SUMMARY:Open Book Club: Admiring Silence by Abdulrazak Gurnah (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:The unnamed narrator of this dazzling novel escapes from Zanzibar to England knowing that he will probably never return. In his new country\, things are not quite as he imagined – the school where he teaches is cramped and violent\, and he quickly forgets how it feels to belong.  But when he meets a beautiful\, rebellious woman named Emma\, and when Emma\, turns away from her white\, middle-class roots to offer him love and bear him a child\, the narrator chooses to hide his past from his new family and his present circumstance from his family back in Zanzibar.  Twenty years later\, when the barriers at last come down in Zanzibar\, he is compelled to go back. What he discovers there\, in a story potent with truth\, will change the entire vision of his life.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is a 1996 novel by the 2021 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbdulrazak Gurnah was born on 20 December 1948[5] in the Sultanate of Zanzibar\, which is now part of present-day Tanzania.[6] He left the island at the age of 18 following the overthrow of the ruling Arab elite in the Zanzibar Revolution\,[3][1] arriving in England in 1968 as a refugee. He is of Arab heritage\,[7] and his father and uncle were businessmen who had immigrated from Yemen.[8] \n\nEvent date:\n\nThursday\, May 26\, 2022 – 7:30pm to 9:00pm\n\n\n\nEvent address:\n\n\n\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZAtcOmtqz8oE9FjOiOlsluyFQEPr6hcGlIP

SUMMARY:Mizna Film Series: RESTORED/RECOVERED: ALGERIAN FILMMAKING IN DIASPORA: DJOUHRA ABOUDA AND ALAIN BONNAMY RETROSPECTIVE
DESCRIPTION:The spring 2022 season of the Mizna Film Series highlights recently restored works by Algerian filmmakers in diaspora. Curated by Mizna’s Film Programming Coordinator Ahmed Abdulmageed\, the two-month segment presents films produced during the global leftist movements in the 1970s. This selection celebrates Algerian filmmakers and their collaborators\, Farouk Beloufa\, Djouhra Abouda\, and Alain Bonnamy\, who captured the political complexities of the moment\, as well as the rhythmic and aesthetic make-up of their diasporas\, by breaking away from traditional filmic forms. \nMAY 25–29 2022: NAHLA (dir. 1979\, Farouk Beloufa) \nIn May\, the Mizna Film Series highlights the work of Djouhra Abouda and Alain Bonnamy. Their films push the formal boundaries of filmmaking by combining experimental aesthetics with political and social commentary and action. While working in Paris\, Abouda and Bonnamy made two experimental short films\, Algérie Couleurs (1972) and Ciné-Cité (1974)\, and the feature-length Ali au pays des merveilles (1976). All three films were recently restored and digitized through the efforts of the Talitha Association\, and Léa Morin. \nScreening IN-PERSON at Trylon Cinema on Wednesday\, May 25\, 2022 at 7pm. TICKETS\n\nAvailable virtually May 26–29\, 2022 in the US ONLY. TICKETS

SUMMARY:Arab Film Series: ArteEast
DESCRIPTION:Arab Film Series online is pleased to present INTIMATE DISTANCE – a Mother’s Day special program on the meaning of motherhood and womanhood from the perspective of two renowned artists and filmmakers Mona Hatoum and Marianne Khoury.  \nHatoum’s personal short film Measures of Distance conveys the intimate relationship between mother and daughter through their exchanged letters during Hatoum’s life in exile\, it also reflects a tremendous sense of loss as a result of exile and separation caused by war. \nIn her feature length autobiographical documentary Let’s Talk\, Marianne Khoury reflects on her own family history\, and her complex relationship with her mother through an intimate and candid conversation between her and her daughter – exploring what it means to be a woman\, mother\, and an artist in the face of personal\, artistic\, and national crisis.

