SUMMARY:Home Away FROM HOME: Julian Pena Gallery
DESCRIPTION:When it comes to being of Middle Eastern descent and living in the U.S.\, one’s life experience includes regularly facing varying degrees of prejudice and discrimination. While these people feel grounded and a sense of belonging in their homes where their identities and cultures are very much alive\, they are forced to confront feelings of otherness when they step outside whether it’s through receiving judgmental glances\, harsh words or physical violence. With eyes on the outside\, Middle Easterners who live in other parts of the world experience these struggles indirectly; feeling an instinctive connection to those in the U.S.\, they are affected by what they see and hear on the news or social media. “Home Away From Home” exhibits original work by artists of Middle Eastern descent living in the U.S. and abroad who attempt to explore themes of underrepresentation\, isolation and racism while navigating the physical and emotional disconnect between themselves\, their cultures and the places they call home.

SUMMARY:Virtual Book Launch - In My Mother's Footsteps by Mona Hajjar Halaby
DESCRIPTION:All times are based on US EDT – 12 Noon = 7:00 PM in Palestine. \n\nPlease click here to register for this event. \n“Refugees are like seeds that scatter in the wind\, and land in different soils that become their reluctant homes\,” my mother once told me. As a small child\, I looked up at my mother and clutched her hand. The puffiness of her palm reminded me of a loaf of warm pita bread\, and when she laced her fingers into mine like a pretzel\, I felt safe. I would have walked with her to the ends of the earth. \nWhen Mona moved from California to Ramallah to teach conflict resolution at the Ramallah Friends School for a year\, she kept a journal. Within its pages\, she wrote her impressions of her homeland\, a place she had only experienced through her mother’s memories.

SUMMARY:Omar El Akkad with Jeff VanderMeer (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Novelist Omar El Akkad\, now living south of here in Portland\, but for many years an award-winning international journalist living and working out of Toronto\, blew readers away a few years ago with his eerily prescient first novel\, American War. He gave a moving reading from that at Elliott Bay. We anticipate similar engagement for readers attending this – and reading – his haunting\, beautifully written new novel\, What Strange Paradise (Knopf). There is an overwhelmed boat filled with refugees fleeing homelands such as Syria\, Ethiopia\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, a boat which\, in time\, capsizes. There is a survivor\, a young boy\, and his attempts to elude would-be captors\, aided by a young girl living on the island he has washed ashore upon. These are the bare bones of what Omar El Akkad does with extraordinary skill\, empathy\, compassion. \n“What Strange Paradise is by turns tender and brutal in its truths. It is tremendously written\, propulsive as it is expansive as it is granular in its specificities. Omar El Akkad writes with such emotional precision\, power\, and grace. Here we get the wondrousness of children set in sharp relief against a backdrop of the all too common dehumanization then dismissal of refugees everywhere. The book devastates and uplifts\, somehow\, and we are not left with hope—that isn’t the point—but asked to witness\, to see what is here\, with clarity\, and with fullness of heart.” —Tommy Orange. \n“What Strange Paradise by Omar El Akkad just resuscitated my heart. This novel—following a boy who survives a refugee passage\, and a girl whose homeland feels fractured—dares to unite us on the shore of shared human experience\, and redefines hope in the face of despair. I want to read this book every single day. I want to live in a world where the beauty of strangers is a heartsong.”  —Lidia Yuknavitch. \nWith Omar El Akkad in conversation this evening will be the wonderful writer Jeff VanDerMeer\, who recently did an evening such as this for Elliott Bay readers with his own newest novel\, Hummingbird Salamander. A generous supporter of other writers and many good causes\, he and Omar El Akkad have some interesting shared literary ‘history’ of a good sort\, which will no doubt come out this evening.

