Istanbul\, Berlin\, Amsterdam\, Brussels\, Seoul\, Copenhagen and across the United States. She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from SUNY Binghamton\, and has taught at SUNY Binghamton\, Rutgers\, Bronx Community College and the University of Maryland. \n  \nRelated event: Aug. 30: Virtual Poetry Workshop with Mona Kareem

SUMMARY:The Good Old Days in Jaffa: Hasan Hammami\, Episode III
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third episode in our conversation series with 87-year-old Nakba survivor\, Hasan Hammami.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nJoin Hasan Hammami\, an 87-year-old Nakba survivor from Jaffa\, Palestine as he shares about what life was like in Jaffa before 1948 – his life and experiences in Jaffa up to age 15\, when he and his family were forced out of their home and country on a Cargo Sailboat with nearly 3\,000 people packed like sardines. A personal review of his memories\, of family\, neighborhood\, City and Country\, relating what it was like to grow up in this pre-Biblical city and country. These were the Good Years. \nHasan will also share about his seven years as a stateless Palestinian refugee youth: navigating through the interrupted life of being a stateless Palestinian refugee as he adjusted to life and schooling in Lebanon\, to years of survival as a teenage worker in a Saudi Arabian Desert Labor camp\, earning a living as a Translator and Statistical Analyst to build what has turned out as a foundation of friends\, learning and associations for a life in the Diaspora. These were the Interrupted life years. \nThis event will be on Zoom and live streamed to our Facebook page. Make sure you like and follow us to get the live stream notification! \nSuggested donation: $10. Free for Resilience Monthly Club Members. \nThanks to our Resilience Club supporters\, we are able to host weekly events on Palestinian culture\, history and heritage. SUMMARY:Sex Is Work - Two Documentaries by Elliat Graney-Saucke
DESCRIPTION:Screening of Conflict of Identity (Berlin Identities) and the US Culture Wars (Christian Right and Gender/Sex Radicals)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPRE-RECORDED \nScreening two short documentaries by Elliat Graney-Saucke. The first is Conflict of Identity that considers mixed cultural realities in Berlin\, Germany\, including Afro-German Femme Performer and Palestinian-Israeli Sex Worker Performance Artist. This will be followed by a short about the US Culture Wars and defunding of the National Endowment for the Arts in the 1990s by the New Christian Right. This session begins: Screening will start on July 22 at midnight PDT / 9am CEST and be available for 24 hours (until July 22\, 11:59pm PDT / July 23\, 8:59am CEST). \nThis event is part of the the online bashment that is not only a birthday celebration for The BSWC’s founder MF Akynos: it will be 22 hours of non-stop edutainment! Bridging the gap between sex work and other forms of labor and human rights issues\, our aim is to raise awareness and give support to sex workers and other freelance artists/laborers being left out of financial plans from local government. \n‘Who’s Allowed To Make Money?’ when government and policy only recognizes some workers and not all\, vulnerable workers are left without rights\, protections\, and supports. Restricting sex workers to the margins\, outside of what is considered “real work\,” prevents us from participating in labor struggles\, as well as limits our access to the protections guaranteed to other workers. Because of current regulatory and conceptual frameworks of sex work as “not real work” our profession has unnecessary impacts on our legal status\, health\, housing and food security\, and our families. \nTo raise awareness of these issues The BSWC invites you to help us raise $43\,000 which will directly support US based sex workers and freelancers who are being impacted by COVID-19\, and who have been excluded from accessing other supports intended for workers. \nArtists and performers across Australia\, Canada\, Europe and the US will take part in this groundbreaking\, one-of-a-kind\, non-stop party and education fest. Experience DJs\, burlesque showcases\, workshops\, symposiums\, film screenings\, poetry readings and other forms of engagement in streams that can be seen at different hours across continents. \nIt’s a one-day only\, 22 hour event that you don’t want to miss! Sign up to attend each performance separately\, your ticket is for the performance of your choice. Each ticket includes information on how to access your event. Check back here for the schedule as it is updated\, and don’t forget to purchase a T-shirt to support the event and the BSWC! We have lots of other ways to support on our website as well\, so check in there at www.TheBSWC.org
