The formal program will last through 2020. But we hope the relationships will continue beyond. Register below to attend the Kick-Off Event on March 3rd from 6-9pm at Foster Garvey LLC\, 1111 3rd Ave 30th fl\, Seattle\, WA 98101. \n***NOTE – By registering\, you are committing to: (1) attend the initial event\, (2) meet with your assigned mentor or mentee at least 3 times during the year\, and (3) make your best effort to attend at least 1 of the 3 additional Mentorship social events to be offered throughout the year. SUMMARY:Cancelled: ArabishWay Circle Time Series (2019-2020)
DESCRIPTION:DUE TO AN OVERABUNDANCE OF PRECAUTION – THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED! \nHopefully\, we will resume on May 7th! \nBring your little one down and join Laila for a circle time that will have songs\, stories and activities all in Arabic followed by snack and craft time. \nWe will meet once each month and each month will have a theme: (September: alphabet\, October: numbers\, etc.) and the books\, songs and activities will correlate with this theme. \nCircle time is great for non-native speakers who want to expose their child to another language as well as native speakers who want to expose their children to Arabic outside of the home.  It’s also been a great place for people to meet and get to know other families. \nWe will have the meeting room from 10am – 11:30am.  The circle time will run from 10:30am-11:00am followed by informal snack/craft which can be done in class or completed at home. \nRepeats monthly on the 2nd Thursday of the month until February then March through June will be the 1st Thursday of the month. \nThis circle time is geared towards toddlers and early preschool but all ages are welcome and will enjoy the activities!

SUMMARY:Marc Ribot and Gordon Grdina's Haram at Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Guitar legend Marc Ribot has released 25 albums over a 40-year career. As part of Town Hall’s Global Rhythms series\, Ribot takes the stage alongside Vancouver’s culture-blending band Haram\, whose work draws inspiration from legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthoum. Together they create a new sonically breathtaking view of time-tested repertoire. \nRibot is joined onstage by Haram\, a Vancouver-based group led by Juno Award-winning oud virtuoso and guitarist Gordon Grdina. Haram filters Arabic music through the creative lens of improvisation\, paying homage to the masters while still freely developing an original voice. Classics from Farid El Atrache\, Oum Khalsoum\, Iraqi folk songs\, and 50’s Sudanese radio music all resonate and inspire the ensemble to dig deeper and give more freely. Listen in for a double-billed performance showcase as Ribot teams up with Haram to navigate Arabic musical traditions.

SUMMARY:Tel Aviv on Fire as part of the Saint Mark's Mideast Focus Ministry Middle East Film Series
DESCRIPTION:Please join our brothers and sisters at Saint Mark’s Mideast Focus Ministry for a film series to educate and promote understanding about the struggle for peace and justice in the Holy Land.  Each screening includes presentations by guest speakers with personal experience on the subject. The opening film “Tel Aviv on Fire” will feature guest speaker playwright Ed Mast. \n\n—–\nOur film series begins with humor because it is the most bearable coping device. Through satire we get perspective on our common humanity. Then we look at how Gazans try to make their desperate situation known to the world\, how families endure when their children are forcibly removed from their homes and placed in military prisons\, and how they cope when their homes are demolished before their eyes. Finally\, we explore some of the factors explaining why the U.S. leads the way in supporting this occupation.\nFilm Series Dates Include: \n\nFebruary 28\, 2020: Tel Aviv on Fire (catered reception at 6:15 p.m\, movie at 7pm)\nMarch 27\, 2020: Gaza Fights for Freedom\nApril 24\, 2020: Imprisoning a Generation\nMay 15\, 2020: The Lobby—U.S.A

DESCRIPTION:The El-Salomons take the motto ‘make love not war’ very personally. Comedy with Jess Salomon and Eman El-Husseini! \nThe El-Salomons take the motto ‘make love not war’ very personally. Jess Salomon (hilarious comic) and Eman El-Husseini (also hilarious comic) met and fell in love at a comedy club in Montreal nearly a decade ago when a friend of theirs suggested\, “you two broads should kiss”. \nJess is Jewish and Eman is Palestinian (basically enemies)\, one is a Taurus and one is a Leo (ENEMIES!!)\, but they somehow make it work. It’s probably the hummus. \nJess and Eman got married and left Canada for America right before the last election. They are famous for their love\, their stand up and their ability to make really REALLY fantastic life choices. \nThis website is a project of love. Illustrated by Jesse Brown\, these cartoons offer a view into the hilarious interactions Jess and Eman have with each other and with the world around them. \nHave a peek through all the cartoons! Don’t be a hater\, be a lover. \nxo \nThe El-Salomons \nFor more about Jess Salomon: www.JessSalomon.com \nFor more about Eman El-Husseini: www.Emantertainment.com \nFor more about Jesse Brown: www.BevanHoward.co.uk \n  \n(I posted this after the event and am so so sad I didn’t see it earlier – I will be adding the comedy club to my list of places to check each month!)

SUMMARY:A.S. Hamrah at Elliott Bay Book Company
DESCRIPTION:Writer and film critic A.S. Hamrah has many admirers\, including our booksellers at Elliott Bay\, and we’re very excited to have the opportunity to host a conversation with him tonight about his work\, some of which was collected in his book\, The Earth Dies Streaming: Film Writing 2002-2018 (n+1). \n“Hamrah is committed to his ambivalence\, conveying it with a mixture of precision and conviction that will remind you how much more there is to be gleaned from a review than whether a movie is ‘good ’ or ‘bad ’ (even if it’s a movie you happen to deem very good or very bad indeed) . . . A political awareness imbues Hamrah’s criticism without weighing it down. He doesn’t succumb to a leaden moralizing because he pays close attention to the medium he’s writing about\, alert to what he sees and hears.” —Jennifer Szalai\, New York Times. \nA. S. Hamrah has been n+1’s film critic since 2008 and was the editor of the magazine’s film review supplement. He also writes for a number of other publications including Harper’s\, The Baffler\, and Bookforum. He has worked as a movie theater projectionist\, a semiotic brand analyst\, a political pollster\, a football cinematographer\, a zine writer\, and for the film director Raúl Ruiz. \nCo-presented with Seattle International Film Festival. \n  \n\nI couldn’t find Hamrah’s ethinicity on line BUT I am assuming with the last name Hamrah that he must be! (Please let me know if you know otherwise!)
