SUMMARY:Excavating Dangeil: Royal Statues and Sacred Rams
DESCRIPTION:Register by clicking here.\n\nJoin Dr. Julie Anderson for an exploration of the Dangeil archeological site.\nExcavations at Dangeil\, located close to the Nile in what is now central Sudan\, have uncovered a previously unknown 1st century CE temple dedicated to the god Amun. Earlier rulers discovered there in a statue hoard include the celebrated Kushite Pharoah Taharqo. This is one of many discoveries at Dangeil throwing unexpected light on African history from antiquity into the medieval period and later.\n\nDr. Julie Anderson is responsible for curating the Sudanese and Nubian collections of the British Museum. Excavating at numerous sites in Egypt and Sudan since 1987\, her research interests include daily life and material culture in the Nile valley and surrounding deserts. Since 1997\, she has co-directed archaeological excavations in Sudan together with the National Corporation for Antiquities and Museums (NCAM) in the Berber-Abidiya region. Her current fieldwork is concentrated upon the late Kushite site of Dangeil (3rd century BC – 4th century AD)\, situated approximately 350km north of Khartoum\, where excavation of a large Amun temple\, surrounding temenos enclosure and associated cemetery is underway. Currently\, she is the Honorary Secretary for the International Society for Nubian Studies and for the Sudan Archaeological Research Society.\nThis program is presented in partnership with the American Research Center in Egypt.\n\n\n1:00 p.m. EST — 7:00 p.m. EET \n\n\nPlease help the NAC support artists. By making a donation with your registration\, you contribute directly to the NAC Artist Fellows program\, helping to further the careers of up-and-coming artists.\nThis program will be hosted via Zoom. You will receive additional details upon registration.\nAll images copyright Berber-Abidiya Archaeological Project.

SUMMARY:Seffarine: Edmonds City Park Concert
DESCRIPTION:Seffarine’s international blend of sounds features soulful Moroccan singer Lamiae Naki and flamenco guitarist Nat Hulskamp. Their music embraces and extends Naki’s rich heritage\, which spans from Moorish Spain to the Sahara\, by mixing Arabic Andalusi music with Manuel Gutierrez’s explosive flamenco footwork\, the grooves of acclaimed bassist Damian Erskine and the exotic instrumentation of Persian master multi-instrumentalist Bobak Salehi. These diverse backgrounds meld into an intoxicating blend of ancient and modern that Bass Player Magazine describes as a “gorgeous intersection of Spanish flamenco\, Arabic and Andalusian music\, Persian classical\, and jazz”. \n\nSeffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking square in Lamiae’s home city of Fes\, Morocco. Her family is well known in the Seffarine as master metalworkers continuing the tradition today. The square dates back to the 9th century and is famous for the complex rhythms that can be heard from the blacksmiths’ hammers.

SUMMARY:Virtual Book Club: Me and White Supremacy
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Book Club: Me and White Supremacy\n\nSession 1: 6:30 p.m. EDT Thursday\, July 23\, 2020\nSession 2: 6:30 p.m. EDT Thursday\, August 6\, 2020\nFree on Zoom\nSIGN-UP REQUIRED \nThe next phase of AANM’s Virtual Book Club will bring community together for timely and crucial discussions about white supremacy and racism within each of ourselves and within the Arab American community*. AANM Artists-in-Residence Kamelya Omayma Youssef and Mariam Bazeed will help guide participants through exercises from the book\, Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad\, and engage in dialogue.  \n*All are encouraged to take part in this work\, but for this program we especially welcome Arab Americans who are new to these conversations\, including youth ages 15+ and their parents\, grandparents\, and other trusted friends\, family and community members.  \nDialogues will take place in two sessions on Zoom\, on Thursday\, July 23\, and Thursday\, Aug. 6 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. EDT. In order to allow for productive discussion and full engagement\, space is limited. \nSIGN UP TO PARTICIPATE \nJOIN OUR FACEBOOK GROUP \nPlease note that the discussion and group entry is free\, but books are for sale. Due to high demand\, please be sure to order your book as soon as possible.  \n\n\n\nWe encourage readers to purchase books from their local Black-owned bookstores. Find a Black-owned bookstore near you   \nFor other ways to purchase\, including e-books and audiobooks\, visit www.meandwhitesupremacybook.com \n\n\n\n\n  \nABOUT THE BOOK\nWhen Layla Saad ran a free month-long Instagram challenge during the summer of 2018\, she had no idea it would become an international cultural movement. Thousands of people from around the world were galvanized by the #meandwhitesupremacy challenge\, examining and owning responsibility for the ways in which they uphold white supremacy. Over 80\,000 people downloaded her guide to the movement\, Me and White Supremacy Workbook in the space of just six months. And now\, that guide is a published book. Me and White Supremacy leads readers through a journey of understanding their white privilege and participation in white supremacy\, so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on Black\, Indigenous and people of color\, and in turn\, help other white people do better\, too. The book goes beyond the original workbook by adding more historical and cultural contexts\, sharing moving stories and anecdotes\, and includes expanded definitions\, examples\, and further resources.  \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nLayla Saad is a globally respected writer\, speaker and podcast host on the topics of race\, identity\, leadership\, personal transformation and social change. As an East African\, Arab\, British\, Black\, Muslim woman who was born and grew up in the West\, and lives in Middle East\, she has always sat at a unique intersection of identities from which she is able to draw rich and intriguing perspectives. Saad’s work is driven by her powerful desire to ‘become a good ancestor’; to live and work in ways that leave a legacy of healing and liberation for those who will come after she is gone. She earned her Bachelor of Law degree from Lancaster University in the United Kingdom. She lives in Doha\, Qatar with her husband\, Sam\, and two children\, Maya and Mohamed. Learn more at www.laylafsaad.com.

SUMMARY:The Good Old Days in Jaffa: Hasan Hammami\, Episode III
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the third episode in our conversation series with 87-year-old Nakba survivor\, Hasan Hammami.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nJoin Hasan Hammami\, an 87-year-old Nakba survivor from Jaffa\, Palestine as he shares about what life was like in Jaffa before 1948 – his life and experiences in Jaffa up to age 15\, when he and his family were forced out of their home and country on a Cargo Sailboat with nearly 3\,000 people packed like sardines. A personal review of his memories\, of family\, neighborhood\, City and Country\, relating what it was like to grow up in this pre-Biblical city and country. These were the Good Years. \nHasan will also share about his seven years as a stateless Palestinian refugee youth: navigating through the interrupted life of being a stateless Palestinian refugee as he adjusted to life and schooling in Lebanon\, to years of survival as a teenage worker in a Saudi Arabian Desert Labor camp\, earning a living as a Translator and Statistical Analyst to build what has turned out as a foundation of friends\, learning and associations for a life in the Diaspora. These were the Interrupted life years. \nThis event will be on Zoom and live streamed to our Facebook page. Make sure you like and follow us to get the live stream notification! \nSuggested donation: $10. Free for Resilience Monthly Club Members. \nThanks to our Resilience Club supporters\, we are able to host weekly events on Palestinian culture\, history and heritage.
