SUMMARY:Circle Mirror Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Circle Mirror Transformation is a case study of strangers willing to take a chance and open themselves to the revelations\, indignities\, hilarity\, and heartbreak of an amateur acting class in a community center classroom. In doing so\, they transform the space into the anti-Zoom room; it becomes a quietly poignant reminder of the power of being present with one another\, a reflection of the stories we share through the silliness and the silences\, an open invitation to partake in the transformative and sublime power of play. \nCircle Mirror Transformation premiered at Playwrights Horizons in October 2009. The play received Obie Awards for Best New American Play\, Performance\, Ensemble\, and Directing; and was nominated for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Director of a Play. \n  \n*This play has an Arab character and Arab actors \n

SUMMARY:Movie: From Ground Zero at the Northwest Film Forum
DESCRIPTION:Shortlisted for Best International Feature for the 2025 Academy Awards\, FROM GROUND ZERO is an anthology project comprised of 22 short films created by filmmakers from Gaza. Launched by renowned Palestinian filmmaker Rashid Masharawi\, the initiative was created during the current 2023/2024 conflict and aims to provide a platform for young Palestinian artists to express themselves through their craft. \nEach film\, ranging in length from three to six minutes\, presents a unique perspective on the current reality in Gaza. The project captures the diverse experiences of life in the Palestinian enclave\, including the challenges\, tragedies\, and moments of resilience faced by its people. Using a mix of genres including fiction\, documentary\, docu-fiction\, animation\, and experimental cinema\, From Ground Zero presents a rich diversity of stories that reflect the sorrow\, joy\, and hope inherent in Gazan life. \nDespite harsh filming conditions\, Gaza’s vibrant artistic scene shines through this stunning anthology film\, which offers an intimate and powerful portrait of daily life in modern-day Palestine – and the enduring spirit of its people. \nIn Arabic with English subtitles. \n“The fact that this film even exists seems miraculous… [From Ground Zero] aims to humanize\, to empathize\, to go beyond the headlines and geopolitics. It aims to convey the hopes and dreams of everyday people\, which persist even in dire circumstances.” Jennifer Green\, Alliance of Women Film Journalists \n“A powerful cry to the world that these filmmakers\, collaborators\, and people walking in the background are still there\, still living under worsening conditions\, and still need help. From Ground Zero is an unforgettable exhibition of the human spirit.” Monica Castillo\, RogerEbert.com

SUMMARY:The Role of Art and Journalism in Society (Hybrid inperson & virtual)
DESCRIPTION:There exists a pervasive illusion that journalism embodies truth and objectivity\, yet it is fundamentally entrenched in a Eurocentric perspective that has long exacerbated social polarization. What ideological forces underpin this medium\, enabling it to perpetuate such divisions?  \nArtists\, as individuals deeply connected to society and its multifaceted truths\, strive to reveal these truths through various forms. Positioned on the precipice of a changing world\, artists maintain a profound grasp on truth. How can artists intervene to redeem journalism from its historical complicity in supporting hegemonic ideologies? Can the creative and critical sensibilities of artists unearth and challenge the concealed biases and contradictions that journalism often obscures under the guise of objectivity? In what ways can artistic endeavors disrupt the entrenched Eurocentric narratives and foster a more inclusive and emancipatory discourse within the media landscape? How can the aesthetic and imaginative dimensions of art confront and transform the existing power structures that shape journalistic practice? What role can artists play in reimagining journalism as a medium of genuine critical reflection and societal truth?  \nRegistration opens on December 12\, 2024.

Beloved by generations of readers and writers\, Nye uses her writing with themes of love\, family\, and resilience to attest to our shared humanity. \nNational Book Award Finalist and former Young People’s Poet Laureate Naomi Shihab Nye’s Grace Notes: Poems about Families celebrates family and community. This rich collection of one hundred never-before-published poems is also the poet’s most personal work to date. With poems about her own childhood and school years\, her parents and grandparents\, and the people who have touched and shaped her life in so many ways\, this is an emotional and sparkling collection to savor\, share\, and read again and again.
