DESCRIPTION:Singing Seattle: A Reading and Celebration \nThree authors read poetry and creative nonfiction that speaks to our moment\, followed by a Q&A and book signing. Samina Najmi reads from her debut memoir-in-essays Sing Me A Circle: Love\, Loss\, and a Home in Time\, Lena Khalaf Tuffaha from her award-winning poetry collection Something About Living\, and Kalehua Kim from her debut poetry collection Mele. The readings will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. \nFree admission to this event is made possible with support from 4Culture. \n\n\n\n\n\nSamina Najmi\nSamina Najmi is a professor of English at California State University\, Fresno. Her memoir-in-essays\, Sing Me a Circle: Love\, Loss\, and a Home in Time\, won the Aurora Polaris Award in Creative Nonfiction and was published Oct 1 by Trio House Press. It has received a starred review from Publishers Weekly and is featured among Poets & Writers’ five creative nonfiction debuts of the year. Samina is enrolled part-time in Fresno State’s MFA program in creative nonfiction\, and this is keeping her humble. Daughter of multiple migrations\, Samina has lived in Fresno since 2006 and watched with wonder her children\, her students\, and her citrus grow. \n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nLena Khalaf Tuffaha\nLena Khalaf Tuffaha is a poet\, essayist and translator. Her most recent book\, Something About Living (UAkron\, 2024)\, was listed as a 2025 notable book by the American Library Association\, and was winner of the 2024 National Book Award\, the 2025 Washington State Book Award\, and the 2025 Arab American Book Award. Something About Living will be published by the 87Press in the UK and Ireland\, where it is a finalist for the PEN Heaney Prize. She is also the author of Kaan and Her Sisters (Trio House\, 2023)\, finalist for the Firecracker Prize\, and Water & Salt (Red Hen\, 2017)\, winner of the 2018 Washington State Book Award. Tuffaha’s writing has been published in journals including Los Angeles Review of Books\, Michigan Quarterly Review\, the Nation\, Poets.org\, and Prairie Schooner and in anthologies including The Long Devotion and We Call to the Eye and the Night. She was the translator and curator of the 2022 series “Poems from Palestine” at the Baffler magazine. Born of Hawaiian\, Chinese\, Filipino and Portuguese descent\, her multicultural background informs much of her work. A 2023 winner of the James Welch Prize for Indigenous Poets\, her poems have appeared in Poetry Northwest\, Denver Quarterly\, Calyx\, and ‘Ōiwi\, A Native Hawaiian Journal. As a recipient of the 2024 Trio House Press Editor’s Choice Prize\, her first collection of poems\, Mele\, was released byTrio House in 2025.

DESCRIPTION:Layli Long Soldier\,author of WHEREAS\, visits Seattle Public Library Central to discuss We\, her extraordinary work of poetry\, essay\, and art\, longlisted for the 2026 National Book Award. She is joined by National Book Award winning poet Lena Khalaf Tuffaha.\n\n\nRegister here! \nRegistration is required. This event is held in the Microsoft Auditorium on Level 1 of SPL Central Branch. \nIn We\, Layli Long Soldier examines what it means to be in community\, to be in relation with family\, nation\, history\, and language. We is the first-person plural\, the pronoun of inclusion in English. It is also Wé\, the Lakota word meaning “blood”—what is shared and what is shed. \nIn this ingenious and insightful arrangement of poems\, lyric essays\, and her own visual artworks presented in full color\, Long Soldier creates unique spaces of collaboration\, mentorship\, and shared knowledge. The 184 X’s signed to a broken treaty\, the fringes of a winged dress braided in honor of children lost to Indian boarding schools\, and intricate Lakota star quilts become shapes and patterns that convey collective kinship\, memory\, and grievance. “From this day forward\,” Long Soldier writes\, “I declare a war of language.” \nWe is a visionary new collection by a writer and artist whose unfolding works are among the most groundbreaking of our time. \nLayli Long Soldier is a poet\, artist\, and citizen of the Oglala Lakota Nation. She is the author of WHEREAS\, a finalist for the 2017 National Book Award and winner of the 2018 PEN/Jean Stein Book Award and the 2018 National Book Critics Circle Award. Long Soldier has also received a 2016 Whiting Award\, a 2021 Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature\, the 2021 Michael Murphy Memorial Poetry Prize in the UK\, and the 2025 C.D. Wright Award for Poetry from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. In 2024\, she received an Emmy Award for her poetry in the documentary film Lakota Nation vs. United States. She teaches in the MFA Creative Writing Program at the Institute of American Indian Arts and resides in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. \nLena Khalaf Tuffaha is the author of three award-winning books of poetry\, Water & Salt (Red Hen\, 2017)\, Kaan and Her Sisters (Trio House\, 2023)\, and Something About Living (University of Akron\, 2024). Something About Living won the 2024 National Book Award\, an Arab American Book Award\, a Washington State Book Award\, and an American Library Association’s Notable Book. Tuffaha is also an essayist and translator. Her work has been published in journals including Michigan Quarterly Review\, Mizna\, the Nation\, Prairie Schooner\, and Poets.org. In 2022\, she was the curator of the poetry translation series Poetry from Palestine at the Baffler magazine. She won the John Fredrick Nims Memorial Prize for Translation from the Poetry Foundation for her translations of the late Zakaria Mohammed’s poems in that series.
