SUMMARY:Conner Habib at Powell Books (Portland)
DESCRIPTION:An English teacher is gaslit by his charismatic high school bully in a tense story of deception\, manipulation\, and murder from Conner Habib\, host of the Against Everyone with Conner Habib podcast. Single father Todd is relaxing at the beach with his son\, Anthony\, when he catches sight of a man approaching from the water’s edge. As the man draws closer\, Todd recognizes him as Jack\, who bullied Todd relentlessly in their teenage years but now seems overjoyed to have “run into” his old friend. Jack suggests a meal to catch up. And can he spend the night? What follows is a fast-paced story of obsession and cunning. As Jack invades Todd’s life\, pain and intimidation from the past unearth knife-edge suspense in the present. Set in a small town on the New England coast\, Habib’s debut introduces characters trapped in isolation by the expansive woods and the encroaching ocean\, their violence an expression of repressed desire and the damage it can inflict. Both gruesome and tender\, Hawk Mountain (W. W. Norton) offers a compelling look at how love and hate are indissoluble\, intertwined until the last breath.\n\n\nPlease note: Signed preordered books will be shipped to you and are not available for pick-up in the store the night of the event (but if you’re planning to attend\, don’t worry! His prose is as brutal as it is profound and beautiful…. A brutal and gorgeous tale of manipulation\, control\, and desire.” Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)\nReview\n“Conner Habib’s debut novel is a bleak\, dark adrenaline rush.” Clive Barker\nReview\n“A deeply disturbing yet\, somehow\, soaring novel I won’t soon forget. I couldn’t look away\, even when I was looking from between my fingers.” Paul Tremblay\, author of A Head Full of Ghosts and The Pallbearers Club\nReview\n“The opening lines of Hawk Mountain plummet you into an atmosphere of creeping dread and precarious restraint that won’t let up until the final\, shocking moments.” Caitlin Doughty\, bestselling author of Smoke Gets In Your Eyes\nAbout the Author\nConner Habib hosts the podcast Against Everyone with Conner Habib\, which features conversations with artists\, intellectuals\, and countercultural figures\, and covers topics as wide-ranging as punk rock\, philosophy\, pornography\, and occultism. SUMMARY:ARCE DC: Excavating a Frontier Fortress: Uronarti\, Sudan
DESCRIPTION:The fortifications at Uronarti in Lower Nubia were among a string of massive monuments built by the kings of Egypt’s 12th dynasty when they established control over this gold-bearing region. \n\nWhile the fortresses were imposing military monuments\, they were also locations of interaction between the Egyptian garrison and local Nubian populations\, as well as places of domestic and production activities. Since 2012\, a joint mission of Brown University and Swansea University has been conducting an excavation and survey at Uronarti and the surrounding area to address questions of both colonialism and daily life at this outpost. \n\nThis talk will present recent finds from that project\, including one of the best-preserved ancient Egyptian pottery kilns yet known\, a settlement of stone huts outside the fortress\, and construction layers from the earliest phase of the site that highlight the impressive engineering necessary to conquer this forbidding landscape. \n\nEmail us at arce.dc.news at gmail dot com for a link to register for \nthis event. \n\nRegistration is required\nPresented by: Dr. Laurel Bestock \n\n1:00 PM EDTWashington\, DC

