SUMMARY:Circle Mirror Transformation
DESCRIPTION:Circle Mirror Transformation is a case study of strangers willing to take a chance and open themselves to the revelations\, indignities\, hilarity\, and heartbreak of an amateur acting class in a community center classroom. In doing so\, they transform the space into the anti-Zoom room; it becomes a quietly poignant reminder of the power of being present with one another\, a reflection of the stories we share through the silliness and the silences\, an open invitation to partake in the transformative and sublime power of play. \nCircle Mirror Transformation premiered at Playwrights Horizons in October 2009. The play received Obie Awards for Best New American Play\, Performance\, Ensemble\, and Directing; and was nominated for the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and Outstanding Director of a Play. \n  \n*This play has an Arab character and Arab actors \n

SUMMARY:Flavors of Somalia: Cooking Class
DESCRIPTION:Located in the horn with the longest coastline in mainland Africa\, Somalia was a powerhouse in the spice trade for centuries and a common stopping point for sailing vessels from all over the world. This allowed indigenous Somali cuisine to expand and incorporate the influence of Indian\, East African\, Italian\, and Middle Eastern flavors\, leading to a delicious and unique culinary tradition. Join local chef Ifrah Ahmed in class\, where she will teach you about the cuisine of Somalia and how to make some of her favorite classic dishes. On the menu: suqaar digaag (spiced chicken and pepper saute); bariis(Somali rice); sambuus (fried triangular dumplings filled with beef and vegetables); and basbaas (Somali-style hot sauce). \nPlease note: some classes can be adjusted for students with dietary restrictions\, but many cannot. If you’re vegetarian\, pescatarian\, or gluten-free\, you can use the drop-down menu on our events page to view the best classes to fit your needs. If a class you’re interested in doesn’t appear in that filtered view\, please email us before registering and we’ll see if the class’s menu can be modified.

SUMMARY:No Other Land (in person) - NWFF
DESCRIPTION:Nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 2025 Academy Awards!  \nBasel Adra\, a young Palestinian activist from Masafer Yatta\, has been fighting his community’s mass expulsion by the Israeli occupation since childhood. Basel documents the gradual erasure of Masafer Yatta\, as soldiers destroy the homes of families – the largest single act of forced transfer ever carried out in the occupied West Bank. He crosses paths with Yuval\, an Israeli journalist who joins his struggle\, and for over half a decade they fight against the expulsion while growing closer. Their complex bond is haunted by the extreme inequality between them: Basel\, living under a brutal military occupation\, and Yuval\, unrestricted and free. This film\, by a Palestinian-Israeli collective of four young activists\, was co-created during the darkest\, most terrifying times in the region\, as an act of creative resistance to Apartheid and a search for a path towards equality and justice. \nSynopsis courtesy of mTuckman Media\n \nThu Feb 20: 7.30pm PDT\nFri Feb 21: 7.00pm PDT\nSat Feb 22: 4.00pm PDT\, 7.00pm PDT\nFri Feb 28: 7.00pm PDT\nSat Mar 01: 4.00pm PDT\, 7.00pm PDT\nSun Mar 02: 4.00pm PDT

SUMMARY:Hend Yahya: Essential Knife Skills
DESCRIPTION:Build confidence in the kitchen by mastering knife skills! Practice knife-handling hands-on and learn how to cut safely and efficiently in this skill-building workshop. Build a foundation of knife efficiency\, including proper grip\, everyday use and professional techniques. You can bring your favorite chef’s knife or use one of ours. A light snack will be served in class. \nAbout the instructor: After cooking in Michelin Star restaurants and high volume catering events\, I made a “temporary” switch to teaching cooking classes. However\, the satisfaction and unique experience I received from teaching convinced me that this was my new culinary path. I am a graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu\, where I mainly focused on French and Western technique\, but I have deep roots in Middle-Eastern cuisine and an enthusiastic\, developed passion for Japanese cuisine. In my travels I seek out to learn something new\, and for me\, the more specific and obscure\, the better. My interests and abilities continue to range out further\, as long as I can do it\, I will teach it.

\nSynopsis courtesy of mTuckman Media \nSat Mar 01: 4.00pm PDT\, 7.00pm PDT\nSun Mar 02: 4.00pm PDT
