SUMMARY:Palestinian Narrative: Censorship and Creativity in Time of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Over the past few weeks\, Palestinian activists have taken to the streets and social media to protest Israeli attacks on Palestinians both online and offline. During this time\, a campaign of censorship from the Israeli government on social media platforms has been implemented\, with hundreds of posts and accounts being taken down without clear explanations or violations. As a result\, Palestinians have found new and innovative ways to share information and content across social media\, in order to avoid possible censorship. \nThe webinar will focus on successful aspects of digital activism in recent weeks\, and analyze how governments and social media companies have worked to censor this creative resistance; in particular\, the impact of Israel and technology companies on Palestinian freedom of expression and the role of digital activists and influencers during this period. \n\nTime

SUMMARY:Blueprints for Bureaucracy: How the Egyptian Government Designed Settlements in the Desert to oversee Amethyst Mining
DESCRIPTION:WHEN\nThursday\, Jun 3\, 2021\, 6 – 7:30 p.m.\n\n\nONLINE MEETING LINK\nus02web.zoom.us…\n\n\nEVENT TYPES\nAcademics\n\n\nEVENT SPONSORS\nA Lecture Sponsored by the American Research Center in Egypt – Northwest Chapter\nCo-sponsored by the UW Dept. of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization\n\n\nFACEBOOK\nwww.facebook.com…\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDESCRIPTION\n\nThe design of a space is an essential element to the organization of productive work generated by the people using that space. The principles of organization of administration can speak to the greater importance of architecture and design as means of control and productivity. This talk will present results from ongoing archaeological survey and excavation of the Wadi el-Hudi Expedition in Egypt’s Eastern Desert. The focus will be on Sites 5 and 9. These types of settlements have often been confused with fortresses because of elements from their designs\, but fortification was not its main purpose. Various architectural and archaeological nuances demonstrate how Egyptian officials designed their spaces to maximize amethyst production quarried at these sites through the organization their workforces and workspaces. \nKate Liszka is the Benson and Pamela Harer Fellow in Egyptology and an Associate Professor of History at California State University\, San Bernardino. She received her PhD in Egyptology from the University of Pennsylvania in 2012. From 2012-2015 she was a Cotsen Postdoctoral Fellow in the Society of Fellows at Princeton University. SUMMARY:There Is A Field\, a film\, by Jen Marlowe
DESCRIPTION:There Is A Field\n\na film by Jen Marlowe\nMay 27 from 7–9pm PT (Zoom film screening + panel discussion)\nMay 28–30 (view the film online\, on demand)\nSliding scale admission: $0–25. Suggested contribution: $15\nGet your tickets here: https://nwfilmforum.org/films/there-is-a-field-online/\nPlease pay what you can; 25% of proceeds will go directly to support Washington state families impacted by police violence. Remaining proceeds support co-presenting organizations Donkeysaddle Projects\, Dunya Productions\, and Northwest Film Forum.\nAbout the opening night event:\nDunya Productions\, Seattle Rep\, and NWFF are partnering on a virtual event which will include watching the film\, followed by a meaningful discussion with Seattle-based Black Lives Matter and Palestinian justice activists\, exploring the connections addressed in the film\, ways to locally embark on joint organizing and solidarity\, and the power of theatre and film in social justice movements.\n \nAbout the film: \nIn October 2000\, a police officer shot and killed unarmed 17-year-old Asel Asleh. His story is tragically familiar for Americans\, but Asel was not killed in Ferguson\, New York City\, Atlanta\, or Minneapolis. Asel was a Palestinian teenager who was murdered by Israeli police as he participated in a demonstration\, calling for an end to the Israeli occupation and settler-colonization.\nThere Is a Field began as a play about Asel’s life and his death\, told from the perspective of his older sister\, Nardin. Through Nardin’s struggle to cope with the murder of her brother\, the play offers a uniquely personal lens for learning about intersecting systems of oppression\, including Zionism and white supremacy—root causes of state-sanctioned violence and structural racism.\nLearn more at https://www.thereisafield.movie/

