SUMMARY:Seffarine
DESCRIPTION:At a momentous first meeting at a coffee shop in Fez\, Moroccan vocalist Lamiae Naki and multi-instrumentalist Nat Hulskamp composed their first song and decided to get married. Brought together by their deep knowledge of the music of both sides of the Straits of Gibraltar – Spanish flamenco and Moroccan Arabic music – they created Seffarine.\nSeffarine takes its name from the ancient metalworking square in Fez\, which is famous for the complex rhythms that ring out from the blacksmiths’ hammers\, and where Lamiae’s family is well known as masters of the tradition. Seffarine’s music embraces and extends Morocco’s musical collision between Arabic\, Iberian and West African cultures\, forging vibrant original music deeply rooted in their backgrounds in flamenco guitar\, oud and Arab Andalusian music. Nat and Lamiae built an international quintet bringing in all star musicians from Iran\, the US and Spain\, who infuse the sound with textured instrumentation and inspired improvisation. Sweeping kamancheh (Persian spike-fiddle) ornamentation plays off gritty bass grooves and explosive flamenco footwork\, with Lamiae’s fluidly riveting voice at the center\, sending up sheets of cascading Andalusi melodies punctuated by the catchy hooks of North African Chaabi\, sung in her native Moroccan Arabic. Their sound has taken them around the world\, from touring Australia and Europe to receiving grants to study Ottoman singing in Turkey\, to the Rainforest World Music Festival in Borneo\, to recording with top flamenco musicians in Spain such as Diego del Morao and Latin Grammy winner Antonio Rey.

SUMMARY:Material Identities: Regional Dress in Late Ottoman Syria
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Lecture Registration\n\nMaterial Identities: Regional Dress in Late Ottoman Syria \nDate: Friday\, March 13\, 2026\nTime: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM EST\nLocation: Online\, Zoom link will be emailed at 10am EST on event day\nInstructor: Wafa Ghnaim\, Dress Historian\, Researcher & Educator\nRegistration Fee: Sliding scale \nDescription: This lecture examines the regional styles of embroidered traditional dress produced within the geographic boundaries of present-day Syria during the late Ottoman period\, roughly 1850–1922. It centers on historical garments from various villages\, towns\, and desert regions across Syria\, as well as the textile traditions that shaped them. Participants will learn about Syria’s role as a major center of textile production\, including the rise and decline of its fabric industries and the historic cloth types most commonly used in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The lecture surveys distinctive village and regional styles\, with attention to materials\, structure\, and surface design\, beginning in the Northern Galilee and extending into southern Syria and beyond. \nThe presentation draws on surviving garments\, visual documentation\, and the work of leading scholars in the field of Syrian dress history. This research is informed by the expertise of Aida Dalati\, Anne Marie Weiss-Armush\, Hanan Munayyer\, and other leading collectors and historians in the field. Through this focused visual and historical review\, the lecture situates Syrian dress within its social\, economic\, and cultural contexts\, highlighting how regional identity was expressed as a broad regional tradition shared by communities of the eastern Mediterranean over centuries. While many have argued that the cultural knowledge of Syrian dress styles is extinct\, Wafa argues that new digital archives led by a new generation are ensuring its survival and revival. \n

SUMMARY:Global Rhythms: Saha Gnawa
DESCRIPTION:Where Morocco Meets NYC: Refined via late-night sessions at LunÀtico in Bed-Stuy\, Brooklyn\, Saha Gnawa explores trance-like states through its intuitive interplay\, allowing ancestral rhythms and melodies to drift into unknown territories. What emerges is both an authentic performance of centuries-old Gnawa tradition and a bold step into new dimensions of sound — where traditional song forms dissolve into ecstatic dance tracks laced with subtle electronics.

