SUMMARY:Mideast Focus Film Series 2019 - Sky and Ground
DESCRIPTION:SKY and GROUND    \nIn this film we join the Nabi clan as they smuggle their way from bombed-out homes in Aleppo to\, they hope\, a better life in Germany. Rita Zawaideh will host and we have invited a local refugee family to join us and share their story as well. \nin Bloedel Hall \nThe Mideast Focus Ministry will offer its sixth series of films to promote understanding of the situation in Palestine. Our theme this year is “Finding Home”. We will consider various aspects of being a refugee\, in Palestine\, as well as many other places in this 21st century world. SUMMARY:Poetry Series: Solmaz Sharif
DESCRIPTION:This is a reading by Solmaz Sharif. \nSharif is the author of the poetry collection LOOK\, a finalist for the National Book Award and the PEN Open Book Award and the winner of the 2017 American Book Award for Poetry. \nSharif’s LOOK\, asks us to see the ongoing costs of war as the unbearable loss of human lives and the insidious abuses against our everyday speech. In this virtuosic array of poems\, lists\, shards\, and sequences\, Sharif assembles her family’s and her own fragmented narratives in the aftermath of warfare. Those repercussions echo into the present day\, in the grief for those killed in America’s invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq\, and in the discrimination endured at the checkpoints of daily encounter. \n\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/2020839484846823/?notif_t=plan_user_invited&notif_id=1547763220270048

SUMMARY:YASMIN KHAN: AUTHOR TALK: ZAITOUN
DESCRIPTION:British cook Yasmin Khan unlocks the flavors and fragrances of modern Palestine\, from the sun-kissed pomegranate stalls of Akka\, on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea\, through evergreen oases of date plantations in the Jordan Valley\, to the fading fish markets of Gaza City. In each place she visits\, Khan enters the kitchens of Palestinians of all ages and backgrounds\, discovering the secrets of their cuisine and sharing heartlifting stories. \nPalestinian food is winningly fresh and bright\, centered around colorful mezze dishes that feature the region’s bountiful eggplants\, peppers\, artichokes\, and green beans; slow-cooked stews of chicken and lamb flavored with Palestinian barahat spice blends; and the marriage of local olive oil with earthy za’atar\, served in small bowls to accompany toasted breads. It has evolved over several millennia through the influences of Arabic\, Jewish\, Armenian\, Persian\, Turkish\, and Bedouin cultures and civilizations that have ruled over\, or lived in\, the area known as ancient Palestine. \nWe are thrilled that Yasmin is coming to Book Larder all the way from the UK! Yasmin will share her knowledge and passion about the cuisine of Palestine\, we will make a bite from the book for you to try\, and you can get a signed copy of Zaitoun. Please note the author will sign copies of the book purchased at Book Larder. \nCan’t attend this event but still want a signed copy of the book? Order it here for shipping and instore pickup. \n

SUMMARY:Syria Sixth Space: Artistic Expression as Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:A public lecture by curator Alma Salem; Q&A post-talk with Dr. Maryam Griffin \nIn this public lecture\, arts curator and cultural advisor Alma Salem will introduce her Syria Sixth Space project\, a mobile exhibitions platform providing space to gather and highlight Syrian artists and the transformational power of their work. Salem will also address the following questions: How have Syrian artists taken the lead in embracing the voices of the unheard and freedom of expression in the midst of the conflict in Syria? How are Syrian arts workers overcoming the barriers of time and geography in order to bring people together to shift narratives\, to create new cutting-edge arts movements\, and to change realities? What is the political and cultural significance of this work in and beyond Syria? While addressing these topics\, Salem will present the works of Syrian artists who harness the transformative force of the arts to question\, research\, engage\, recover\, imagine\, and resist. \nAlso join us for the Luncheon Meet and Greet hosted by the Diversity Center on Thur Feb 7 from 12-2pm. \nIn Discovery Hall Room 162