SUMMARY:P&P Live! Aminatta Forna — The Window Seat - with Rabih Alameddine
DESCRIPTION:Aminatta Forna is one of our most important literary voices. In The Window Seat\, an elegantly rendered and wide-ranging collection of new and previously published essays\, Forna writes intimately about displacement\, trauma and memory\, love\, and how we coexist and encroach on the non-human world.\n\n\n\n\n\nMovement is a constant here. In the title piece\, “The Window Seat\,” she reveals the unexpected enchantments of commercial air travel. In “Obama and the Renaissance Generation\,” she documents how\, despite the narrative of Obama’s exceptionalism\, his father\, like her own\, was one of a generation of gifted young Africans who came to the United Kingdom and the United States for education and were expected to build their home countries anew after colonialism. In “The Last Vet\,” time spent shadowing Dr. Jalloh\, the only veterinarian in Sierra Leone\, as he works with the street dogs of Freetown\, becomes a meditation on what a society’s treatment of animals tells us about its principles. In “Crossroads\,” she examines race in America from an African perspective\, and in “Power Walking” she describes what it means to walk in the world in a Black woman’s body and in “The Watch” she explores the raptures of sleep and sleeplessness the world over. \nForna will be in conversation with Rabih Alameddine\, author of the novels Koolaids\, I\, the Divine\, The Hakawati\, An Unnecessary Woman\, the story collection\, The Perv\, and most recently\, The Angel of History. He divides his time between San Francisco and Beirut.

SUMMARY:Amir Zaki "Empty Vessel" - Online Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:James Harris Gallery is pleased to present our seventh exhibition by California artist Amir Zaki. Comprised of two bodies of work\, collectively entitled\, “Empty Vessel\,” the series features striking colorful photographs of both skateboard parks and broken ceramic vases. Together\, these images open a discussion of the history and future of photography and duplicitous version of truth in the modern world. In his work\, Zaki strives to disrupt common notions of authenticity\, monumentality\, and documentation through a hybridization of techniques. The two disparate series are connected through real and fictive space illuminating the truth between the everyday and the ideal. The gallery will mount virtual exhibitions until the next location of our physical space is announced in the fall of 2021. \nDownload the press release \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWORKS IN SHOW\nABOUT THE ARTIST\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmir Zaki\nA firm believer in the transformative power of the photographic image\, Zaki images are rooted in the history of the medium and uses it to shed light on the means of representation. Over the last 16 years\, Zaki has pushed the physicality of the photograph’s two dimensional construct\, allowing it to exist on its own and also exploring its own object-ness.   In order to capture and record the original site\, Zaki’s representations depict the complexity of place in terms of interactive evolving experience\, an ongoing ecological intervention. The artist responds to the shifting contemporary landscape where nothing is permanent\, constructing his own visual language to illustrate an entire mythology of place. \nAmir Zaki lives and works in Southern California. He received his MFA from UCLA in 1999 and has been exhibiting nationally and internationally since graduating. He is a full professor at the University of California at Riverside. His work is included in many museum collections including the Hammer Museum of Art\, Los Angeles County Museum of Art\, New Museum of Contemporary Art\, Orange County Museum of Art\, Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, and the Whitney Museum of American Art\, among others.

Will brother and sister face their truths once family secrets come to light? Inspired by true stories of first-generation Americans\, Brilliant Mind takes a hard look at generational trauma\, the struggle between self and family\, and the weight of carrying a legacy. It’s an excavation of the politics of gender in immigrant communities and the challenges ever present between tradition and culture. This is a story of hope\, of what gets lost in translation\, and of what happens when we dare to love unconditionally. \nIn this extraordinary live and interactive digital experience\, explore the family ties that bind and break us\, the healing that comes through death\, and the acceptance that our parents do the best they can—the rest is up to us. \nCo-produced by Marin Theatre Company & Storykrapht

SUMMARY:Nesrine Malik (livestream) Six Political Myths Used to Deflect and Discredit Demands for Social Justice
DESCRIPTION:In 2016\, then-presidential candidate Donald Trump declared: “I think the big problem this country has is being politically correct.” This led many after his victory to blame “identity politics” for his win. When Trump was banned from Twitter\, he claimed it was an assault on free speech. Columnist Nesrine Malik contends that both of these things were myths\, and joins us to explain how these arguments over lies impact the struggle for greater equality in society. \nIn a livestream presentation\, she shares from her book We Need New Stories: The Myths That Subvert Freedom\, looking at how what she believes to be the lie that American values are under assault creates a solid obfuscation from the real problems. By interweaving reporting with a frank and no-holds-barred analysis of American history and politics\, Malik offers a compelling account of how calls to preserve “free speech” are used against the vulnerable; how a fixation with “wokeness\,” “political correctness\,” and “cancel culture” is in fact an organized and well-funded campaign by elites; and how the fear of racial minorities and their “identity politics” obscures the biggest threat of all–white terrorism. Don’t miss this poignant inspection of the crises roiling American contemporary politics–and the introduction of a radical framework for understanding and identifying it. \nNesrine Malik is an award-winning British-Sudanese columnist and features writer for the Guardian. She lives in London.
