SUMMARY:Arabian Bakeshop: PCC Cooking Class
DESCRIPTION:MENU\n\nMakrouta – Swirled Date Cookies\nBesbousa – Sweet Soaked Semolina Cake\nHalawa Truffles – Chocolate Dipped Tahini Truffles\n\nDESCRIPTION\nCelebrate the culture of the Middle East during this festive time of year learning to make Middle Eastern desserts. Bake buttery\, date cookies and learn how to swirl dough and make the filling. Make simple syrup and discover the role it plays in Besbousa – a sweet-soaked semolina cake. And Chef Hend will demonstrate how to craft tahini into halva\, a staple confection\, that we’ll transform into a truffle dipped in chocolate. \nVegetarian; contains dairy and nuts\, \nAbout the instructor: After cooking in Michelin Star restaurants and high volume catering events\, I made a “temporary” switch to teaching cooking classes. However\, the satisfaction and unique experience I received from teaching convinced me that this was my new culinary path. I am a graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu\, where I mainly focused on French and Western technique\, but I have deep roots in Middle-Eastern cuisine and an enthusiastic\, developed passion for Japanese cuisine. In my travels I seek out to learn something new\, and for me\, the more specific and obscure\, the better. My interests and abilities continue to range out further\, as long as I can do it\, I will teach it. \nCLASS NOTES\n  \n\nThis is a hands-on format class for adults.\nClass information will be emailed 48 hours before class. Our emails can get caught in spam filters or blocked entirely\, please contact us if you don’t receive the class information.\nCancellation Policy: Classes are nonrefundable. If you cannot attend\, you can request a class credit or transfer to a different class up to 7 days prior to class or have someone attend in your place.

SUMMARY:Jerusalem Story: Virtual Event
DESCRIPTION:Jerusalem Story tells the story of a unique city through a new lens—that of the city’s large and diverse indigenous Palestinian community. \nThis community has deep historic roots in Jerusalem and holds the strongest attachment to and love for their city. Yet\, they have been subjected to unrelenting efforts to erase their presence in\, and potential claim to\, the city—past\, present\, and future—in the service of cementing Israel’s imperative of claiming sole sovereignty in perpetuity over a “united Jewish Jerusalem.” Against this ongoing effort to erase the Palestinian cultural and community history as well as severing connection to place\, Jerusalem Story is reasserting the Palestinian presence. \nSPEAKERS: \nKate Rouhana \nFounding Director\, Jerusalem Story \nKate Rouhana is a writer\, editor\, and researcher. She has lived and worked as a journalist and researcher in Jerusalem and elsewhere in Palestine several times throughout her life. She holds an MA in Middle Eastern Studies and a BA in International Relations\, both from Harvard University. \nAmina Abdulhaq \nResearcher/Writer\, Jerusalem Story \nAmina Abdulhaq is a human rights lawyer and a researcher. Her family has deep historic roots in Jerusalem. Her work focuses on Jerusalem\, women\, and gender. Amina is fully devoted to raising all oppressed people’s voices\, inclusively embracing diversities and uniqueness. \nArda Aghazarian \nWriter\, Jerusalem Story \nArda Aghazarian is a communications consultant with ample experience in creative and professional writing and has also worked in audiovisual production—including film and radio. Arda has delivered training\, public speaking\, and mentoring at key global events\, mostly on issues related to women and conflict\, identity\, language\, and narrative. \nNadim Bawalsa \nResearcher/Writer\, Jerusalem Story \nNadim Bawalsa is a historian of modern Palestine and author of Transnational Palestine: Migration and the Right of Return before 1948 (Stanford University Press\, 2022).. Bawalsa’s work has also appeared in the Jerusalem Quarterly\, NACLA Report on the Americas\, Al-Shabaka: The Palestinian Policy Network\, the Journal of Palestine Studies\, and in two edited volumes. SUMMARY:Mercer Island Art Walk: SZ Gallery
DESCRIPTION:During this (Frist) Friday MI Art Walk\, stop by the SZ Gallery with a spirit of empathy & sense of curiosity\, as you explore and learn from Palestinian and Arab Artists. \n“Posters for Gaza” sheds light on the humanitarian crisis taking place in Gaza and demands recognition for Palestinian rights. This exhibit follows two previous shows\, “We Are Palestine\,” which touched on universal themes of the Holy Land and focused on humanizing the Palestinian people. “PALESTINE: Tracing Boundaries” focused more on architecture and featured Jerusalem (Al-Quds) through architectural interpretations\, in addition to the impacts of imposed walls and boundary edges on the lives of the indigenous people. \n Suzanne Zahr\, Art & Architecture | SZ Gallery \n2441 76th Ave SE\, Suite 160 Mercer Island\, WA \n (First) Friday\, May 3\, 5-8PM \n **FREE** ALL are welcome! \nIn this unique exhibition\, twenty-six artists come together to raise their voices\, through a series of posters produced specifically for this exhibition. The posters shed light on the ethnic cleansing and horrific massacres taking place in the Gaza Strip – possibly the worst in modern history – demanding the recognition of Palestinian rights to live freely on their land with dignity. \nRepresenting a long tradition in Palestinian history\, political posters were produced extensively in the seventies and the eighties by the Palestinian Liberation Organization with the contribution of Palestinian\, Arab\, and international artists. Posters played a crucial role in supporting the justice of the Palestinian cause and promoting it globally guided by the freedom\, dignity\, resilience\, and the ongoing aspiration for independence\, sought by Palestinians. \nUniformly sized and designed in a simplified manner\, the posters of each artist reflect their uniqueness in terms of style\, materials\, and the underlying narratives. Steering away from the digital norm\, participating artists poured their effort into producing those posters utilizing a variety of materials including acrylics\, inks\, charcoal\, collage\, and mixed media on paper\, while some artists employed various digital design techniques.

SUMMARY:SIFF: The Ride Ahead
DESCRIPTION:Samuel Habib is an adventurous\, cool\, 20-year-old disabled guy who says things like\, “Taking risks makes me feel proud\, powerful\, confident\, bold.” He doesn’t want much for his adult life\, just to “move into my own place\, get married\, and maybe have kids.” The Ride Ahead documents three years of Samuel’s search for how he can achieve things that feel so daunting for disabled folks; security\, independence\, and girlfriends. With the help of his father\, filmmaker Daniel Habib\, Sam outfits his chair with two video cameras\, enabling the audience to see Samuel’s actual point-of-view and how people interact with him. Samuel tells his own story\, in his own voice\, with the assistance of lovely animation by Xilia Faye and Ben Luce. The question of how to live a great life as a disabled badass propels Samuel to interview leading disability activists and advocates Judy Heumann\, Bob Williams\, Keith Jones\, Ali Stroker\, Maysoon Zayid\, Andrew Peterson\, and Lydia X.Y. Brown. \n