SUMMARY:Disrupted Pasts\, Displaced Futures: Arte Archive
DESCRIPTION:Disrupted Pasts\, Displaced Futures is a selection of moving image works by contemporary artists from the Middle East and North Africa\, blending science fiction\, arabfuturism\, and magic realism to tackle themes of displacement\, migration\, and climate crisis. Responding to an unstable present through the lens of the future\, these alternate realities open a space where new possibilities emerge. \nFeatured Artists: Meriem Bennani\, Mariam Mekiwi\, Larissa Sansour \nRSVP HERE \nThe 4 Movies Featured Are: \nParty on the CAPS synopsis: In a world where teleportation has replaced planes\, a wacky crocodile named Fiona tells of life on the CAPS: an island-turned-refugee-camp for illegal immigrants caught mid-teleportation. Themes of displacement\, biotechnology and privacy are evoked through the augmented reality of a raucous birthday party in the Moroccan quarter of the CAPS. Mixing the languages of reality TV\, advertising\, documentary and high-end commercial aesthetics\, Bennani explores the potential of storytelling through magical realism and humour. \n  \nBefore I Forget Synopsis: El Captain disappears\, one of his disciples takes a journey in the ocean to cut off the internet cable\, the water level is rising\, an amphibian woman appears at the shore looking for her mother\, and the memories of two women in a ward intertwine. Scientist Dr. Sharaf is trying to congregate all of them – the members of the secret society of amphibians – in an attempt to save the world. \n  \nNation Estate synopsis: With its glossy mixture of computer-generated imagery\, live actors\, and an arabesque electronica soundtrack\, the Nation Estate film explores a vertical solution to Palestinian statehood. Palestinians have their state in the form of a single skyscraper: the Nation Estate. One colossal high-rise houses the entire Palestinian population – now finally living the high life. \n  \nIn the Future They Ate from the Finest Porcelain synopsis: Combining live-action and computer-generated imagery\, In the Future They Ate from the Finest Porcelain explores the role of myth in history\, fact\, and national identity. A narrative resistance group makes underground deposits of elaborate porcelain\, which they suggest belonged to an entirely fictional civilization. Their aim is to influence history and support future claims to their vanishing lands. \n  \nplus a recorded discussion with the directors! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Omar El Akkad in Conversation With Roy Scranton
DESCRIPTION:From Omar El Akkad\, the widely acclaimed author of American War\, comes What Strange Paradise (Knopf)\, a beautifully written\, unrelentingly dramatic\, and profoundly moving new novel that brings the global refugee crisis down to the level of a child’s eyes. More bodies have washed up on the shores of a small island. Another overfilled\, ill-equipped\, dilapidated ship has sunk under the weight of its too many passengers: Syrians\, Ethiopians\, Egyptians\, Lebanese\, Palestinians\, all of them desperate to escape untenable lives in their homelands. And only one has made the passage: nine-year-old Amir\, a Syrian boy who has the good fortune to fall into the hands not of the officials but of Vänna: a teenage girl\, native to the island\, who lives inside her own sense of homelessness in a place and among people she has come to disdain. And though she and the boy are complete strangers\, though they don’t speak a common language\, she determines to do whatever it takes to save him. In alternating chapters\, we learn the story of the boy’s life and of how he came to be on the boat; and we follow the girl and boy as they make their way toward a vision of safety. But as the novel unfurls we begin to understand that this is not merely the story of two children finding their way through a hostile world\, it is the story of our collective moment in this time: of empathy and indifference\, of hope and despair — and of the way each of those things can blind us to reality\, or guide us to a better one. El Akkad will be joined in conversation by Roy Scranton\, author of Learning to Die in the Anthropocene and We’re Doomed. Now What?. \nRegister for the Zoom event  /  Buy the Book

