SUMMARY:ArabishWay Story Time - Book Tree in Kirkland
DESCRIPTION:Join us at BookTree on Seattle Bookstore Day (aka Independent Book Day)\, Saturday April 27th between 1:30 and 2:30 pm for story time and activities with local author Laila Taji!\nShe’ll be reading her book\, These Chicks (هالصيصان)\, which is a beloved nursery rhyme\, well-known in the Levant; much like Hey Diddle Diddle in the States. Laila will also play interactive games and sing songs in Arabic\, as well as read her book and others in Arabic and English. It will be great for all ages but geared towards 18 month – 6 year olds. \nLaila Taji is an American of Palestinian heritage. She has an MPH in public health from the University of Washington and currently lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and two girls. She loved watching her kids blossom into readers but struggled to make that happen in Arabic since most books are complex and written in formal Arabic. She wrote These Chicks to give her kids an early Arabic reading experience and to connect them with their Arabic heritage.

SUMMARY:Radiolab's Jad Abumrad: The Miracle of Indoor Plumbing
DESCRIPTION:Radiolab’s Jad Abumrad: The Miracle of Indoor Plumbing \n\nSTG Presents Radiolab’s Jad Abumrad at The Moore Theatre on April 20\, 2019. \nJAD ABUMRAD is the host and creator of Radiolab (radiolab.org)\, a public radio program broadcast on 524 stations across the nation and downloaded more than 9 million times a month as a podcast. Most days\, Radiolab is the 2nd most popular podcast\, just behind This American Life. \nJad Abumrad did most of his growing up in Tennessee\, before studying creative writing and music composition at Oberlin College in Ohio. Following graduation\, Abumrad wrote music for films\, and reported and produced documentaries for a variety of local and national public radio programs. \nIn 2002\, Abumrad began tinkering with an idea for a new kind of radio program\, an openended radio “laboratory.” Radiolab has since evolved into one of public radio’s most popular programs. Abumrad hosts the program with Robert Krulwich and also serves as its lead producer\, composer and managing editor. Abumrad employs his dual backgrounds as composer and journalist to create what’s been called “a new aesthetic” in broadcast journalism. He orchestrates dialogue\, music\, interviews and sound effects into compelling documentaries that draw listeners into investigations of otherwise intimidating topics\, such as the nature of numbers\, the evolution of altruism\, or the legal foundation for the war on terror. \nIn 2010\, Radiolab was awarded the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award and in 2011 Abumrad was honored as a MacArthur Fellow (also known as the Genius Grant). The MacArthur Foundation website says: “Abumrad is inspiring boundless curiosity within a new generation of listeners and experimenting with sound to find ever more effective and entertaining ways to explain ideas and tell a story.” In 2015 the Radiolab episode “60 Words” was awarded a George Foster Peabody Award. \nThe Radiolab spinoff\, More Perfect\, a series about untold stories of the Supreme Court\, is currently in its 2nd season. The New York Times called More Perfect “…possibly the most mesmerizing podcast.” \nAlongside his radio work\, Abumrad continues to work as a composer and remixer. His music is currently being performed across the country. \n\n

SUMMARY:Country for Syria - Benefit for Syrian Families in the NW
DESCRIPTION:Proceeds will benefit local Syrian refugee families\, with support provided through the\nFriends of Salaam Cultural Museum Helping Syrian Refugees.\n________________________________________________________________\nCOUNTRY FOR SYRIA IS AN ISTANBUL-BASED INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COLLECTIVE. WITH MEMBERS HAILING FROM THE US\, SYRIA\, TURKEY\, CZECH REPUBLIC\, AND FRANCE\, IT’S MISSION IS TO HELP REFUGEES AND THOSE AFFECTED BY CONFLICT.The band blends traditional Middle Eastern music with American Country music. The band’s earnings contribute aid to Syrian refugees and those affected by conflict around the world. \nUnfortunately\, not all members of the group could make it to Seattle due to Trump’s ongoing Muslim ban. However\, the show will feature local musicians from the Seattle area and other special guests! \nFor more information about Country for Syria:\nhttp://www.countryforsyria.com/music/ \nApril 5th\, 2019\nDoors: 8pm\nSuggested donation: $10-15\n________________________________________________________________ \nCountry music has its origins in the American Civil War. Now Syria is in the midst of its own civil war. Their music draws parallels between the musical and lyrical themes of Middle Eastern and American Country music to connect personal experiences of conflict and migration from around the world. Both the Country and Arabic musical traditions share themes of migration\, love\, loneliness\, longing for home\, patriotism\, faith\, and relationship to place. Both tell stories through narrative ballads\, through pastoral meditations\, by praising folk heroes and through the idealization of a lost way of life. \nCountry for Syria’s musical mission is one of cultural diplomacy and mutual aid. While in today’s climate\, Middle Eastern and American cultures are often seen to as polar opposites\, Country for Syria seeks to break down those stereotypes through their music\, showing how much we really have in common. Money raised online and at benefit concerts goes to refugees and people affected by the conflict. They do this by providing money directly to refugees\, and by playing shows whose proceeds go to organizations whose mission is to help those affected by the conflict. They partner with organizations such as Small Projects Istanbul \, Safe Place International\, Zaatar NGO\, the Ad Dar Center \, and Clowns Without Borders . The band also makes regular trips to refugee camps and conflict areas to deliver supplies and donations while playing concerts in solidarity.

