SUMMARY:Workshops 4 Gaza: Cryptids and Creatures: Mythology in Poetry
DESCRIPTION:What role do cryptids and creatures like the Minotaur\, the Mapinguari\, or the Little Mermaid play in a poem? What do they allow writers to communicate about the myriad costs of being in this world characterized by colonial violence and slavery? \nThis workshop engages works by poets like Traci Brimhall\, Natalie Diaz\, and Summer Farah\, whose mythical creatures unsettle understandings of loneliness\, intimacy\, sacrifice\, and our relationships between past and present. \nThis will be an interactive space\, where participants will write and share poems as cryptozoologists\, architects\, and memory workers. This workshop benefits the Sameer Project’s North Gaza campaign. \nMaya Salameh is the author of HOW TO MAKE AN ALGORITHM IN THE MICROWAVE (University of Arkansas Press\, 2022)\, winner of the Etel Adnan Poetry Prize\, and the chapbook rooh (Paper Nautilus Press\, 2020). Her work has appeared in The Offing\, Poetry\, Gulf Coast\, The Rumpus\, AGNI\, Mizna\, and the LA Times\, among others. She can be found at @mayaslmh or mayasalameh.com.

SUMMARY:Seattle Arts & Lectures Youth Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebratory poetry reading featuring SAL’s talented Youth Poetry Fellows. This reading marks the end of the program\, and you are invited to come celebrate their genius with us!\n\n\nRegistration is not required\, but helps us anticipate audience size. If you’d like to RSVP\, please do so here! \nAbout SAL’s Youth Poetry Fellowship (YPF): \nThe Youth Poetry Fellowship serves a cohort of young writers committed to poetry\, performance\, civic and community engagement\, education\, and equity across the Puget Sound region. Over the course of the school year\, fellows meet regularly for workshops with the Youth Poetry Fellowship mentors. Fellows also have numerous public opportunities to share their voices\, leadership\, and love of Seattle throughout the course of the year. One of the fellows serves as the Youth Poet Laureate and writes a poetry collection published by Poetry NW Editions. \nAhsenti Alfedil (she/her) is a first-generation American of Ethio-Sudanese descent and a student at the Bush School. A multidisciplinary Piscean\, she moves fluidly between poetry\, acrylic/oil painting\, and movement—always led by curiosity and feeling. When not overwhelmed by her academic workload\, she finds joy in braiding hair\, spending hours adorning herself and loved ones in henna\, skating to her favorite playlists\, and research as a leisure activity. As a writer\, Ahsenti turns most often to poetry. Her work shows resistance to categorization because she follows her intrigue; the fleeting moments that spark inspiration to create. Through her writing\, she hopes to make space for those navigating layered identities\, vulnerability\, and for stories that make people feel seen in their most intricate and unspoken parts. \nNadia Najam is a senior at Liberty High School in Renton\, Washington. She finds joy in reading any good book she can get her hands on and spending time in nature. Through YPF\, Nadia hopes to grow more confident in sharing her writing with the world and to challenge herself to explore new themes and styles in her poetry. \nand more. \n

SUMMARY:Layli Long Soldier w/ Lena Khalaf Tuffaha at Seattle Public Library
DESCRIPTION:Layli Long Soldier\,author of WHEREAS\, visits Seattle Public Library Central to discuss We\, her extraordinary work of poetry\, essay\, and art\, longlisted for the 2026 National Book Award. She is joined by National Book Award winning poet Lena Khalaf Tuffaha.\n\n\nRegister here! \nRegistration is required. This event is held in the Microsoft Auditorium on Level 1 of SPL Central Branch. \nIn We\, Layli Long Soldier examines what it means to be in community\, to be in relation with family\, nation\, history\, and language. We is the first-person plural\, the pronoun of inclusion in English. It is also Wé\, the Lakota word meaning “blood”—what is shared and what is shed. \nIn this ingenious and insightful arrangement of poems\, lyric essays\, and her own visual artworks presented in full color\, Long Soldier creates unique spaces of collaboration\, mentorship\, and shared knowledge. The 184 X’s signed to a broken treaty\, the fringes of a winged dress braided in honor of children lost to Indian boarding schools\, and intricate Lakota star quilts become shapes and patterns that convey collective kinship\, memory\, and grievance. “From this day forward\,” Long Soldier writes\, “I declare a war of language.” \nWe is a visionary new collection by a writer and artist whose unfolding works are among the most groundbreaking of our time. \nLayli Long Soldier is a poet\, artist\, and citizen of the Oglala Lakota Nation. She is the author of WHEREAS\, a finalist for the 2017 National Book Award and winner of the 2018 PEN/Jean Stein Book Award and the 2018 National Book Critics Circle Award. Long Soldier has also received a 2016 Whiting Award\, a 2021 Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature\, the 2021 Michael Murphy Memorial Poetry Prize in the UK\, and the 2025 C.D. Wright Award for Poetry from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts. In 2024\, she received an Emmy Award for her poetry in the documentary film Lakota Nation vs. United States. She teaches in the MFA Creative Writing Program at the Institute of American Indian Arts and resides in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. \nLena Khalaf Tuffaha is the author of three award-winning books of poetry\, Water & Salt (Red Hen\, 2017)\, Kaan and Her Sisters (Trio House\, 2023)\, and Something About Living (University of Akron\, 2024). Something About Living won the 2024 National Book Award\, an Arab American Book Award\, a Washington State Book Award\, and an American Library Association’s Notable Book. Tuffaha is also an essayist and translator. Her work has been published in journals including Michigan Quarterly Review\, Mizna\, the Nation\, Prairie Schooner\, and Poets.org. In 2022\, she was the curator of the poetry translation series Poetry from Palestine at the Baffler magazine. She won the John Fredrick Nims Memorial Prize for Translation from the Poetry Foundation for her translations of the late Zakaria Mohammed’s poems in that series. She is currently translating a manuscript of his selected works. \n\nTuesday Oct 13th\, 2026\n\n\n\n7:00 PM\n\n\n–\n\n\n8:30 PM\n\n\n SPL Central Branch
