SUMMARY:Author Event: Hala Alyan w/ Gabrielle Bates
DESCRIPTION:Hala Alyan w/ Gabrielle Bates\nThursday June 19th\, 2025 @ 7:00PM – 8:00 PM\n\n\n\n\nAward-winning Palestinian American poet and novelist Hala Alyan discusses her debut memoir\, I’ll Tell You When I’m Home\, in which Alyan’s experience of motherhood via surrogacy forces her to reckon with her own past\, and the legacy of her family’s exile and displacement\, all in the name of a new future. She’s joined alongside poet Gabrielle Bates. \nTo help us anticipate audience size\, please RSVP here! \nAfter a decade of yearning for parenthood\, years marked by miscarriage after miscarriage\, Hala Alyan makes the decision to use a surrogate. In this charged time\, she turns to the archetype of the waiting woman—the Scheherazade who tells stories to ensure another dawn—to confront her own narratives of motherhood\, love\, and inheritance. \nAs her baby grows in the body of another woman\, in another country\, Hala finds her own life unraveling—a husband who wants to leave; the cost of past traumas and addictions threatening to resurface; the city of her youth\, Beirut\, on the brink of crisis. She turns to family stories and communal myths: of grandmothers mapping their lives through Palestine\, Kuwait\, Syria\, Lebanon; of eradicated villages and invading armies; of places of refuge that proved only temporary; of men that left and women that stayed; of the contradictions of her own Midwestern childhood\, and adolescence in various Arab cities. \nMeanwhile\, as the baby grows from the size of a poppyseed to a grain of rice\, then a lime\, and beyond\, Hala gathers the stories that are her legacy\, setting down the ones that confine\, holding close those that liberate. It is emotionally charged\, painstaking work\, but now the stakes are higher: how to honor ancestors and future generations alike in the midst of displacement? How to impart love for those who are no longer here\, for places one can no longer touch? \nA stunningly lyrical and brutally honest quest for motherhood\, selfhood\, and peoplehood\, I’ll Tell You When I’m Home is a powerful story of unraveling and becoming\, of destruction and redemption\, and of homelands lost and recreated. \nHala Alyan is the author of the novels Salt Houses—winner of the Dayton Literary Peace Prize and the Arab American Book Award\, and a finalist for the Chautauqua Prize—and The Arsonists’ City\, a finalist for the Aspen Words Literary Prize. She is also the author of five highly acclaimed collections of poetry\, including The Twenty-Ninth Year and The Moon That Turns You Back. Her work has been published by The New Yorker\, The Academy of American Poets\, The New York Times\, The Guardian\, and Guernica. She lives in Brooklyn with her family\, where she works as a clinical psychologist and professor at New York University. \nGabrielle Bates‘s poetry collection Judas Goat (Tin House\, 2023) was named a Best Book of 2023 by NPR and Electric Lit and a finalist for the Washington State Book Award. In addition to freelance writing and editing\, she works for Open Books: A Poem Emporium; co-hosts the podcast The Poet Salon; and serves occasionally as faculty for the University of Washington Rome Center\, the Tin House Writers’ Workshops\, and Brooklyn Poets. The recipient of support from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and Artist Trust\, her work has appeared in the New Yorker\, Ploughshares\, The Believer\, Kenyon Review\, Sewanee Review\, and elsewhere. www.gabriellebat.es

SUMMARY:Movie: The Teacher
DESCRIPTION:The destruction of a Palestinian home by Israeli edict and the murder of a youth at the hands of an Israeli settler set the stage for even more shocks to come in THE TEACHER. Saleh Bakri is Basem\, an amiable educator who tries to steer the deceased boy’s younger brother Adam (Muhammad Abed Elrahman) from seeking revenge. At the same time\, Basem ignores his own advice\, maintaining ties with the resistance and involving himself in a hostage situation. He tries to keep his activities secret from Adam and his British girlfriend Lisa (Imogen Poots) but it becomes harder to maintain his silence when Israeli troops show up at his door. \nTHE TEACHER\, set and shot with difficulty in occupied territory\, is the feature debut of Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning British-Palestinian writer-director Farah Nabulsi. Inspired by true events and led by a commanding and wounded performance from Bakri\, the film probes the desperate actions of those who feel they have no recourse for justice.

