SUMMARY:In Plain Sight: Various Artists including Hayv Kahraman (Iraq\, born 1981)
DESCRIPTION:This gallery is closed due to COVID-19 until further notice.\n\nThis group exhibition engages artists whose work addresses narratives\, communities\, and histories that are typically hidden or invisible in our public space (both conceptually and literally defined). The presenting artists approach the exhibition’s theme from a range of directions\, varying across all media as well as aesthetic and conceptual contexts. Works encompass deliberately activist endeavors and direct documentation; the unpacking of individual histories excluded due to race\, ethnicity\, or class; explorations of coded language for protection\, secrecy\, or both; the illumination of invisible or covert systems of labor\, exploitation\, and capitalist control; and translation through surreal\, oblique\, or fantastical frameworks.\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition expands into the entire museum\, including interstitial/transitional spaces\, and activates external sites through programs\, performances\, and community partnerships. Site becomes a material through which what we have heretofore considered the complete\, authoritative story is expanded and retold.\nParticipating artists: Sadie Barnette (U.S.\, born 1984)\, Sanford Biggers (U.S.\, born 1970)\, Andrea Bowers (U.S.\, born 1965)\, Tom Burr (U.S.\, born 1963)\, Fiona Connor (New Zealand\, born 1981)\, william cordova (Peru\, born 1971)\, Beatriz Cortez (El Salvador\, born 1970)\, Hayv Kahraman (Iraq\, born 1981)\, Nicole Miller (U.S.\, born 1982)\n\n\n\nHenry Art Gallery\nNovember 23\, 2019 – April 26\, 2020*

SUMMARY:ArabishWay Circle Time Series (2019-2020)
DESCRIPTION:Bring your little one down and join Laila for a circle time that will have songs\, stories and activities all in Arabic followed by snack and craft time. \nWe will meet once each month and each month will have a theme: (September: alphabet\, October: numbers\, etc.) and the books\, songs and activities will correlate with this theme. \nCircle time is great for non-native speakers who want to expose their child to another language as well as native speakers who want to expose their children to Arabic outside of the home.  It’s also been a great place for people to meet and get to know other families. \nWe will have the meeting room from 10am – 11:30am.  The circle time will run from 10:15am-10:45am followed by informal snack/craft which can be done in class or completed at home. \nRepeats monthly on the 2nd Thursday of the month. \nThis circle time is geared towards toddlers and early preschool but all ages are welcome and will enjoy the activities!

SUMMARY:Community Reads: Freedom is a Constant Struggle\, by Angela Davis
DESCRIPTION:Community Reads: Freedom is a Constant Struggle\, by Angela Davis \nCommunity Reads:  Freedom is a Constant Struggle\, by Angela Davis. \n“In these newly collected essays\, interviews\, and speeches\, world-renowned activist and scholar Angela Davis illuminates the connections between struggles against state violence and oppression throughout history and around the world. \nReflecting on the importance of black feminism\, intersectionality\, and prison abolitionism for today’s struggles\, Davis discusses the legacies of previous liberation struggles\, from the Black Freedom Movement to the South African anti-Apartheid movement. She highlights connections and analyzes today’s struggles against state terror\, from Ferguson to Palestine. \nFacing a world of outrageous injustice\, Davis challenges us to imagine and build the movement for human liberation. And in doing so\, she reminds us that ‘Freedom is a constant struggle.’” (-book jacket) \nWe invite everyone on our shared campus to join in this academic year as we read Angela Davis’ book\, Freedom is a Constant Struggle. Each quarter we’ll focus on different chapters and offer related materials to explore from a variety of disciplines and artistic forms of expression (poetry\, art\, fiction\, film\, etc.) based on themes. \nUW Bothell LB1 – Library\, LB1-205 \nEvent Sponsors: UWB/CC Campus Library

SUMMARY:For Sama - movie - Northwest Film Forum

SUMMARY:Malaka Gharib: I Was Their American Dream
DESCRIPTION:I Was Their American Dream is at once a coming-of-age story and a reminder of the thousands of immigrants who come to America in search for a better life for themselves and their children. The daughter of parents with unfulfilled dreams themselves\, Malaka navigated her childhood chasing her parents’ ideals\, learning to code-switch between her family’s Filipino and Egyptian customs\, adapting to white culture to fit in\, crushing on skater boys\, and trying to understand the tension between holding onto cultural values and trying to be an all-American kid. \nMalaka Gharib’s triumphant graphic memoir brings to life her teenage antics and illuminates earnest questions about identity and culture\, while providing thoughtful insight into the lives of modern immigrants and the generation of millennial children they raised. Malaka’s story is a heartfelt tribute to the American immigrants who have invested their future in the promise of the American dream. \nMALAKA GHARIB is an artist\, journalist\, and writer based in Washington\, D.C. She is the founder of The Runcible Spoon\, a food zine\, and the co-founder of the D.C. Art Book Fair. She lives in a row house with her husband Darren and her 9-year-old rice cooker.

SUMMARY:Write Our Democracy: Writers Respond
DESCRIPTION:Join Write Our Democracy and Hugo House for an event elevating voices in a time when so many are being silenced. On this night\, writers and artists will respond to our political infrastructure\, constructing\, erasing\, and writing over documentation that grounds systems of oppression. This event celebrates free speech and provides a base for all artists seeking ways to interact and speak out for a compassionate and just democracy. Featured artists include Dujie Tahat\, Catalina Cantú\, Raúl Sánchez\, Lena Khalaf Tuffaha\, and Kristiana Kahakauwila. \nInitially an international protest to the 2016 Inauguration\, Write Our Democracy has since been dedicated to promoting the importance of the spoken word and writing as activism in a time when freedom of speech and the humanities have been under threat of constraint. Each reading in the series focuses on how literature can contribute to a community of liberation through language and truth. \nThis event is free and open to the public. \n\n