DESCRIPTION:He Never Dies: The Films of Kalil Haddad (18+) \nKalil Haddad\, 2020-2025\, Canada\, 70m\, English \nNorthwest Film Forum is excited to present the Seattle debut of the work of Toronto-based filmmaker Kalil Haddad. Seamlessly moving between narrative\, documentary\, and archival approaches to filmmaking\, Haddad’s films interrogate notions of desire and exploitation across lines of sexuality\, race\, and class in order to uncover often hidden truths about how we use and abuse those that we see\, but often do not know. \nCurated and presented by Kalil Haddad\, Tony Nguyen\, and Cole Wilder. \nFRI MAR 20: 7.30 PM \nSAT MAR 21: 4.30 PM \nSUN MAR 22: 4.30 PM\, 7.30 PM \nFRI MAR 27: 7.30 PM

SUMMARY:Paradiso 17 with author Hannah Lillith Assadi
DESCRIPTION:Hannah Lillith Assadi\nWednesday March 25th\, 2026 @ 7:00PM – 8:00 PM\n\n\n\n\nNovelist Hannah Lillith Assadi visits the store for her latest book Paradiso 17\, inspired by the life of her late Palestinian father\, which follows one man’s restless search for home the world over\, as the pendulum of fate swings between loss and life\, grief and euphoria\, regret and hope. \nRegistration is not required\, but helps us anticipate audience size. If you’d like to RSVP\, please do so here! \n“There is something miraculous about Paradiso 17\, about the poetry that seems to guide every sentence of this exquisite novel. With stunning intimacy\, Hannah Lillith Assadi has crafted an unforgettable story about the many stunted afterlives of hyphenated belonging. In this book live some of the most complex characters I’ve read in a long time\, and a deeply nuanced exploration of exile as both event and inheritance.” —Omar El Akkad\, author of One Day\, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This \n“Paradiso 17 is remarkable. It’s a novel of unearthing\, a story of quiet explosions\, of memories lost and recovered. It’s urgent and necessary. Read it as an intimate family tale\, as mythos\, or as history—but read it\, read it\, read it.” —Rabih Alameddine\, author of The Wrong End of the Telescope \nAll his life\, exile has been the shadow stitched to the sole of Sufien’s shoe. \nBorn in Palestine on the precipice of 1948’s Nakba\, Sufien is forced to leave the only home he’s ever known\, the one on the hill with a beautiful blue door. This is the precise moment when time stops making sense. He spends the rest of his life propelled forward\, always on the way—although in search of what\, he is never quite sure. In the dusty\, oil-rich desert of Kuwait\, he meets his first love and decides he must leave his family. In a small Italian university town\, he spends his youth wrapped up in the sweet promise of the West and the forgetful assurance of wine. When life takes him to a gritty New York\, he discovers his true vocation and falls for a Jewish woman born into a wholly different world. Finally\, he finds himself recalled to the wild\, vast open skies of the desert\, in Arizona. \nSufien’s life spans friendships lost and maintained\, a stint selling leathers at a tanner’s stall\, the ineffable company of cats\, and the freedom of the open road\, the glowing pride of fatherhood\, Sufi myths\, prophetic dreams\, and visions of the afterlife—and always\, always\, no matter how far he chases joy\, the sweet\, treacherous song of a balcony urging him to fly\, to fall\, to fall. The lyrical pages of Paradiso 17 weave in and out of time and space\, beginning at the end and ending at the beginning. They are haunting\, haunted with grief\, struck through\, as Dante once wrote\, with “the arrow that the bow of exile / shoots first\,” and yet they throb with light—not just the light that Sufien sees as he approaches his own end\, but the brilliant light of a life lived. \nLike all of our dead\, Sufien still speaks\, the book begins. Listen\, this is his story. \nHannah Lillith Assadi\, a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 honoree\, teaches fiction at the Columbia University School of the Arts and the Pratt Institute. She is the author of Sonora\, which received the Rosenthal Family Foundation Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and was a finalist for the PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Fiction. Her second novel\, The Stars Are Not Yet Bells\, was a New Yorker and NPR best book of 2022. Raised in Arizona\, she lives in Brooklyn\, New York.
