SUMMARY:Movie: 1982 at SIFF
DESCRIPTION:Lebanon | 2019 | 100 min. | Oualid Mouaness \n\n\n\n1982 is a life-affirming coming-of-age tale set at an idyllic school in Lebanon’s mountains on the eve of a looming invasion. It unfolds over a single day and follows an 11-year-oldboy’s relentless quest to profess his love to a girl in his class. As the invasion encroaches on Beirut\, it upends the day\, threatening the entire country and its cohesion. Within the microcosm of the school\, the film draws a harrowing portrait of a society torn between its desire for love and peace and the ideological schisms unraveling its seams. \nIn his debut feature\, Oualid Mouaness delivers an ode to innocence in which he revisits one of the most cataclysmic moments in Lebanon’s history through the lens of a child and his vibrant imagination. It demonstrates the complexities of love and war\, and the resilience of the human spirit. \n\n\n\nDirector:Oualid Mouaness\nPrincipal Cast:Nadine Labaki\, Mohamad Dalli\, Rodrigue Sleiman\, Aliya Khalidi\nCountry:Lebanon\, France\, Norway\, Qatar\, USA\nYear:2019\nRunning Time:100 min.\nAwards:TIFF19 Netpac Award\, Grand Prix Cannes Écrans Juniors 2021\, Oscars 2020 Official Selection (International Feature Film)\nLanguage:Arabic\, English\nHas Subtitles:Yes\nUS Distributor:Tricycle Logic (theatrical)\nInternational Sales:House Of Film

I am in the process of working with TERN to set up a spice business called Bereoa here selling my homemade Z’atar\, Aleppo 7 Spice and Turkish Delight. I hope to launch Bereoa in Summer 2021 and to continue teaching my Syrian cookery classes. To guarantee your spot on a cookery class we recommend using a debit or credit card. \nPlease note\, we only process refunds and ticket transfers if we are notified 7 days before the class takes place.

SUMMARY:Movie (streaming) : Je Veux Voir + Barmeh
DESCRIPTION:The screenings presented in August highlight films by Hadjithomas and Joreige which have to do with vision and perception in post-war Lebanon. In Je Veux Voir (I Want to See)\, the filmmakers travel to Beirut with iconic French actress Catherine Deneuve. In the film\, she meets with artist and actor Rabih Mroué\, and together\, the two drive through the regions of Lebanon devastated by the 2006 war\, areas that remain inaccessible to most citizens. Through the presence and meeting of these two stars\, the filmmakers hope to find the beauty in Lebanon which the eye can no longer perceive.\n\nBarmeh (Rounds) is a video featuring Rabih Mroué\, filmed driving through the streets of the city. Beirut is evoked through the driver’s stories and through sound\, but the city is never seen; it is rendered invisible in an overexposed whiteness. Like his driving\, Mroué’s stories spin in a circle. He is like a ghost\, haunting the streets of a city where a reconstruction project is in a post-Civil War period.\n\nAvailable virtually US ONLY August 25–28\, 2022. TICKETS ARE EXTREMELY LIMITED. TICKETS

SUMMARY:(Live and In person) SHOP EVENTS STAFF PICKS ABOUT US MY ACCOUNT CONTACT Claire Schwartz\, Gabrielle Bates\, Lena Khalaf Tuffaha
DESCRIPTION:A Seattle visit and a remarkable new debut by New York-based poet Claire Schwartz helps occasion what would be an excellent evening of work here as she is joined by esteemed Seattle poets Gabrielle Bates and Lena Khalaf Tuffaha. Claire Schwartz\,  who is poetry editor of Jewish Currents\, has a compelling first book out from Graywolf\, Civil Service. \n“The power of this book is in its uncontrollable private will to imagine against the public failure of imagination. The poet dismembers our political reality into the double-edged lines\, into the bare and ashamed symbols and silences. Brutal and coy\, Claire Schwartz creates a scream out of irony and a rhythm out of the four corners of the page.”—Valzhyna Mort. \n“We’ve all heard the cliché ‘poems are bombs.’ But Claire Schwartz’s incendiaries whisper hard truths and harder questions\, beckoning us closer\, seeping gently into our consciousness before exploding the passive and placid thinking that allow us to go about our ‘normal’ lives. Civil Service shines a bright light onto a dark world ruled by property\, prisons\, patriarchy\, and profit.”—Robin D. G. Kelley. \nGabrielle Bates has her debut poetry collection\, Judas Goat coming from Tin House Books in 2023\, works at Open Books: A Poem Emporium and co-hosts the podcast The Poet Salon. \nLena Khalaf Tuffaha is most recently the Washington State Book Award winner of Water & Salt (Red Hen Press) and Arab in Newsland\, winner of the Two Sylvias Chapbook Prize. \nThis reading has now been moved to our friends and colleagues at Open Books: A Poem Emporium.

