SUMMARY:Abdulrazak Gurnah — Afterlives — with Tope Folarin (LIVE and virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Upcoming Event\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, September 13\, 2022 – 7:00pm ET\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here for tickets to this in-person event! \nAt this in-person event (with a virtual attendance option)\, masks and proof of vaccination are required. Please review our health and safety protocols here. \nAbdulrazak Gurnah is the winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature. SUMMARY:P&P Live! Zoulfa Katouh | As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow with Sabaa Tahir (virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Salama Kassab was just a normal teenager living a normal life. But as revolution ignites Syria\, burning stronger and brighter with each day\, Salama recognizes the urgent need to seek safety outside of the country. Just a first year Pharmacy student\, she is asked to perform procedures way beyond her education at the local hospital\, where she witnesses firsthand the brutality of war. As she mourns family members lost in the violence\, and struggles to protect her pregnant sister-in-law\, her anxiety morphs into a physical manifestation in the form of an imaginary friend\, Khawf\, who provides comfort as her constant companion. But even as she is desperate to flee to safety\, she is conflicted by her loyalty to her country. This gripping work of speculative fiction mixes current events with elements of fantasy\, providing a heartbreaking glimpse into a country at war. Author Zoulfa Katouh draws from her own experiences as a Syrian to create a well-rounded and relatable protagonist and supporting characters. \nRegistrations that include the purchase of As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow will come with exclusive art cards while supplies last. \nPre-orders of As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow come with additional promotional items. Once you have purchased your copy\, CLICK HERE to complete the form and upload your receipt. SUMMARY:Movie: Costa Brava at SIFF
DESCRIPTION:Lebanon | 2021 | 107 min. | Mounia Akl \nFilmed just a couple of months after the August 2020 Beirut port explosion that claimed more than 200 lives\, this film references an earlier crisis of government corruption and ineptitude\, the 2015 Beirut garbage crisis\, when the streets of the city were congested with uncollected trash. But it functions as both a general-purpose lamentation for Lebanon as well as an allegory for our global climate catastrophe. Soraya (Nadine Labaki) and Walid Badri (Saleh Bakri) long ago fled the pollution and dysfunction of Beirut to live off the grid in an idyllic mountain hideaway. Raising their two young daughters and caring for Walid’s elderly mother\, they have abandoned the political action with which they used to face the country’s problems—until the country’s problems come looking for them. One day\, representatives of the government arrive in the valley where the Badris live to begin construction of a new landfill. (“Don’t worry\,” they assure them\, “This will be a ‘green’ landfill.”) The construction gradually encroaches on the family’s property\, and the pile of garbage grows bigger. As toxic smoke fills the air and the water in the swimming pool turns blood-red\, tensions rise within the family. “Where will we run away to this time?” asks Soraya. A famous singer and activist in her younger years\, she is ready to take up the struggle again. Walid is not so sure. — Justine Barda \n\n\n\nDirector:Mounia Akl\nPrincipal Cast:Nadine Labaki\, Saleh Bakri\, Nadia Charbel\, Ceana Restom\, Geana Restom\nCountry:Lebanon\, France\, Spain\, Sweden\, Denmark\, Norway\, Qatar\nYear:2021\nRunning Time:107 min.\nProducer:Myriam Sassine\, Georges Schoucair\nScreenplay:Mounia Akl\, Clara Roquet\nCinematographers:Joe Saade\nEditors:Carlos Marques-Marcet\, Cyril Aris\nMusic:Nathan Larson\nAwards:London Film Festival 2021 (Audience Award: Best Film)\nLanguage:Arabic\nHas Subtitles:Yes\nUS Distributor:Kino Lorber\nInternational Sales:mk2 Films