SUMMARY:2022 Online Film and Discussion MidEast Series: Sumud
DESCRIPTION:THE SPRING 2022 ONLINE FILM AND DISCUSSION SERIES  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe theme for this year’s Film Series is Sumud. This is a Palestinian word that means “Steadfastness” or “Steadfast Perseverance.” It is a cultural value in Palestine. There is no possible way Palestinians can defend themselves in the face of one of the most well-equipped military powers in the world. They practice “sumud” which sometimes is an act of making breakfast\, sometimes walking the children to the checkpoint on the way to school\, sometimes\, joining a peaceful protest at a blocked crossroad\, just to say “We are here!” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this series we will meet a young Israeli woman who also practices her own sumud as she resists joining the Israeli military. We will discover what sumud looks like in the devastation we call “Gaza”\, and in the tragedy we call “Hebron.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo receive links to the film (watch on your own time within 48 hours of the discussion) and the Zoom discussion\, send a message to seattlemideastfocus@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMAY 20\, 8 P.M. (discussion)\n200 METERS\nMustafa lives on the Palestinian-controlled side of the wall\, and Salwa and their children on the Israeli side. One day he gets the call every parent dreads: his son has been in an accident and is in the hospital. He will do anything to reach his son\, and after being denied access through the checkpoint on a technicality\, Mustafa embarks upon a journey to cross the border illegally. \nLearn more here. \nwith host: \nspecial guest:

SUMMARY:Indigenous Voices from Turtle Island on the Changing Earth: Town Hall (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:It can be easy to settle into the narrative that short-sighted\, individualist behavior is a natural trait of all humankind\, especially when considering how the human impact on the Earth has only recently become apparent to so many. But this narrative is not shared by all people and cultures; for the Indigenous people of the world\, radical alteration of the planet – and of life itself – is a story that is many generations long. It is also a story of adaptation\, perseverance\, courage\, and resourcefulness in the face of genocide and destruction. \nIn an innovative work of research and reportage\, We Are the Middle of Forever places Indigenous voices at the center of conversations about today’s environmental crisis. The book draws on interviews with people from different North American Indigenous cultures and communities\, generations\, and geographic regions. Together\, they share knowledge\, experience\, questions\, observations\, and dreams of maintaining the best relationship possible with all life. \nWe Are the Middle of Forever illuminates the perspectives of those who have been long-attuned to a changing planet. As we look for new ideas and responses to our shared human challenges\, Indigenous voices offer hope\, connection\, and a welcome antidote to the despair arising from the climate crisis. \nDahr Jamail is the author of Beyond the Green Zone: Dispatches from an Unembedded Journalist in Occupied Iraq as well as The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Disruption. He has won the Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism and the Izzy Award. He lives in Washington State.

SUMMARY:Virtual Poetry Book Event: Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear: Poems from Gaza
DESCRIPTION:Mosab Abu Toha is a Palestinian poet and librarian who grew up in Gaza; he will be in conversation with best-selling author Mary Karr to celebrate his debut book of poems\, Things You May Find Hidden in My Ear: Poems from Gaza published by City Lights Books. \n  \n“Mosab Abu Toha is an astonishingly gifted young poet from Gaza\, almost a seer with his eloquent lyrical vernacular … His poems break my heart and awaken it\, at the same time. I feel I have been waiting for his work all my life.”–Naomi Shihab Nye \nIn this poetry debut Mosab Abu Toha writes about his life under siege in Gaza\, first as a child\, and then as a young father. A survivor of four brutal military attacks\, he bears witness to a grinding cycle of destruction and assault\, and yet\, his poetry is inspired by a profound humanity. \nMosab founded the Edward Said Library (the first English-language library in Gaza)\, a project that MECA supports.