SUMMARY:The Crocodile Presents: Bombino\, Yogoman
DESCRIPTION:Four thousand years of living in a hostile environment taught the Tuareg that the will to survive with dignity intact is stronger than any external threat.  Bombino puts that sentiment to music\, writes its anthem\, and gives it a life of its own. He is known as being emblematic of the next generation of Tuareg\, a new voice of the Sahara and Sahel\, fusing traditional Berber rhythms with the energy of rock and roll and songs about peace. After years of drought\, rebellion\, and tyranny\, Bombino extols his audience to remember who they are\, but also realize who they can be. \n— \nBombino’s life and travels have exposed him to the problems facing his people. He has taken on the mission of helping the Tuareg community achieve equal rights\, peace\, maintain their rich cultural heritage and promote education. He is an advocate for teaching children the Tuareg language of Tamasheq\, the local Haoussa language as well as French and Arabic\, all of which he speaks fluently.  “We fought for our rights\,” remarks Bombino\, “but we have seen that guns are not the solution. We need to change our system. Our children must go to school and learn about their Tuareg identity.”

SUMMARY:ARCE DC: Moon Knight’s Egyptian Deities: Ammit and Taweret in Hollywood (online)
DESCRIPTION:https://www.eventbrite.com/e/moon-knights-egyptian-deities-ammit-and-taweret-in-hollywood-tickets-386146804487 \n\nDr Stuart T. Smith\, UCSB\, consultant to STARGATE\, presents a fun discussion on Ammit & Taweret and their role in Ancient Egypt’s religion \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nMarvel’s Moon Knight drew in many fans\, and introduced viewers to two Goddesses of the Ancient Egyptian pantheon. The Hippo Goddess\, Taweret\, in her role of protectress of women\, birthing mothers\, and infants\, was universally revered for several thousand years. Pregnant women wore amulets of her\, the meme of both having big bellies lasted thousands of years. Her image was carved on protective and household items. Images of her were also placed in tombs\, to help the deceased to live again in the afterlife. This interaction with dead souls in highlighted in Moon Knight. \nAmmit\, another Goddess who was part hippo\, was also part lion and part crocodile. She interacted with the dead in a different way. At the time of final judgement\, she crouched by the balance scales where the heart of the deceased was weighed for goodness against a feather\, while the spirit of the deceased changed a list of good things done in life\, and bad things avoided. If the heart outweighed the feather\, the soul was forbidden to enter the afterlife. Their unworthy heart was tossed to Ammit\, who devoured it. The soul died. Clearly\, as “Devourer of the Dead”\, and “Eater of Hearts”she was not a Goddess to mess with. In Moon Knight\, Ammit is elegantly costumed\, with a fabulous braid and – never shown dining. \nSince his 1994 consultancy with the Stargate film\, Dr. Stuart Smith of the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, has given many entertaining talks on the incorporation of Ancient Egyptian themes in Hollywood movies.

SUMMARY:Mona Awad in Conversation With Iain Reid
DESCRIPTION:From the author of Bunny\, which Margaret Atwood hails as “genius\,” comes a “wild\, and exhilarating” (Lauren Groff) novel about a theater professor who is convinced staging Shakespeare’s most maligned play will remedy all that ails her — but at what cost? Miranda Fitch’s life is a waking nightmare. The accident that ended her burgeoning acting career left her with excruciating chronic back pain\, a failed marriage\, and a deepening dependence on painkillers. And now\, she’s on the verge of losing her job as a college theater director. Determined to put on Shakespeare’s All’s Well That Ends Well\, the play that promised and cost her everything\, she faces a mutinous cast hellbent on staging Macbeth instead. Miranda sees her chance at redemption slip through her fingers. That’s when she meets three strange benefactors who have an eerie knowledge of Miranda’s past and a tantalizing promise for her future: one where the show goes on\, her rebellious students get what’s coming to them\, and the invisible doubted pain that’s kept her from the spotlight is made known. With prose Atwood has described as “no punches pulled\, no hilarities dodged… genius\,” Mona Awad has concocted her most potent\, subversive novel yet. All’s Well (Scribner/Marysue Rucci Books) is a “fabulous novel” (Mary Karr) about a woman at her breaking point and a formidable\, piercingly funny indictment of our collective refusal to witness and believe female pain. Awad will be joined in conversation by Iain Reid\, author of I’m Thinking of Ending Things.