SUMMARY:Zeina Hashem Beck (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Much-praised Lebanese poet Zeina Hashem Beck makes this welcome visit by virtual means to read from her newly published third full-length collection\, O (Penguin Poets). Writing in Arabic and English\, she cuts to the quick here\, in form\, range\, breadth – and breath. \n“O is so full of life\, of music and passion for life. In ghazals\, odes\, revolution songs and invocations of O the world comes vividly alive: ‘I carry a name & many cities\,’ writes Hashem Beck\, as her poems unfold the abundance of our world. Abundance\, yes: so much tenderness\, so much passion in these pages: just one language can’t contain it all\, so the poet gives us ‘Duets\,’ joining Arabic and English in the same stanza. The lyricism is a vehicle of emotional impact … Hashem Beck’s prayer isn’t shy of calling for revolution\, of asking ‘to occupy the streets\, bring the tires\, the sofas\, the drums\, the blaring cars.’ Zeina Hashem Beck’s prayer isn’t afraid of stories\, of new music on your balconies. Listen. Her O brims with the world.” —Ilya Kaminsky. \n“Western readers often consume books by international authors like perverse anthropologists\, scanning for a word or phrase that buttresses their ill-informed preconceptions\, cudgeling a writer’s meticulously woven lyric into vapid social generality. Zeina Hashem Beck’s O rebukes this tendency explicitly in an early poem: “I’m tired of metaphors about peace. // I prefer dark chocolate in the morning\, / & a good window.” And then throughout the collection\, she rebukes it with her truly undeniable poems—rhymes braid across multiple languages\, intricate forms fracture under the weight of their subjects. In one unforgettable piece\, a subtle incantation ends on the name of a flower that looses itself across the page like so many petals. Unforgettable\, undeniable—these are the words I keep coming back to with O. Anyone who reads it in earnest will emerge better made.” —Kaveh Akbar. \nZeina Hashem Beck’s other collections include Louder Than Hearts\, To Live in Autumn\, and the chapbooks 3arabi Song and There Was and How Much There Was. \n\nVirtually hosted by Elliott Bay Book Company.

SUMMARY:Virtual US Book Launch Event - "Oranges from Jaffa\," by Nadine Sayegh
DESCRIPTION:Oranges from Jaffa – A true story about the end of the golden age of Palestine\nPlease join us for a conversation with and a reading of book excerpts by the book author\, Nadine Sayegh\, who is an Austrian Palestinian with Jaffa roots. \n\n\n\n\nJaffa Oranges is a family history\, a novel against oblivion. The book presents the coming of age story of Nicolas Sayegh\, a Palestinian Tom-Sawyer-type\, who\, together with his friends\, roams the sun-drenched neighborhood streets of Jaffa in 1947 – an ancient Arab city\, the commercial capital of Palestine at the time\, fragrant with the smell of orange blossoms. Nicolas is always up to childhood adventures and mischief\, exploring his parents’ magical orange groves\, parading through his neighborhood like a cowboy on a donkey’s back\, or sneaking out with his best friend Suhail to the local Alhambra cinema. The story poetically portrays the daily life of a well-to-do Christian Palestinian family and the people of Jaffa as a whole\, giving insights into the local Palestinian culture that was prevalent at the time. However\, Nicolas’ carefree days and boyhood ended abruptly in the spring of 1948\, when the state of Israel was created and most inhabitants of Jaffa were driven out by the Zionist forces.

SUMMARY:Author: Salma El-Wardany (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:This midday Saturday virtual reading sends us over the Atlantic to wherever Egyptian/Irish poet\, novelist\, spoken word performer and BBC broadcaster Salma El-Wardany may be. She is here with her much-anticipated\,  brilliant first novel\, These Impossible Things (Grand Central). \n“These Impossible Things is an addictive portrait of three Muslim friends moving through a pivotal time in womanhood\, caught between expectation and possibility\, hungry to earn wisdom of their own. Salma El-Wardany deftly reveals searing and poignant truths about the female experience\, ones so rarely confronted in fiction. What a gift to be inside this author’s mind through the pages of her beautiful and memorable writing.”—Ashley Audrain. \n“Salacious\, incisive\, and unapologetically Muslim\, Salma El-Wardany’s bold and brilliant story doesn’t shy away from the taboo subjects of religion and sex. These Impossible Things shows that Muslim women are multifaceted and complex despite the dearth of representation we are allowed.”—Blair Imani. \nVirtually hosted by Elliott Bay Book Company.

