SUMMARY:Cooking Class: JERUSALEM STREET FOOD
DESCRIPTION:Join Nadia Tommalieh on a culinary journey to the bustling markets of the ancient city of Jerusalem\, where she’ll show you how to make iconic street foods that have been savored for generations. You’ll learn the rich cultural history behind these beloved recipes as you make freshly baked ka’ak al Quds (Jerusalem Sesame Bread) and qudsiyeh (creamy hummus with fava beans in a zesty citrus sauce). You’ll discover a twist on traditional favorites with falafel mahshi (falafel stuffed with caramelized onions and sumac) paired with tarator sauce; fattet hummus (seasoned chickpea stew with toasted bread and crunchy fried nuts). No Jerusalem street food experience would be complete without a side of traditional salatah Qudsiyeh\, a salad of seasonal vegetables and herbs dressed in a jalapeno and tahini dressing.

SUMMARY:Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage - Seattle
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we walk the entire length of Gaza (25 miles\, 41k) through Seattle as a pilgrimage and a communal act of solidarity with the people of Gaza.\nWe will be joining over 109 cities around the world led by Palestinian Christians during the season of Lent. In Seattle\, our pilgrimage is designed to be inclusive\, welcoming anyone interested in joining\, regardless of religious affiliation.\nWe will meet in Heritage Park (Corner of Market St. and Waverly Way) in Kirkland at 6:00am (free parking at 123 5th Ave)\, and journey together\, rain or shine\, around the north side of Lake Washington departing at 6:15am. Through this journey\, we aim to map the geography of Gaza onto Seattle\, making the distant reality of those living in Gaza more tangible and immediate to our local community.\nAs a spiritual journey and an act of protest\, participants are encouraged to reflect on the significance in their own way. There will be no collective religious exercises. We will be united by our journey and common desire for peace\, rather than specific religious practices. Together\, let’s take steps towards a future where peace and justice prevail for all.\nFULL DISCLOSURE: We have no resources to provide support for anyone who chooses to join us. We will simply provide our itinerary with an open invitation to anyone who wants to join for all or part of the walk. You are responsible for yourself and your needs.\nGaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage Objectives:\n1. Enduring and Sustained Ceasefire.\n2. End of occupation so a just-peace can begin.\nRoute:\nThe route will be a loop starting in Kirkland\, circling around Lake Washington\, crossing the 520 bridge\, and ending back where we started in Kirkland. Exact route will be shared closer to the event. It will likely take between 10-12 hours depending on your walking speed and how many breaks you take. There will be no support vehicles. Each person should have their own plan in case they need to stop early.\nDo I have to walk the full distance?\nNo\, you are welcome to walk with us for as long or short as you’d like.\nWhat to bring for the day?\n-Water (we will map out locations to refill bottles)\n-Good shoes\n-Appropriate clothes for the weather\n-Food/Snacks (we will map out locations for purchasing food or restaurant options)\n-Phone (we will have a group communication thread)\n-Anything else you will need for an all day walk\nCan I bring signs and flags?\nYes. SUMMARY:Flavors of Somalia: Cooking Class
DESCRIPTION:Located in the horn with the longest coastline in mainland Africa\, Somalia was a powerhouse in the spice trade for centuries and a common stopping point for sailing vessels from all over the world. This allowed indigenous Somali cuisine to expand and incorporate the influence of Indian\, East African\, Italian\, and Middle Eastern flavors\, leading to a delicious and unique culinary tradition. Join local chef Ifrah Ahmed in class\, where she will teach you about the cuisine of Somalia and how to make some of her favorite classic dishes. On the menu: suqaar digaag (spiced chicken and pepper saute); bariis (Somali rice); sambuus (fried triangular dumplings filled with beef and vegetables); and basbaas (Somali-style hot sauce). \nPlease note: some classes can be adjusted for students with dietary restrictions\, but many cannot. If you’re vegetarian\, pescatarian\, or gluten-free\, you can use the drop-down menu on our events page to view the best classes to fit your needs. If a class you’re interested in doesn’t appear in that filtered view\, please email us before registering and we’ll see if the class’s menu can be modified.

SUMMARY:Rachel Corrie 21 years: They Are Us and We Are Them
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 16th\, is the 21st anniversary of Rachel Corrie’s stand in Gaza to prevent the demolition of a Palestinian home. Please join us at this community gathering to learn about and remember Rachel\, to carry on the critical work that she inspired\, and to strengthen our individual and organizational connections for social justice. \nWe’ll view a short film about Rachel\, followed by Q&A with her parents; have social time for getting to know one another and each other’s work; engage in simple actions that address the current situation in Gaza; and share poetry that centers Palestine. Is there a poet in you? Would your organization like to be represented at this event? Contact us at info@rachelcorriefoundation.org. \nThis year\, March 16th falls during Ramadan. Light snacks will be provided that we hope our fasting guests will take with them to enjoy after sundown.