SUMMARY:Arab Film Club: Alexandria... Why? [In-Person Only]
DESCRIPTION:(Youssef Chahine\, 1979\, Egypt\, 133 min\, in Egyptian Arabic with English subtitles)\n\nAlexandria during World War II. Yehia\, a young man in his final year of school who loves movies and music\, dreams of making it to Hollywood. But like most of Egypt’s middle class\, the war has left his parents in a tight financial situation. Through Yehia’s endeavors\, his Christian family and his diverse group of friends\, we are exposed to different segments of Alexandrian society: from Egyptian and British soldiers\, communist workers and patriotic aristocrats to social climbers and war profiteers. A rich\, dynamic portrait of the director’s beloved city during a seminal moment in its long and layered history. \nAn Egyptian classic\, Alexandria…Why? won the Silver Bear – Special Jury Prize at the 29th Berlin International Film Festival in 1979. \nAbout Youssef Chahine: \nBorn in Alexandria in 1926 to a middle-class family of Greek and Lebanese origin\, Chahine came into the world between the wars in the heart of the region’s most cosmopolitan city. From an early age he developed a passion for theater\, cinema\, and Shakespeare. After spending a year at the University of Alexandria\, he decided to study acting at California’s Pasadena Playhouse\, only to quickly turn to directing. Chahine’s reputation as an international auteur was established early on; his sophomore effort Son of the Nile (Ibn el Nil\, 1951) was nominated for Cannes’ Grand Prix of the Festival in 1952. \n– Bio by Joseph Fahim

SUMMARY:Feral Abbasi-Ghnaim: A Celebration of Palestinian Embroidery
DESCRIPTION:A Celebration of Palestinian Embroidery presents selected works by Feryal Abbasi-Ghnaim\, an award-winning master artist\, renowned teacher\, mother\, and grandmother\, in honor of her birthday. Throughout her life and career\, Abbasi-Ghnaim has devoted herself to preserving and passing down the centuries-old art of tatreez to Palestinian women and girls in the diaspora. She has also worked to educate the American public about its deep significance\, both as an intangible cultural heritage and as a tangible documentation for storytelling\, identity\, and resistance. This exhibition honors her remarkable contributions to the community and the world\, as documented in Tatreez & Tea: Embroidery and Storytelling in the Palestinian Diaspora (2016). Organized by her three daughters\, this intimate exhibition highlights how her work functions as both a personal and collective archive of beauty\, memory\, and sorrow. Every stitch bridges home and homeland\, threading stories across generations and geographies. Through her hands\, tatreez becomes more than embroidery—it becomes a visual language of Palestinian resilience\, identity\, and creative expression in exile.

SUMMARY:Announcing: Resistance Arts\, a Conversation with El-Funoun (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Announcing: Resistance Arts\, a Conversation with El-Funoun\nSaturday\, July 12 | 10AM Pacific\, 1PM Eastern\, 8PM Palestine \nThe struggle for Palestine lives in every form of resistance\, including art. Widely considered the lead Palestinian dance company in Palestine and the diaspora\, El-Funoun was established in 1979 by a small group of enthusiastic\, creative and committed artists. The Troupe has developed an innovative style of dance deeply-rooted in Palestinian and Arab folklore and informed by elements of contemporary dance movement. A leading cultural institution in Palestine\, El-Funoun has used dabke\, music\, and cultural work as tools to confront erasure and resist the zionist occupation\, making them and their dancers a continuous target of imprisonment and repression by the zionist entity. \nJoin the PYM’s Resistance Arts Committee for a discussion with El-Funoun that is rooted in political clarity\, history\, and the realities we face now. We will be exploring: \n– What do we mean by resistance arts in the Palestinian context?\n– How did El-Funoun turn culture into a site of struggle\, from choreography built inside prison walls to stages across the world?\n– What does it mean to build and defend Palestinian cultural institutions today\, both under occupation and in exile? \nLink to register for the webinar: https://bit.ly/PYMxEl-FunounWebinar \nYou don’t want to miss this!
