SUMMARY:Laila Lalami with Viet Thanh Nguyen (livestream) Conditional Citizens
DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be an American? Author Laila Lalami joins us via livestream to discuss this question in conversation with fellow author Viet Thanh Nguyen. Drawing from her book Conditional Citizen\, she recounts her unlikely journey from Moroccan immigrant to US citizen\, using it as a starting point for her exploration of the rights\, liberties\, and protections that are traditionally associated with American citizenship. Tapping into history\, politics\, and literature\, she interrogates how white supremacy survives through adaptation and legislation\, keeping the modern equivalent of white male landowners at the top of the social hierarchy. With deeply personal stories\, Lalami invites us to explore the place of nonwhites in the broader American culture.\n\n\n\nLaila Lalami was born in Rabat and educated in Morocco\, Great Britain\, and the United States. She is the author of four award-winning novels: Secret Son\, Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits\, The Other Americans\, and The Moor’s Account. Her essays have appeared in the Los Angeles Times\, The Washington Post\, The Nation\, Harper’s\, The Guardian\, and The New York Times. Lalami is a professor of creative writing at the University of California at Riverside. You can follow her on Twitter @LailaLalami. \nViet Thanh Nguyen is a writer\, whose novel The Sympathizer won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. He has written and edited a number of other works\, and is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times. He is an English professor at the University of Southern California. You can follow him on Twitter @viet_t_nguyen.

SUMMARY:P&P Live!: Diane Nine – My Life With Helen: The Dean of the White House Press Corps Through Her Agent's Eyes
DESCRIPTION:P&P Live!: Diane Nine – My Life With Helen: The Dean of the White House Press Corps Through Her Agent’s Eyes — with Cindy Williams\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday\, September 13\, 2020 – 5 p.m EST (2 p.m PST)\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event will be streamed online as part of our P&P Live! Series. \nThere’s no denying that Helen Thomas was a larger-than-life personality\, but more importantly\, she was a trailblazer for women in journalism. Professionally\, she reported on more presidential administrations than anyone in history\, and she rightfully earned her place–front row\, center–as the Dean of the White House Press Corps. However\, later in her life\, Helen made some regrettable comments that subsequently ended her illustrious career and tarnished her reputation. \nIn My Life With Helen\, readers learn for the first time what was going on behind the scenes after Helen’s fall from grace and how Diane struggled to come to terms with the media frenzy that followed. \nDiane S. Nine is a Washington\, D.C.-based literary agent and attorney\, the author of Get Published: A Guide to Literary Tips\, Traps & Truth\, and the president of Nine Speakers\, Inc. \nActress\, writer and producer Cindy Williams has starred in some of the most historical movies and television programs in entertainment history. Her career began in the 1970s in prestigious movies like Travels with My Aunt \, American Graffiti\, and The Conversation. Once she and Penny Marshall played “loose girls” on the hit TV show Happy Days\, the network quickly ordered a spin-off of the dynamic comedy duo. After changing their characters to blue-collar workers in the mid-West\, they made their debut in Laverne & Shirleyin 1976. The show quickly became the most-watched American television program. The show remains in syndication around the world and has a very loyal following of original and new fans. Cindy continues to work in her first love\, the theater\, as she performs in musicals all over the country. She is the author of Shirley\, I Jest. \n  \nInstead of a set ticket price\, we ask that you contribute what you can to support Politics and Prose Bookstore and our virtual event series. We know that everyone has been affected in these trying times\, and we will continue to make our programming accessible to all. That said\, a suggested contribution of $5\, $10\, whatever you can afford\, will go a long way to keep our programming—and our bookstore—afloat as we are forced to adapt to new ways of business.  \nThe other way you can support us is always by purchasing a book from our website. \nWe are so grateful to be surrounded by such a loyal and engaged community and we thank you for your support\, now and always. \nCLICK HERE to join the Live! Event.

SUMMARY:Palestine Museum: "Stitching Palestine" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Screening of the Film “Stitching Palestine” \n\nSaturday\, September 5\, 2020\n12:00 PM  2:00 PM EST / 9:00 AM 11:00 AM PST\n\n\n—\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Story behind Stitching Palestine \nTwelve Palestinian women sit before us and talk of their life before the Diaspora\, of their memories\, of their lives and of their identity.\nTheir narratives are connected by the enduring thread of the ancient art of embroidery. \nTwelve resilient\, determined and articulate women from disparate walks of life: lawyers\, artists\, housewives\, activists\, architects\, and politicians stitch together the story of their homeland\, of their dispossession\, and of their unwavering determination that justice will prevail. \nThrough their stories\, the individual weaves into the collective\, yet remaining distinctly personal. Twelve women\, twelve life-spans and stories from Palestine; a land whose position was fixed on the map of the world\, but is now embroidered on its face.

SUMMARY:Tatreez Workshops and Lectures by Tatreez and Tea
DESCRIPTION:Your instructor is author and scholar Wafa Ghnaim\, founder of Tatreez & Tea! \nTatreez & Tea’s mission is to preserve Palestinian embroidery and storytelling traditions in the diaspora. Tatreez & Tea is the first of it’s kind. When Wafa first founded Tatreez & Tea in 2016\, she was the only educator solely focused on Palestinian embroidery\, traveling the US and the world. Now\, new local initiatives\, culture bearers\, “tatreez circles”\, and mentors are emerging from communities around the world like never before. The tatreez revolution has gained a beautiful momentum and now is the time to join. \nWafa’s goal in her educational classes are three-fold: educate students from art history and oral history perspectives that preserve the meanings\, stories and symbolism of traditional Palestinian embroidery motifs; teach versatile skills that allow students to eventually produce large independent projects; encourage students to become creative and grow beyond simply abiding by traditional embroidery principles. \nClick here for upcoming events! \nhttps://www.tatreezandtea.com/events

SUMMARY:The Goddess Isis and the Kingdom of Meroe - ARCE Members Only
DESCRIPTION:The Goddess Isis and the Kingdom of Meroe\n\n\nDr. Solange Ashby\n\n2:00 PM Illinois/12pm PST\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiscussions of the widespread appeal of the cult of Isis in antiquity often omit any mention of the Nubian priests who served the rulers of the Kingdom of Meroe (located south of Egypt in the Sudan) and the royal donations of gold that they delivered to the temple of Isis at Philae\, located at Egypt’s border with Nubia. Those funds were essential to the survival of the temple of Philae\, allowing it to remain in active use for centuries after other temples had been abandoned in Egypt. I will describe the rites performed by the Nubian priests and their participation in a tradition of Nubian pilgrimage to this site that spanned one thousand years. \nAs a Black Egyptologist it is important to me to investigate the southern connections that are evident in the ancient religious practices of Egypt. Much work remains to be done to highlight these connections. \n\nThis online lecture is available exclusively to active ARCE members. To register\, click here.\nRegistration is required and closes 48 hours before the event.\nBiography of Solange Ashby: \nSolange Ashby received her PhD in Egyptology\, with a specialization in ancient Egyptian language and Nubian religion\, from the University of Chicago. She has researched in Egypt at the temple of Philae and participated in an archaeological excavation in El-Kurru\, Sudan (royal Kushite cemetery). Her first book\, Calling Out to Isis: The Enduring Nubian Presence at Philae\, was released in July by Gorgias Press.  Her current research explores the roles of women in traditional Nubian religious practices. Dr. Ashby is working on the first monograph dedicated to the history\, religious symbolism\, and political power of the queens of Kush.