SUMMARY:P&P Live! & DCPL Present Zahra Marwan | WHERE BUTTERFLIES FILL THE SKY

Beyond the Book is made possible by the generous support of the DC Public Library Foundation. More information about Beyond the Book can be found here. \nThe first 50 people to register for the event and select the “Free Event Admission + Free Book” option at registration will receive a complimentary copy of the book for their home library (one book per family\, please). Recipients of the complimentary copy will pick their book up in the Children’s department at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library\, 901 G St. NW\, Washington\, DC\, beginning Thursday\, June 30. Please note that complimentary book copies must be picked up by Saturday\, July 9. These books are generously donated by the District of Columbia Public Library Foundation. \nAbout the book: \nAs a child\, Zahra Marwan left the only home she’d ever known in Kuwait for a strange and unfamiliar land named New Mexico. Her father – and as such\, her siblings and herself – were deemed stateless citizens of Kuwait\, unable to obtain an education\, healthcare or even get married. Leaving behind the familiar turquoise of the sea and the faded greens and yellows of the desert\, Zahra is surprised to find similarities in the magical vistas of her new home. Although she misses the comfort of her aunties and the beauty of Kuwait’s butterfly-filled skies\, New Mexico surprises with its own wondrous landscapes\, and new friends who help Zahra feel like she belongs. \nZahra Marwan was born in Kuwait\, and moved to Albuquerque with her family when she was a child. She studied visual arts in France and works primarily in Illustration. She currently lives in Albuquerque\, New Mexico\, and works in her studio at the Harwood Art Center. Her watercolor-and-ink illustrations incorporate Kuwaiti tendencies into her daily life. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/pp-live-dcpl-present-zahra-marwan-where-butterflies-fill-the-sky-tickets-353956171437

This legacy has deeply influenced her career\, becoming a leading educator in the field\, the first-ever Palestinian embroidery instructor at the Smithsonian Museum\, and collections specialist at the Museum of the Palestinian People in Washington\, D.C. Inspired by generations of fibre artists\, The Tatreez Institute continues the rich traditions of embroidery\, textile\, and storytelling of Palestine\, the Palestinian diaspora\, and Greater Syria from the United States.Wafa coined the title “Tatreez & Tea” in 2015 when she set out to write a book that preserved the meanings\, stories\, and patterns of Palestinian embroidery designs that she and her sisters had learned throughout their lives. \nDate: 28th June 2022 \nTime: 12 pm (NYC)\, 5 pm (London)\, 8 pm (Dubai) \nTickets: Donation \nStudents: If you are a student or member of academia please register here to receive your complimentary registration links. \nRegistering will not only give you access to the live session but also a recorded version to catch up on in your own time. \nBuy Tickets

SUMMARY:Online: Sulger-Gallery Exhibition Extension Alternative Museum of the Sudan
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of Amado Alfadni’s ‘Alternative Museum of the Sudan’ the exhibition has been extended and will remain on display at Sulger-Buel Gallery until the 31st of August 2022 and viewing is available by appointment only. \nThis solo exhibition highlights Alfadni’s deep research-based investigations into the forgotten silenced histories of the Sudan. The artist utilizes oral archives\, postcards\, photographs\, performances\, and mixed-media costumes to reveal the complex relationship between colonialism and Black Africa\, as well as the intermingled histories of Black Africa\, Egypt\, and North Africa. \nAbout the artist:\nBorn in 1976 in Cairo\, Amado Alfadni’s childhood was composed of two distinct environments: the Cairene Street and the Sudanese home. The relationship and the tension between these two cultures strongly influenced his views\, making him question the subject of identity with its related rhetoric\, as well as the variables of nation and ethnicity in his work. By working with forgotten historical events and referring to the current state of things\, he challenges the power dynamics between the individual and authority on both the social and political levels. He gives a voice to the ethnic minority\, with a focus on research and documentation of ignored happenings. \nAbout the curator:\nNajlaa El-Ageli\, an architect (AA Dip) with over twenty years of experience in the profession\, founded Noon Arts Projects in 2012. A small private arts foundation\, with a mission to bring the best of contemporary art from the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region\, from both emerging and established artists\, and expose it to the world stage. Collaborating with art venues and foundations\, she has curated over 20 exhibitions in the UK\, Spain\, Malta\, Italy\, and the US. \n

