SUMMARY:Streaming: There is Field + panel discussion
DESCRIPTION:Amnesty International Puget Sound AIPS and Local Group AI-270 will be presentingThere Is A Field this Sunday\, January 22\, 2023 from 6-8pm PT. The film will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Nada Elia\, with Alicia Koustoulieris\, Jesse Hagopian\, and Jen Marlowe. \nAbout the film:\nIn October 2000\, a police officer shot and killed unarmed 17-year old Asel Asleh. His story is tragically familiar for Americans\, but Asel was not killed in Ferguson\, New York City\, Atlanta\, or Minneapolis. Asel was a Palestinian teenager who was murdered by Israeli police as he participated in a demonstration\, calling for an end to the Israeli occupation and settler-colonization. \nThere Is A Field begins as a play about Asel’s life and his death\, told from the perspective of his older sister\, Nardin. Through Nardin’s struggle to cope with the murder of her brother\, the play offers a uniquely personal lens for learning about intersecting systems of oppression\, the root causes of state-sanctioned violence and structural racism. Learn more about the film. \nAbout The Panelists:\n\nNada Elia PhD\, (moderator) is a diaspora Palestinian scholar and activist who teaches in the American Cultural Studies program at Western Washington University WWU\, and is the author of Greater Than the Sum of Our Parts: Feminism\, Inter/Nationalism\, and Palestine.\nAlicia Koutsoulieris\, Amnesty International\, USA country specialist for the Israel Occupied Territories – Palestinian Authority – IOPT-PA.\nJesse Hagopian is an educator\, author\, and part of the 2011 African Heritage Eyewitness Palestine delegation. Jesse’s African ancestors survived the middle passage and enslavement on plantations in Mississippi and Louisiana.\nJen Marlowe is the founder of Donkeysaddle Projects and director and producer of the documentary film There Is A Field.\n\nThe free event will take place on Sunday at 3pm ET/6pm PT. Follow this link to register. \n  \nAmnesty International Puget Sound AIPS and Local Group AI-270 will be presentingThere Is A Field this Sunday\, January 22\, 2023 from 6-8pm PT. SUMMARY:Unlearn to Relearn: Shifting Attitudes for Arabs with Disabilities
DESCRIPTION:Nadwa (Public Conversation)\n  November 16\, 2021\n\n\nVirtual via Zoom \n\n\n\nDisability? Disabled? Special Needs? What language and framework do/should we use in the Arab Community? Join us for a discussion on disability in the Arab/American community! \nHistorically and traditionally\, people with disabilities across the globe have been systematically excluded and marginalized from all aspects of society. Although perspectives and attitudes about disability have changed in recent decades\, people with disabilities of color continue to face systemic and cultural barriers that deprive this community of accessing quality education and resources that will enable them to become valued members of society. In particular\, people with disabilities among Arab communities\, by large\, continue to face persistent and blatant oppression and barriers from living quality and humane lives. This webinar is the first of its kind. We will explicitly address long-term disability issues that have impacted Arab communities in the United States and the Middle East. The webinar aims to ignite new ways of thinking about disability and how all of us—both disabled and non-disabled alike—can begin to create a better society that promotes the basic principles of independence\, respect and dignity for Arabs with physical\, intellectual\, and mental health disabilities. \nFacilitators: \n\nAdnan Alaboudi\, International Disability Self Advocate\, Jordan\nMarina Salman\, Access Living Chicago\nRanda Abdelrahim\, PhD Candidate Disability Studies\, UIC\n\nReal-time live captioning will be provided. For questions\, additional information\, and/or accessibility contact us at arabamcc@uic.edu \nEvent is co-organized by the Arab American Cultural Center and the Disability Cultural Center \nSpeaker bios: \nAdnan Alaboudi is a person with disabilities (dual bottom amputation above and under the knee). Adnan is the Executive Director of the Landmines Survivors Network from 1999-2008 and a member of the Committee for Drafting of the International Convention on Human Rights with Disability in the United Nations. He is an activist and coach in the field of persons with disabilities and a professional sport in power games\, table tennis\, swimming and water skiing\, and participating in global\, Olympic\, and Arab sports. Adnan is the coordinator of awareness and promotion programs in the Supreme Council for People with Disabilities in Jordan 2009 – 2017. \nMarina Salman serves as the SOAR case manager for the Colbert Transition Program at Access Living Chicago where she helps individuals living in long-term care facilities reintegrate back into their communities after their recovery. She is also involved in numerous advocacy efforts that focus on the intersectionality of race and disability\, which includes healthcare and criminal justice reform. Marina completed her Master’s in Counseling Psychology with a focus in Sport and Health Psychology from Adler University in Chicago. She is an Arab American woman with multiple disabilities who looks to empower Arabs with disabilities to live meaningful lives through the power of education and experience. \nRanda Abdelrahim is a visiting research specialist at the department of disability and human development\, University of Illinois Chicago and a PhD candidate of disability studies. As an Arab American immigrant\, Randa is interested in examining contextual factors of disability across immigrants and minority groups. Her research focuses on how multiple personal and social factors such as gender\, culture\, race\, and income contribute to disparities in accessing health care and disability services for people with disabilities and their caregivers. Her advocacy work includes supporting people with disabilities with a focus on those who identify as Arab. She is currently a member of the Disability and Immigration Taskforce of Illinois.

SUMMARY:Virtual Delegations to Om Sleiman Farm: Eyewitness Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual tour of Om Sleiman Farm\, where farming is a powerful form of resistance! As Yara states in a Vice article (2018)\, “we’re so dependent on the occupier—for the electricity\, water\, housing\, food\, movement\, with the air almost. If we as Palestinians cannot produce our own food\, build our own shelter\, have our own energy—how can we get rid of this occupation?” \nYour Guide\, Yara! \nYara Dowani\, from Jerusalem\, is the co-founder and a farmer at Om Sleiman Farm-Bi’lin. Her journey started after joining a permaculture course in Palestine for two weeks. Afterwards\, she took a trip to Spain for a year to volunteer and learn from different farms and projects and then came back to Palestine to join a research group to study wild perennial plants. In 2018\, Yara became part of the Om Sleiman team and has been a part of it ever since. She is now on a journey to learn new topics\, such as natural building and syntropic farming\, to be able to implement new innovative projects at the farm. \n(All tour times are listed in Eastern Time – USA) \n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER\n\nTuesday July 6 2:00pm – 3:3opm ET\nSaturday\, July 10\, 12pm – 1:30pm ET\nWednesday\, July 14\, 12pm -1:30pm ET\nSunday\, July 18\, 2pm – 3:30pm ET