SUMMARY:Laila Lalami at Seattle Central Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Elliott Bay is delighted to welcome back a favorite writer\, Laila Lalami\, here tonight with a much anticipated new novel\, The Other Americans (Pantheon). A recipient of the American Book Award\, the Arab American Book Award\, the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award\, and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for her past books – Hope and Other Dangerous Pursuits\, Secret Son\, and The Moor’s Account – she delves into timely territory with this story of the mysterious death of a Moroccan immigrant in the present-day U.S. \n“Remarkable\, timely novel. Impeccably written story about a hit and run\, a family that must grapple with their grief as they try to make sense of why they’ve lost Driss\, the patriarch\, and the slowly unraveling mystery of who is responsible for the unthinkable. I love the depth of character here for Nora and Jeremy. The narrative is good from many points of view but theirs is the heart of this story and what a beautiful beating heart it is.”  —Roxane Gay. \n“This deftly constructed account of a crime and its consequences shows up\, in its quiet way\, the pressures under which ordinary Americans of Muslim background have labored since the events of 9/11.” —J.M. Coetzee. \nFree admission\, no tickets are needed. Co-presented with the SEATTLE PUBLIC LIBRARY at the Seattle Central Library – Level 4 – Room 1 – Washington Mutual Foundation Meeting Room

SUMMARY:Town Hall Seattle Presents: Dahr Jamail - The End of Ice
DESCRIPTION:Town Hall Seattle and Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility present\nDahr Jamail\nThe End of Ice\n\n\nAfter nearly a decade overseas\, acclaimed journalist Dahr Jamail returned to America to renew his passion for mountaineering—only to find that the slopes he once climbed have been irrevocably changed by climate disruption. He embarked on a worldwide journey to see for himself the consequences of climate change across the globe—from Alaska to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to the Amazon rainforest. Now his travels have taken him to our stage\, where he presents his findings in The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Disruption. \nJamail reveals reporting from the front lines of this crisis\, accompanied by climate scientists and people whose families have a centuries-long history of fishing\, farming\, and living in the areas he visited. Jamail shares his renewed passion for the planet’s wild places\, and invites us to witness a one-of-a-kind photographic account of the catastrophic reality of our situation and the incalculable necessity of relishing this vulnerable\, fragile planet while we still can. \nDahr Jamail\, a Truthout staff reporter\, is the author of Beyond the Green Zone: Dispatches from an Unembedded Journalist in Occupied Iraq. Jamail has reported from the Middle East over the last ten years\, and he has won the Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism. He is 4th generation Lebanese-American. \n\nPresented by Town Hall Seattle and Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility.

SUMMARY:Revelation of the Mysteries of Osiris\, Lord of Abydos - NELC Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Revelation of the Mysteries of Osiris\, Lord of Abydos: the secret rituals of reviving a murdered god \nwith UW Graduate Student\, Bryan Kraemer \n  \nThe ancient mysteries celebrated to revive the god Osiris during festivals held at his tomb in Abydos were a secret kept by the priests of Ancient Egypt for almost 2000 years. And yet a wish to participate in these mysteries in life or after death appears among Ancient Egyptian texts so frequently that it must be one of the most talked about secrets ever. Although we have been aware of how parts of the festivals at Abydos worked for almost a century\, the most secret mysteries have so far been unknown to scholars:  How did the Egyptians perform the rituals to revive the murdered god? \n\nUniversity of Washington – Smith Hall rm 211 \nA Lecture by the American Research Center in Egypt – Northwest Chapter\nCo-sponsored by the Dept. of Near Eastern Languages and Civilization\, University of Washington

SUMMARY:What is Democracy? - Northwest Film Forum
DESCRIPTION:Film: What is Democracy?\n\n** Co-presented with Town Hall Seattle! ** \nComing at a moment of profound political and social crisis\, What Is Democracy? reflects on a word we too often take for granted. Director Astra Taylor’s idiosyncratic\, philosophical journey spans millennia and continents: from ancient Athens’ groundbreaking experiment in self-government to capitalism’s roots in medieval Italy; from modern-day Greece grappling with financial collapse and a mounting refugee crisis to the United States reckoning with its racist past and the growing gap between rich and poor. \nFeaturing a diverse cast —including celebrated theorists\, trauma surgeons\, activists\, factory workers\, asylum seekers\, and former prime ministers—this urgent film connects the past and the present\, the emotional and the intellectual\, the personal and the political\, in order to provoke and inspire. If we want to live in democracy\, we must first ask what the word even means. From the director of Zizek! and Examined Life. \n\n

SUMMARY:Towards a Palestinian Third Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Towards a Palestinian Third Cinema\nNadia Yaqub\nUniversity of Washington\, Communications 120\nFree and open to the public \n\nIn the 1970s\, filmmakers Masao Adachi and Jean-Luc Godard each created a sophisticated essay film that used the Palestinian revolution to reflect questions of truth\, representation\, media circuits and the relationships that can and cannot be formed through them. This talk shifts attention away from these well-known works to focus on the films Palestinians themselves were making at this time\, exploring how they engaged differently with the ideas that animated Adachi and Godard\, as well as those articulated in the third cinema texts of Latin American filmmakers. \nNadia Yaqub (PhD University of California\, Berkeley\, 1999)\, is professor of Arabic language and culture in the department of Asian studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research addresses film\, gender\, and literature from the Arab world. She is the author of Pens Swords and the Springs of Art: The Oral Poetry Dueling of Weddings in the Galilee (Brill 2006) and Palestinian Cinema in the Days of Revolution (University of Texas Press 2018). She also coedited Bad Girls of the World (University of Texas Press 2017) with Rula Qua