We will discover what sumud looks like in the devastation we call “Gaza”\, and in the tragedy we call “Hebron.” \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTo receive links to the film (watch on your own time within 48 hours of the discussion) and the Zoom discussion\, send a message to seattlemideastfocus@gmail.com \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMAY 6\, 8 P.M. (discussion)\nLITTLE PALESTINE: DIARY OF A SEIGE\nDuring the Syrian civil war\, the district of Yarmouk\, home to thousands of Palestinians\, became the scene of dramatic and ferocious fighting. Little Palestine: Diary of a Siege is a film that follows the destiny of civilians during the brutal sieges\, imposed by the Syrian regime\, that took place in the wake of the battles. With his camera\, Abdallah Al-Khatib composes a love song to a place that proudly resists the atrocities of war \nLearn more here. \nwith host: \nspecial guest: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMAY 20\, 8 P.M. SUMMARY:Sanaa Seif with Sharif Abdel Kouddous (in person)
DESCRIPTION:Making this Seattle visit as part of a national\, in-person tour around the U.S. are Egyptian activist\, film editor\, and one-time political prisoner Sanaa Seif\, along with Cairo-based independent journalist Sharif Abdel Kouddous. They will be discussing the extraordinary book of Sanaa Seif’s imprisoned brother Alaa Abd El-Fattah’s writings\, You Have Not Been Defeated: Selected Works (Seven Stories). Alaa Abd El-Fattah is probably the highest profile political prisoner currently being held in Egypt – one of many\, however\, including Sanaa Seif herself until recently. \n“You can’t jail a revolution. Alaa Abd el-Fattah is proof. These essays\, many handwritten and smuggled from a prison cell\, breathe life into the 2011 moment\, what shaped its revolutionary possibilities and terrible betrayals. This book is a memory of Tahrir Square that still reverberates like a heartbeat throughout the world.”– Nick Estes. \n“In a totalitarian system where even ideas are punishable with imprisonment\, this collection of essays from one of Egypt’s most high-profile political prisoners is like an oasis in a desolate landscape. Part manifesto\, part memoir\, and part record of some of Abd El-Fattah’s trial scenes that are more than worthy of Kafka\, the book contains passages smuggled out from Cairo’s infamous Tora prison.”– Ruth Michaelson\, The Guardian. \n“Written with blood and fire\, You Have Not Yet Been Defeated is a brilliant and devastating testament by one of Egypt’s great revolutionaries.”– Molly Crabapple. \nThis is scheduled to be a live/in-person program at Elliott Bay Book Company. Registration is optional.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: You Have Not Yet Been Defeated with Sanaa Seif and Sharif Abdel Kouddous (Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:The Palestinian Feminist Collective proudly presents\n\nYOU HAVE NOT YET BEEN DEFEATED\nA book talk with Egyptian revolutionary\, Sanaa Seif & renowned\, independent Egyptian journalist\, Sharif Abdel Kouddous\n\nFriday\, April 29th\n6:00 pm EDT // 5:00 pm CDT // 3:00 pm PDT\nREGISTER HERE\n\nThe PFC invites you to a virtual book talk with Egyptian revolutionary\, Sanaa Seif\, former political prisoner and sister of Alaa Abd el-Fattah\, as she discusses his long anticipated book\, “YOU HAVE NOT YET BEEN DEFEATED” with renowned\, independent Egyptian journalist\, Sharif Abdel Kouddous.\n\nThis is a solidarity event with political prisoners in Egypt in affirmation of the power of feminist organizing in the face of repression and counter-revolution in Egypt. The PFC stands with our Egyptian comrades and people across the globe facing the heteropatriarchal\, imperial systems of militarized policing\, prisons\, and repression.\n\n\n\nYOU HAVE NOT YET BEEN DEFEATED embodies ideas of protest and freedom of expression from the world-renowned Egyptian political prisoner and activist collected in English for the first time. With a foreword by Naomi Klein.\n\n“The text you are holding is living history.” — Naomi Klein\, from the forward\nAlaa Abd el-Fattah is arguably the most high-profile political prisoner in Egypt\, if not the Arab world\, rising to international prominence during the revolution of 2011. A fiercely independent thinker who fuses politics and technology in powerful prose\, an activist whose ideas represent a global generation that has only known struggle against a failing system\, a public intellectual with the rare courage to offer personal\, painful honesty\, Alaa’s written voice came to symbolize much of what was fresh\, inspiring and revolutionary about the uprisings that have defined the last decade. Collected here for the first time in English is a selection of his essays\, social media posts\, and interviews from 2011 until the present. He has spent the majority of those years in prison\, where many of these pieces were written. Together\, they present not only a unique account from the frontline of a decade of global upheaval but a catalog of ideas about other futures those upheavals could yet reveal.