SUMMARY:Palestinian Virtual Pop-up Book Club: MINOR DETAIL by Adania Shibli
DESCRIPTION:Please click here to register for this event. \nJoin writers Susan Muaddi Darraj and Sahar Mustafah in conversation about Minor Detail\, the critically acclaimed novel by Palestinian author Adania Shibli. Her book was a 2020 finalist for the National Book Translation Award and longlisted for The International Booker Prize. Minor Detail is this year’s One Book\, Many Communities selection by Librarians and Archivists with Palestine. Celebrate by reading the book and joining the discussion. \nBook Synopsis\nMinor Detail begins during the summer of 1949\, one year after the war that the Palestinians mourn as the Nakba–the catastrophe that led to the displacement and exile of some 700\,000 people–and the Israelis celebrate as the War of Independence. Israeli soldiers murder an encampment of Bedouin in the Negev desert\, and among their victims they capture a Palestinian teenager and they rape her\, kill her\, and bury her in the sand. Many years later\, in the near-present day\, a young woman in Ramallah tries to uncover some of the details surrounding this particular rape and murder\, and becomes fascinated to the point of obsession\, not only because of the nature of the crime\, but because it was committed exactly twenty-five years to the day before she was born. Adania Shibli masterfully overlays these two translucent narratives of exactly the same length to evoke a present forever haunted by the past. SUMMARY:ARCE Chicago: A Nubia-Centric View of Egypt's Twenty-fifth Dynasty
DESCRIPTION:Lecture Information: \nThe Twenty-fifth Dynasty\, the time of Kushite hegemony\, was one of the most creative and prolific periods for sculpture and architecture in Egypt—certainly an anomaly for a country under foreign rule.  This talk will examine the country the Kushites entered\, look at some of the royal and private works created under their aegis\, and attempt to solve the mystery of how and why this happened.

SUMMARY:"The Price of Oslo"\, directed by Rawan Damen
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the screening of the film “The Price of Oslo”\, directed by Rawan Damen. The film is about 100 minutes.  \nThe film screening will be followed by a discussion with the film director Rawan Damen. Screening will begin at 12 Noon US EDT; 7:00 PM Palestine time \nAbout the Film \nFor most people\, the Oslo Accords will forever be symbolised by the grand public signing ceremony that took place on the lawn of the White House on September 13\, 1993. Far fewer people\, however\, are aware of the fact that the Accords were actually signed several weeks earlier\, on August 20\, in a guest house in Oslo\, or of the seven-hour long telephone conversation\, on August 18\, that was instrumental in bringing the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and Israel to the point where they could be signed. \nRawan Damen: “After six months of research and numerous interviews\, I was certain that light needed to be shed on the aspects of this story that had been intentionally left unlit.”

DESCRIPTION:CLICK HERE to register for this virtual event! \nSince the day Donald Trump was elected\, his critics warned that an unexpected crisis would test the former reality-television host—and they predicted that the president would prove unable to meet the moment. In 2020\, that crisis came to pass\, with the outcomes more devastating and consequential than anyone dared to imagine. Nightmare Scenario is the complete story of Donald Trump’s handling—and mishandling—of the COVID-19 catastrophe\, during the period of January 2020 up to Election Day that year. Yasmeen Abutaleb and Damian Paletta take us deep inside the White House\, from the Situation Room to the Oval Office\, to show how the members of the administration launched an all-out war against the health agencies\, doctors\, and scientific communities\, all in their futile attempts to wish away the worst global pandemic in a century. \nYasmeen Abutaleb* covers health policy for the Washington Post. She chronicled the Trump administration’s coronavirus response and White House task force in 2020. She previously reported for Reuters. \nDamian Paletta is the economics editor at the Washington Post and previously covered the White House for the Post and the Wall Street Journal. \nThe authors will be in conversation with Ashley Parker\, a Pulitzer Prize winning White House reporter for The Washington Post. \n*I couldn’t confirm that she was Arab but I went ahead and added this event to the calendar just in case!

SUMMARY:June's Freedom Film: Storytelling for collective liberation
DESCRIPTION:In the wake of increased attacks on Palestinians\, the interconnected struggles of those fighting against settler-colonialism have never been clearer. Donkeysaddle Projects’ Vignette Collective strives to connect the decolonial struggles of Black\, Palestinian\, Chicanx\, and Turtle Island’s Indigenous communities. Through poetry\, personal essays\, and performance\, we look at the impacts of settler-colonization and celebrate the resilience of those who have been in struggle. And we want to share it with you.  \nThat’s why we’re inviting you to join us on June 30th at 8pm ET for our virtual fundraiser featuring the work-in-progress from the Vignettes Collective. Get a sneak peek of our creative\, collaborative process with our collective of artists\, activists\, and organizers\, while raising funds to support Palestinians in urgent need in Gaza. We hope to see you there!
