DESCRIPTION:In February 2002 – about a year before the U.S. invasion – Iraqi filmmaker Abbas Fahdel traveled home from France to capture everyday life as his country prepared for war. He concentrated on family and friends\, including his 12-year-old nephew\, Haider\, as they went about their daily lives\, which had come to include planning for shortages of food\, water and power. No strangers to war\, the Iraqis thought they understood what was coming\, and could even manage to be grimly humorous about what they felt would likely be a major and lengthy inconvenience. And then\, the war began. \n  \nWhen Fahdel resumed filming in 2003\, two weeks after the invasion\, daily activities have come to a near standstill\, the city is overrun with foreign soldiers\, and many areas of Baghdad had been closed off to ordinary citizens. Iraqis endure\, seemingly as unwitting as Americans themselves about what further tragedy awaits. Fahdel’s epic yet intimate film paints a compelling portrait of people struggling to survive while their civilization\, dating back to ancient times\, is destroyed around them.

This … Continue reading Fall Arts Walk Social Justice Party \n\n\n\n\n  \nJoin the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice (RCF)\, Art Forces\, the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural Project (ORSMP)\, during Arts Walk weekend for another social justice block party! This community gathering will be held in front of the Olympia-Rafah Solidarity Mural\, October 4th & 5th\, from 6-10pm Friday the 4th and 12-6pm Saturday the 5th. \n  \nOn Friday and Saturday\, both days of Arts Walk\, RCF will be exhibiting original artworks documenting the experiences of Palestinian youth across the decades.  This special collection includes: \n\nOriginal art created by young people in the West Bank and Gaza. These works were made possible by Wejdan Diab\, a former teacher at the Mira Kindergarten in Gaza City\, the first area targeted by Israeli forces after October 7.\nShoshana Cohen’s A Generation of Solidarity\, a photo exhibition capturing the day-to-day lives of youth living under occupation in the West Bank during the 1980s.\nImages from the Palestinian Cultural Palace\, one of RCF’s Gaza projects.\n\n  \nThroughout Arts Walk weekend\, Art Forces will also be showcasing their digital exhibition\, Art for Gaza\, featuring artists from Palestine and across the country.  All the artwork will be for sale\, with proceeds benefiting the Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA). This digital exhibition will be available to the public between October 3rd and mid-November. Please visit their website for more information. \n  \nOn Friday\, in front of the Mural\, please also considering joining us for: \n\n A cultural presentation on Every Child Matters by Dakota Case from the Water Warriors Canoe Society.\nA vigil for Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi\, a local Turkish-American student activist who was shot and killed by the Israeli military in the West Bank on September 6\, 2024.\nSpeakers\, kids activities\, music\, and more!\n\n  \nArtisan olive oil from Canaan Palestine and Palestinian crafts will be available for purchase. \nWe will be announcing additional details soon\, so please stay tuned for more information. Sidra is but one of the countless children who have been killed by the U.S.-funded Israeli genocide. \nWe signify our grief and solidarity with a simple act of laying out shoes—as many as we can gather—to try to convey the loss and unimaginable scale of the injustice. We invite passersby to contribute a pair of shoes\, and write the name of a person that has been stolen from us. We invite you to walk the labyrinth and connect with any feelings that arise. \nSidra left this earth without legs and feet. She and many children like her no longer need shoes. We as a global community have failed to protect them\, and it is our responsibility to share their stories and honor their lives. \nShoes for Sidra is an all-ages event with speakers and kid-appropriate programming.