SUMMARY:Donia Jarrar + Friends wsg Huda Asfour
DESCRIPTION:Donia Jarrar + Friends wsg Huda Asfour\n8 p.m. ET Saturday\, June 25\, 2022\nIn-person at The Annex @ AANM OR Virtual Livestream\n$12 Museum Members | $10 Students | $15 General Public | $5 Livestream \nJoin artist-in-residence Donia Jarrar for the premiere of her new evening-length work\, BUTCHER\, produced during her residency\, and featuring poet and writer Yasmine Rukia\, and dancers Ava Ansari and Zaza. Huda Asfour will open the concert with her signature solo oud improvisations. There will also be a talkback with the artists after the show. \nBUTCHER is a loosely autobiographical concept album based on Jarrar’s own experiences with domestic and intimate partner violence and sexual assault\, in which she takes on the persona of a vigilante and antihero doling out punishments through the power wielded to her via a sonic cleaver. Jarrar is not interested in playing nice. Rather\, she aims to explore what is possible when women\, non-binary people and queers of all genders defy\, disrupt and destroy the patriarchy through violent means and without mercy\, drawing inspiration from horror\, science-fiction and the erotic. \nCONTENT WARNING: This performance includes sensitive content on domestic violence\, sexual assault\, physical violence\, identity-based racial discrimination and harassment. There will also be the use of prop swords\, knives and cleavers and other edged and bladed weapons. While this performance is meant to be a healing space for survivors\, the artist acknowledges that this content may be difficult for some audience members.

SUMMARY:Shall I Compare You to a Summer's Day? (Bashtaalak sa’at) [In-Person Only]
DESCRIPTION:About the film:\n\n\n\n(Mohammad Shawky Hassan\, Egypt\, Lebanon & Germany\, 2022\, 66 min\, in English and Arabic with English subtitles) \n** US premiere! Co-presented by Goethe Pop Up Seattle & Three Dollar Bill Cinema ** \nIn celebration of Seattle Pride\, we are proud to partner with Three Dollar Bill Cinema to present the US premiere of Shall I Compare You to a Summer’s Day\, the arty\, sensual\, and short first feature film by Egyptian video artist and filmmaker Mohammad Shawky Hassan. Imaginatively shot in blue-screen studios in Berlin\, Shall I Compare You is set in a time that is part tongue-in-cheek mythical past\, part relentlessly contemporary\, all queer\, and all Cairo. When our mistress of ceremonies (the Egyptian singer\, actor\, and powerful diva Donia Massoud) undertakes to tell the story of a queer romance\, she is diverted endlessly among the intersecting and diverging tales of the men of Club Scheherezade. This storybook Club is in an Egypt where gay and queer people can date\, kiss\, argue\, and hold hands without (or almost without) fear. The fact that this freedom must be fantastical is the determinedly cheerful movie’s sucker punch \nThe movie’s light tone belies an artistic seriousness of intent\, and the everyday intimacies of the men before the screen are given the weight of legend by fable-like chapter titles from the Arabian Nights and by song\, mostly decontextualized Egyptian pop\, sung earnestly by the men themselves or by Massoud.  Slyly carnal\, Shall I Compare You almost literally goes inside relationships\, hookups\, and the space between while finding wonderful opportunities for solidarity among its characters \nIn the film’s slippery\, giddily artificial structure\, Hassan employs what has been called a queer dramaturgy\, characterized by a subversive joy in digression and sexuality not unrelated\, perhaps\, to that of the original Arabian Nights. Shall I Compare You brings a gloriously peculiar perspective to a complex of relationships that are limned by Grindr\, tempted and troubled by polyamory\, and full\, always\, of sincerity and heart.