SUMMARY:Hidayah Virtual Book Club for LGBTQ+ Muslims and allies
DESCRIPTION:Hidayah presents our Virtual Book Club\, a place for LGBTQ+ Muslims and allies to read\, discuss books and socialise. \n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\n\nIn this book club\, we will discuss the latest chosen title\, We Wrote in Symbols: Love and Lust by Arab Women Writers\, edited by Selma Dabbagh. \nIt is a little-known secret that Arabic literature has a long tradition of erotic writing. Behind that secret lies another – that many of the writers are women. We Wrote in Symbols celebrates the works of 75 of these female writers of Arab heritage who articulate love and lust with artistry and skill. \nHere\, a wedding night takes an unexpected turn beneath a canopy of stars; a woman on the run meets her match in a flirtatious encounter at Dubai Airport; and a carnal awakening occurs in a Palestinian refugee camp. From a masked rendezvous in a circus\, to meetings in underground bars and unmade beds\, there is no such thing as a typical sexual encounter\, as this electrifying anthology shows. Powerfully conveying the complexities and intrigues of desire\, We Wrote in Symbols invites you to share these characters’ wildest fantasies and most intimate moments. \nTo get the most out of the session\, please ensure you have read the book ahead of time. We will be getting in to the key themes and how they represent what it is to be an LGBTQ+ Muslim/person of colour. \nWe have partnered with an LGBTQI+ founded and run bookstore – The Bookish Type\, who have kindly provided a 20% discount for any Hidayah Book Club members who wish to purchase each of our titles\, via their online and retail stores. Details will be provided with the order confirmation to each Hidayah Book Club event. \nIf you have any questions in the meantime\, please email Deenah on programs@hidayahlgbt.co.uk.

SUMMARY:Matthew Teller\, author of Nine Quarters of Jerusalem with Palestine Museum US
DESCRIPTION:The program begins at 12 Noon US EDT; 7:00 PM Palestine Time\nPlease join us for a session of open discussion about Palestinian topics.\nOur guest for this episode is Matthew Teller\, author of Nine Quarters of Jerusalem\, A New Biography of the Old City \nThis is a Virtual Book Launch \n\n\n\n\nAbout the Book\nThis unique\, absorbing biography of Jerusalem brings to light its overlooked histories and diverse contemporary voices. \nIn Jerusalem\, what you see and what is true are two different things. The Old City has never had “four quarters” as its maps proclaim. And beyond the crush and frenzy of its major religious sites\, many of its quarters are little known to visitors\, its people ignored and their stories untold. Nine Quarters of Jerusalem lets the communities of the Old City speak for themselves. Ranging from ancient past to political present\, it evokes the city’s depth and cultural diversity. \nMatthew Teller’s highly original “biography” features the Old City’s Palestinian and Jewish communities\, but also spotlights its Indian and African populations\, its Greek and Armenian and Syriac cultures\, its downtrodden Dom Gypsy families\, and its Sufi mystics. It discusses the sources of Jerusalem’s holiness and the ideas—often startlingly secular—that have shaped lives within its walls. It is an evocation of place through story\, led by the voices of Jerusalemites.

SUMMARY:Movie: 1982 at SIFF
DESCRIPTION:Lebanon | 2019 | 100 min. | Oualid Mouaness \n\n\n\n1982 is a life-affirming coming-of-age tale set at an idyllic school in Lebanon’s mountains on the eve of a looming invasion. It unfolds over a single day and follows an 11-year-oldboy’s relentless quest to profess his love to a girl in his class. As the invasion encroaches on Beirut\, it upends the day\, threatening the entire country and its cohesion. Within the microcosm of the school\, the film draws a harrowing portrait of a society torn between its desire for love and peace and the ideological schisms unraveling its seams. \nIn his debut feature\, Oualid Mouaness delivers an ode to innocence in which he revisits one of the most cataclysmic moments in Lebanon’s history through the lens of a child and his vibrant imagination. It demonstrates the complexities of love and war\, and the resilience of the human spirit. \n\n\n\nDirector:Oualid Mouaness\nPrincipal Cast:Nadine Labaki\, Mohamad Dalli\, Rodrigue Sleiman\, Aliya Khalidi\nCountry:Lebanon\, France\, Norway\, Qatar\, USA\nYear:2019\nRunning Time:100 min.\nAwards:TIFF19 Netpac Award\, Grand Prix Cannes Écrans Juniors 2021\, Oscars 2020 Official Selection (International Feature Film)\nLanguage:Arabic\, English\nHas Subtitles:Yes\nUS Distributor:Tricycle Logic (theatrical)\nInternational Sales:House Of Film
